Does the Iron Curtain Still Exist? the Convergence in Electoral Volatility between Eastern and Western Europe

    No full text
The literature on party system change and electoral volatility in post-communist Europe tends to make a clear-cut distinction between Central and Eastern European (CEE) party systems and Western European (WE) ones. The former are unstable and unpredictable and electoral volatility is driven by the continuous emergence of new political parties. Conversely, electoral stability is the rule in the latter, and volatility is associated with electoral shifts among established parties. This conventional wisdom suffers from three potential sources of bias: case selection, time coverage and method. By correcting these biases, this article investigates whether the traditional division between CEE and WE party systems has been levelled as regards volatility. To do so, it presents evidence based on an original data set of electoral volatility and its internal components covering 31 WE and CEE party systems since 1990. It finds that a process of asymmetric convergence in the levels of electoral volatility is taking place between the two regions, with Western Europe approaching Central and Eastern Europe with increasing electoral instability

Navigating Complexity: Continuity and Change in European Governance, 2023/2024

This article was crafted shortly after a critical turning point, that is the institutional and political renewal process that began on 6–9 June 2024. During this period, nearly 400 million European citizens were entitled to elect the 720 Members of the 10th European Parliament (EP) Legislature. In the following weeks, crucial decisions were made regarding the EU’s top leadership positions. We argue that the 2024 renewal process was unusual, as it involved more political continuity than change, with the explicit aim of securing the survival of the European project amidst a proliferation of challenges. In this sense, it can be viewed as an unusual phase of (conservative) transition that managed to prevent radical alterations in the evolution of the EU’s trajectory by explicitly investing in continuity in leaders and dossiers. We identify five main continuities in both the degree and type of response from EU citizens to the challenge of institutional renewal (e.g., turnout and electoral results) and the outcomes (e.g., group formation, leadership positions and agenda-setting)

Un polo solo. Le elezioni politiche del 2022

    No full text

Party digitalization and members’ empowerment: A comparison of four Italian parties

The digitalization of political parties has often been approached from the perspective of political parties. Previous studies discuss the potential impact of technology on empowerment, but the users’ attitudes to this are largely unknown. To address this gap in the literature, our article analyses how party members view the empowerment potential of digital tools in their party. We use data from semi-structured interviews conducted in November and December 2023 with members of four Italian political parties: Brothers of Italy, Democratic Party, Five Star Movement, and Forza Italia. Employing an inductive approach, the coding process was data-driven, and identified four forms of empowerment. The analysis revealed significant, and in some cases counterintuitive, similarities and differences between the parties examined

Populism and Immigration: (Re)Inventing Identities Through Language

    No full text
Populism is one of the hottest topics of the moment and immigration is a fundamental lens for understanding its success, although not the only one. Starting from this assumption, this chapter aims to specify how language can be used as a strategic resource to empower populist platforms. The analysis contributes to the existing analysis by clarifying that language is intrinsically evaluative: the choice of the use of words and the linguistic strategies implemented by any political actor cannot be seen as neutral. Hence, we argue that (radical right) populists do not make a pathological use of language per se. The populist linguistic strategies belong to a physiological dimension, in the sense that PRRPs masterly exploit the potentialities inherent in language. In brief, we connect to Mudde’s convincing argumentation concerning the need to understand contemporary populist radical right not as a normal pathology but as a pathological normalcy (2010) and consider that populist radical right parties’ relation to language is better perceived as a pathological physiology, in the sense that the content might be at odds with the politically correct, but even the politically correct is not neutral
