The State of Statelessness: Rethinking Belonging in Stateless Narratives from Lebanon and Kuwait
A stateless individual, as described by the United Nations, is a person who is not considered as a national by any state under the operation of its law. While statelessness is a relatively well-represented issue in humanitarian, political, and anthropological studies, the cultural and literary production of stateless individuals around the world is overlooked and understudied. This thesis examines the aesthetic and narrative structures of two stateless narratives, Qayd El Dars by Lebanese author Lana Abdulrahman and Kaliska by Bidun-Canadian author Nasser Al Dhafiri. It utilizes the critical concepts of legality and spatiality to look at how places in Kaliksa and Qayd El Dars are mapped, and the effects that they have on their inhabitants. Under spatiality, it argues that stateless literature can uncover places of belonging that are often ignored or discredited in the public narrative of the nation-state. The concepts of roots and routes, which are often used in analysis of refugee, exile, and diaspora literature, are revisited from the lens of statelessness. Through a close reading of both content and form, this thesis argues that the arbitrary and self-serving methods employed by the states to exclude the stateless from official national belonging are built into the fabric of the narrative in stateless literature, with the Novel form serving as an embodiment of the totality of the stateless experience and its humanity and interconnectedness
Biocompatible humidity sensor using paper cellulose fiber/GO matrix for human health and environment monitoring
Environmentally friendly humidity sensors with high sensing performance are considered crucial components for various wearable electronic devices. We developed a rapid-response and durable Paper Cellulose Fiber/Graphene Oxide Matrix (PCFGOM) humidity sensor using an all-carbon functional material. The fabricated sensor demonstrated a high sensitivity to humidity through an electrical impedance measurement, with an increase in response to humidity ranging from 10% to 90% at 1 kHz and 10 kHz, respectively, along with a response time of 1.2 s and a recovery time of 0.8 s. The stability of the sensor was also examined, with consistent performance over a period of 24 h. This novel sensor was employed in several applications, including non-contact proximity sensing, environmental humidity detection, and human respiration detection, to showcase its potential. Moreover, this work represents a significant milestone in developing inexpensive and eco-friendly humidity sensors, given the abundance of paper and graphene in nature and their biocompatibility.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository 'You share, we take care!' - Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Computer Engineerin
Metabolic and Appetite Hormone Responses of Hyperinsulinemic Normoglycemic Males to Meals with Varied Macronutrient Compositions
<i>Aims:</i> The aim of this study was to investigate the appetite hormones and metabolic responses of hyperinsulinemic subjects to high-protein (HP) meals as compared to high-carbohydrate (HC) and high-fat (HF) meals. <i>Design:</i> Fifteen hyperinsulinemic normoglycemic men received, on 3 separate occasions, HP, HC, or HF meals in a randomized crossover design. Blood samples were collected before and after the ingestion of each meal. Postprandially, acylated ghrelin, PYY3–36, insulin, glucose, and triglycerides were measured. <i>Results:</i> While the HC meal induced an acutely greater postprandial ghrelin decrease below baseline, the HP meal maintained this decline significantly more than the HF meal at 240 min. Postprandial PYY3–36 responses did not significantly vary with time and meal composition. Postprandial insulin and glucose peaks were significantly lower following the HP and HF meals in comparison to the HC meal, whereas triglyceride responses were significantly higher following the HF meal. Significant correlations, negative between acylated ghrelin and insulin and positive between PYY3–36 and insulin, were observed. <i>Conclusions:</i> In hyperinsulinemic normoglycemic men, HP meals ensure a longer-lasting suppression of circulating ghrelin levels and result in more favorable metabolic responses, characterized by a lower surge of postprandial insulin and glucose and a reduced postprandial triglyceride response, as compared to both HC and HF meals.</jats:p
COVID-19 associated coagulopathy: A bibliometric investigation
Infection with SARS-CoV-2 initiates an immune-hemostatic response. While both systems are intimately connected and necessary for an efficient immune response to contain the infection, excessive coagulation activation might exceed the valuable benefits by causing thrombotic consequences and excessive inflammation. This biological response is new to clinicians and researchers, and accordingly, tremendous studies have been conducted on coagulopathy and its relationship to COVID-19 disease during this pandemic. Therefore, it takes a research insight from a bibliometric perspective to determine research hotspots and trends of COVID-19 associated coagulopathy (C19-CA). The analysis relies on the Scopus database for bibliographic content and Visualization of Similarities viewer software to map bibliometric data of C19-CA. Our study finds the most eminent authors, journals, institutions, funding organizations, and countries that publish in the C19-CA. Additionally; this research employs bibliometric analysis of co-authorship, co-citations, bibliographic coupling, and co-occurrence of keywords. A total of 2242 studies were retrieved, and the number of annual publications of C19-CA showed remarkable growth. The top-publishing authors on C19-CA are Smadja, D.M., Diehl, J.L., and Gendron, N (France). The total number of articles published in English in these three years was 1241, with the original article accounting for 99.8% and conference papers accounting for 0.2%. Huazhong University of Science and Technology (China) is the top-productive institution, with the US being the top-publishing country. Journal of Thrombosis and Thrombolysis received the highest number of original articles. The research results were mainly published in the fields of Medicine, Biochemistry, Genetics, and Molecular Biology, Immunology and Microbiology. Yuanyuan Li, who is (China), is the top-collaborating author. China and its authors have the highest number of citations. Keywords' co-occurrence analyses of the authors and all keywords revealed the following themes in C19-CA; abnormal coagulation parameters, pulmonary coagulopathy, venous and arterial thrombotic disorders, distinct features of coagulopathy, inflammation, and thrombosis in COVID-19, and anticoagulants and thrombolytic therapies. By combining bibliometric analysis with VOSviewer software, we identified C19-CA's leaders, collaborating institutions, and research hotspots, as well as give references for future research paths
Il devient mythe, demeure vivant et acquiert une richesse littéraire grâce à son actualisation qui répond aux multiples besoins de l époqueSeveral heroines knew how to change the fate of humanity, among them the Kahena. This queen reminds people of the perpetual fight of woman. Her fight which fascinated many since her distant time is still captivating. She was the last queen who managed to unite the Berber people, thus representing the resistance against the new conqueror of Africa, the Arab. Historians made of her a heroic figure and writers considered her as a mythical figure. This research work, through its three parts, attempts to emphasize the literary importance of this social and political dimension of the Kahena. In the first part, it recounts all the conquests that preceded the Arab invasion in Africa, the episode which conjures up its main character. In its second part, it goes from historical to literary style in order to highlight the different status of the Kahena in many novelistic texts. The image of the queen was alternately in accordance with tradition and at odds with it. Each author adapts his writing to his characters as well as to his readers. As far as the third part is concerned, it is dedicated to a comparative study with two other mythical and historical figures, Joan of Arc and Cleopatra as well as the evolution of their myth in literature. This study enables us to refer to the various pictures of the Kahena. In spite of cultural difference, the character keeps his heroic, imposing and symbolic status, modelled or embellished according to novelistic imaginary or the requirement of the age. He becomes a myth, remains alive and acquires literary treasures thanks to his updating, which meets many contemporary needsBESANCON-BU Lettres (250562101) / SudocSudocFranceF
Chromatic Semiotics in Samihah Khreis’s Novel Fustuq ‘Abeed
This study aims to analyze the semiology of color in narrative discourse as verbal-visual signs that convey psychological, cultural, and aesthetic meanings beyond their descriptive function. The study focuses on the role of color in constructing meaning and shaping the fictional world. It hypothesizes that color in the novelistic text is not merely decorative or ornamental, but rather constitutes a complex sign system, which contributes to meaning-making. This deepens the character's psychological structure and reveals the symbolic and ideological dimensions of the narrated world.
The research methods involve a critical analysis of Fustuq Abeed, a novel published in 2016 by the Jordanian author Samihah Khreis. The theoretical framework of the study integrates narrative semiotics, psychology, and cultural anthropology. The results show that colors such as black, white, blue, and yellow are used to represent conflicts of identity, freedom, and colonialism. Furthermore, color operates as a parallel semiotic system within the text, interacting with other narrative systems to produce a rich, multilayered discourse that enhances the novel’s symbolic dept
Fetal intrapericardial teratoma: natural history and management including successful in utero surgery
BackgroundIntrapericardial teratoma is a rare, lethal tumor often detected in fetal life. Tumor mass and pericardial effusion cause cardiac tamponade that, if relieved, could be life-saving. Optimal timing of intervention and methods for effective fetal treatment are unknown.ObjectiveWe describe our single-center experience with fetal intrapericardial teratoma including the first report of successful in utero surgical resection with survival to term.Study DesignWe reviewed our database for suspected fetal intrapericardial teratoma. On fetal ultrasound and echocardiography tumor size was estimated by calculation of an ellipse and analyzed in relation to Doppler-derived fetal cardiac output, venous flow patterns, hydrops, and outcome.ResultsEight fetuses with suspected intrapericardial teratoma were seen from 2009 through 2015. Gestational age at initial presentation ranged from 21-34 (median 26) weeks. Two cases mimicked the appearance of intrapericardial teratoma, but had no serial change in cardiac output over time and were ultimately determined to be other types of tumor. In 6 cases of true intrapericardial teratoma, tumor growth was extremely rapid and associated with progressive decline in cardiac output (to <400 mL/kg/min) manifesting in hydrops and death if left untreated. One case was treated successfully at 31 weeks through ex utero intrapartum delivery with tumor resection while on placental support. Another case underwent open fetal surgery and resection at 24 weeks, with resumption of gestation until delivery at 37 weeks with excellent outcome.ConclusionFetal intrapericardial teratoma can be successfully managed utilizing serial surveillance and by treatment in a timely manner prior to the predictable onset of hydrops, determined through increasing tumor size and a declining cardiac output. Surgical resection in utero is possible, with good results

Infant and young child feeding practices in Lebanon: a cross-sectional national study
Objective: To assess infant and young child feeding (IYCF) practices in Lebanon and investigate their associations with socio-demographic and lifestyle factors. Design: A cross-sectional national survey was conducted in 2012-2013. In addition to a socio-demographic and lifestyle questionnaire, a 24-h dietary recall for the children was collected, with mothers as proxies. IYCF practices were assessed based on the 2021 indicators of the WHO. Setting: Lebanon. Participants: Children aged 0-23 months and their mothers (n 469). Results: While the majority of infants were ever breastfed (87·6 %), the prevalence of exclusive breast-feeding (BF) in those under 6 months of age was 11·0 %. Early initiation of BF was 28 %. A greater child's birth order, partner's support for BF, higher parental education, maternal BF knowledge and non-smoking were associated with higher odds of meeting BF recommendations. As for complementary feeding, 92·8 % of children (6-23 months) met the minimum meal frequency indicator, 37·5 % met the minimum dietary diversity (MDD) and 34·4 % met the minimum adequate diet (MAD). The consumption of unhealthy food was observed amongst 48·9 % of children, with nearly 37 % consuming sweet beverages. Older maternal age and maternal overweight/obesity were associated with lower odds of meeting MDD and MAD, while child's age and partner's support for BF were associated with higher odds. Conclusions: The results documented suboptimal IYCF practices amongst Lebanese children and identified a number of factors associated with these practices. Findings from this study will help guide the development of culture-specific programmes aimed at improving IYCF practices in Lebanon. © The Author(s), 2022.
