The preservation of cultural heritage, such as the Lascaux cave with its 20,000-year-old cave paintings, is of great importance to human history. The decorated walls of the Lascaux cave must be carefully studied to avoid any risk of alteration, such as green rot, mould or the presence of calcite. It is common practice to study the walls separately from the surrounding environment, without taking into account the heterogeneity of the medium or its thermal exchanges with the outside environment. However, to understand the risk of changes affecting the decorated cave wall, it is essential to consider all these elements as a global ecosystem. In this context, it is necessary to carry out an in-depth characterisation of the thermo-physical properties of the materials constituting the rock mass surrounding the cavity, in order to better understand its thermal behaviour by studying the coupling between the external climate and the geology of the site. This work aims to refine the existing 3D thermal model (homogeneous medium) by taking into account variations in the thermo-physical properties of the rock mass (heterogeneous medium). In order to gain a better understanding of the thermal behaviour of the cave, a physical characterisation of the rock mass was carried out in situ using non-destructive methods such as Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT). These measurements represent the electrical resistivity of the materials according to 2D profiles distributed throughout the massif surrounding the cave. To classify the massif into different materials with similar properties, machine learning algorithms were used to classify the resistivity data. Once the data had been classified, kriging interpolation was used to create a 3D model representing the entire rock mass, divided into 2 to 7 materials, which were assumed to be physically and thermally homogeneous. The thermal characterisation of the materials is based on the phase shift and attenuation of the thermal waves propagating from the outside (at ground level) to each sensor. It should be noted that the cave is equipped with 21 sensors measuring the temperature of the walls at different depths (up to 21 m). Analysis of the thermal data allowed us to establish a relationship with the physical properties (resistivities) of the surrounding materials. An inverse method, based on an objective function that depends on the phase shift and attenuation of the measured and simulated waves, was used to estimate the thermal diffusivity of each material. This optimisation problem was solved using the Nelder-Mead algorithm, which proved to be robust and fast. The results obtained using this method were used to characterise the thermal diffusivity of each material in accordance with the expected physics. A simulation of heat conduction over 6 years was then carried out using the different diffusivity values in the thermal model and compared with temperature measurements.Future thermo-aerodynamic simulations based on the thermal properties of the massif determined in this work will make it possible to locate the areas most exposed to condensation according to the season, and will help to plan the annual conservation interventions in the cave. This process is essential for guiding conservation policies and future management decisions at Lascaux cave

The geometry of caves and infiltration zones as well as the rainfall infiltration processes in karst areas are complex and still not completely understood. This knowledge is, however, crucial for the interpretation of speleothem-based climatic reconstructions, water sustainability, and heritage conservation. In order to deepen our knowledge on this topic, we choose a typical shallow cave (Villars Cave, SW-France) that has been monitored for decades and where numerous studies have been already made on both present-day environment and speleothem studies. The first question that we worked on was about the rainfall “input” signal above the Villars Cave. What is the source of the rainfall above the cave, and how does it vary? For that, we used a backtracking (HYSPLIT) model to better understand the rainfall original oxygen isotopic sources (δ18O) of the seepage water. Results revealed a well-marked seasonality of the rainfall sources and long-term trends, depending on the distance between Villars Cave and moisture source regions, expressed in the percentage of initial moisture sources (PIMS). The second question concerns the characterization of the infiltration and its time evolution using isotopic composition from the rainfall to the stalactite dripping water that feeds stalagmites. We used both a very long monitoring (>20 years) isotopic data set (of rainfall and dripping rates at a different level in this cave) combined with a conceptual model (KarstFor) that mixes water flows and isotopes to better understand the process of karst infiltration. Results showed that the modeled output variations in the quantity of storage water and infiltration flow coincide with the observed dripping discharge rates made under stalactites at two different gallery levels in the cave. The fact that the model strikingly simulates the small, but constant, isotopic difference between the upper and the lower galleries of Villars Cave, not only reinforces the model itself but also reveals the impact of multiple infiltration routes and karst reservoir dynamics on the drip-water δ18O. The third question focused on the geometry of the infiltration zone: water reservoirs and preferential flow routes. For that, we applied a 2D ERT (Electrical resistivity tomography) method above the Villars Cave at a one-two monthly interval during three years (February 2020 and January 2023). With the help of a multidimensional statistical approach (Hierarchical agglomerative clustering, HAC), ERT monitoring images revealed the seasonal variation of resistivity in different ERT regions. This allowed us to visualize specific karst zones characterized by their resistivity and their variability in resistivity, leading to the identification of cave galleries, water storage reservoirs, wetting fronts, soil layers and potential preferential flow paths as deep as 30 m. By combining ERT, hydrology and isotopic methods, we have significantly improved our understanding of the source and variability of the water flow above Villars Cave, as well as the mixing processes in the reservoirs that feed the stalactites. This knowledge is invaluable for the preservation of the cave environment and for speleothem- based paleoclimatic research

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

This thesis focuses on the use of infrared thermography as a tool for non destructive testing ofbuildings. Mainly, the application is on civil engineering projects. The first part includes identifying the parameters that can affect this in situ technique. Thisparticularly deals with the infrared thermography capacity to detect intrinsic property variations, anddelamination detection. Combination of experiments on concrete slabs and numerical simulationsare used. In a first step, a study on the capacity of thermography to detect porosity and watercontent variation was conducted. In a second step a study on the thresholds for detectingdelaminations based on exposure conditions is carried out. As an outcome, the threshold that hasbeen detected corresponds to a ratio of 2 between the lateral extension of the defect and its depthto direct sunlight; while a ratio of 3,3 if it is exposed to air temperature variations. This studysuggests that a time monitoring combined with the study of the evolution of temporal temperaturegradients can improve the detection limits. Finally, an original study showed the predominance ofthe influence of bridging on the depth of delamination. The second part tackles the works carried out during the ANR project SENSO. Results fromdifferent non destructive tools were coupled for the purpose of improving diagnosis in the assetmanagement

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    Get PDF
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
