    Computer Aided Electric Power Availability Based Dynamic Production Planning of a Small Scale Industry

    As experienced in the past four-five years, the electric power generation in the country is not meeting the requirements of the industrial sector resulting in the loss of production and profit . In such a situation it becomes obligatory on the part of the management to plan the production based on available electric power. In this work , the dynamic production planning from month to month over a planning horizon of one year has been carried out . The planning problem was formulated in the linear programming format taking into account the various strategies to meet the demand . A computer program for dynamic production planning was developed and run on the computer . Four different types of demand patterns were investigated. Production planning according to the electric power availability is likely to reduce the overall cost of the product . The unit cost in a given period of planning horizon is dependent on the power availability and the demand pattern

    Development of Weld Thermal Simulation for Gas Flame Heating

    oai:tudr.thapar.edu:10266/7109Direct experimental methods to investigate changes in micro-structure and mechanical properties in Heat - Affected Zone (HAZ) of weld plate is almost impossible , due to small size of HAZ . The only alternative available is to undergo simulation studies , which can be carried out theoretically as well as experimentally . Experimental simulation can be done with the help of a open and closed loop systems. Closed loop simulation is expensive as compared to open loop simulation . With this in mind , an attempt has been made to carry out simulation studies with the help of an open loop type thermal simulator using gas flame as an inexpensive heating source . In it emphasis is given on peak temperature and at-part of the thermal cycle . These factors are mainly responsible for the phase change of steel. Theoretical simulation is done by considering assumed linear continuous cooling time ( CCT ) curve and a computer programme has been developed for this analysis. Comparison of results for hardness is made for both the techniques . Hardness trend obtained from the computer aided simulation , appears to be closely related to the experimental results , with the variations of cooling rates in the critical zone

    Optimal Distribution of Heat Transfer Areas in Feed Water Heaters in a 210 MW Thermal Power Plant

    Regenerative feed water heating has become a standard practice in steam power plants as it gives higher cycle efficiency because of minimization of irreversibility in the feed water heating process and increase in average temperature of heat addition to the cycle . An attempt has been made in this work to optimize the distribution of heat transfer areas of various heaters in the regenerative feed water heating cycle of one of the units of 2 x 210 MW coal fired steam power plant of BHEL design . The design of power plants has been carried out traditionally on the basis of experience , but the application of modern optimization techniques to design parameters could bring in large saving in materials or better utilization of given materials . The work aims at optimizing the feed water heater areas made available in the design of BHEL for 210 MW steam power plants. The work is based on theoretical formulations available in open literature for convection /condensation and it has been concluded that by using values of overall heat transfer coefficient calculated by these formulations for various heater conditions , better values of optimal areas for different heaters are achieved than in the case where a fixed value of heat transfer coefficient is used for all the heaters . The calculated values of overall heat transfer coefficient compare favourably with the data supplied by BHEL. There is a saving of about 5.6 extraction steam in the optimal design over that of actual design . In actual design the total quantity of steam extracted is 1,84,306 Kg/hr where as in the optimal design a the quantity of steam extracted is 1,74,038 Kg/hr . The steam thus saved can be utilized for producing more power. The calculations for overall heat transfer coefficient as well as optimal distribution of areas for feed water heaters have been done with the help of computer by writing two separate computer programs . The convergence for each step has been obtained in an iterative manner . Dynamic programming has been used for optimization. It is hoped that optimal studies can provide better design of power plants when applied to now systems , yet to be installed

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
