Anahtar kelimeler: erkeklikler, cinsiyet, patriyarka, hegemonik erkeklikAnnie Ernaux, one of the influential female authors of French literature, has become the focal point of the interdisciplinary studies of the 20th century, due to the sociological background of her writings. The simplicity of her language and the strikingness of her realism make the author popular in both individual and social identity studies. In her writings, she conveys to her readers with all sincerity: the woman, the conflict between generations, briefly being the other in a community and the burden it brings. In her novel “Passion simple” (Eng. Simple Passion), the author describes her interest and passion for a married man with all its simplicity and realism in an autobiographical structure. In the novel, Ernaux reveals forbidden love, obsession, the logic of irrationality, the conflict of power and willpower. For this reason, the novel in question has been examined in a social and psychological context where woman is at the centre. The aim of this study is to deal with the other part of the narrative, the man. In the context of the "Masculinities" theories put forward by R.W. Connell, it is aimed to reveal the structure of this other less-mentioned hero of the novel and the obsession it carries in the light of semiotic data. After the analysis of the hero as an individual, it is envisaged to explain and provide the role of this character, who is the focus of passion, in the social structure. In this context, it will be important to examine the adaptation of the man in the novel to gender roles, his contribution to the definition of this role, and how the intersection of culture and identity structures the phenomenon of masculinity. Consequently, the article, drawing on sociologically informed concept of masculinity, aims at bringing a new dimension to the gender-oriented literary criticism on the novel that has hitherto revolved around women, by offering reading focused on the constitution of the identities of men. Keywords: masculinities, gender, patriarchy, hegemonic masculinit

Michel Houellebecq's "Extension du domaine de la lutte" presents a nuanced exploration of masculinity through the anonymous narrator, a man struggling to find meaning in late twentieth- century French society. Using the narrator as a lens, the novel demonstrates how the idealised image of masculinity, fuelled by consumerism and social expectations, can lead to alienation and desolation. The narrator's experiences reflect how these pressures can lead to a sense of emptiness, depicting the individual struggle within a wider context of the erosion of traditional values. By using Connell’s vocabulary, Houellebecq presents an unattainable hegemonic masculinity, placing his protagonist in a position of subordinate masculinity. The narrator's failure to conform to this idealised masculinity is presented as a source of distress and despair, illustrating the personal cost of the struggle for masculinity. At the same time, the critique of consumer society, heavily influenced by Bourdieu, highlights the impact of consumerism on individuals and their relationships. The constant quest for material goods, success and recognition shapes the narrator's perception of masculinity, creating a sense of chronic dissatisfaction. This article aims to describe the narrative and its link with the general concept of masculinities in the sociological approach to the theoretical structure of R.W. Connell's books 'Masculinities' and 'Gender' and social consumerism in Bourdieu's theories

Traces of `Sub-creation': Applicability of Life Experiences to J.R.R. Tolkien's Literature

Whether the English author J.R.R. Tolkien is present in his works, and if so, how, has been a very thoroughly discussed issue concerning this author and his literary work. This dissertation is an attempt to try and find examples that deal with the potential applicability of the life of the author J.R.R. Tolkien in some works of his ‘sub-created’ mythology. In order to do so, the biography of the author is going to be compared to three stories by him: The Lord of the Rings, The Children of Húrin and Of Beren and Lúthien. The main body of the essay has been divided into two sections, since each of them seems to be influenced in a different manner by the life experiences of the author. The results that have been drawn from the comparison of the texts mentioned above has suggested that, in fact, there are reasons to think there could be echoes of Tolkien’s biography in his mythology. These similarities appear to be related mainly to the portrayal of nature in The Lord of the Rings and to the shape that is given to very relevant characters in the legendarium of Tolkien like Túrin Turambar and Beren, apart from other ‘secondary’ characters. Concerning the treatment of nature, it can be seen that it is Tolkien’s beliefs and thoughts about it that are mostly portrayed in his work. As for the characters of Túrin and Beren, as well as for some others in those same stories, they seem to be an attempt on behalf of Tolkien of shaping them according to specific passages and experiences of his own life. On the light of this, it is suggested that Tolkien could have made use of what is known as ‘autofiction’ when constructing such characters. Finally, some concluding remarks have been made

    No full text
Sustainable housing transformationsOTB Research Institut

The article analyses the impact of folktales on J.R.R. Tolkien’s story about Beren and Lúthien. The story was numerously rewritten and modified by the author, so the article focuses on three versions: The Tale of Tinúviel (written c. 1917), The Lay of Leithian (written 1925–1931) and Quenta Silmarillion (written c. 1937), the last of which is the textual base for The Silmarillion (1973). The major instruments of analysis are the Aarne-Thompson-Uther Index and Vladimir Propp’s folk-tale characters functions. Beren and Lúthien emerges from several folktale types, along with numerous mythological and literary sources. The dominant type is ATU 460–499 (“Supernatural Task”), especially ATU 461 (“Three Hairs of the Devil”), but there are also references to ATU 550 (“The Golden Bird”) and ATU 551 (“The Water of Life”). The functions of the hero, the princess, and the helper are performed by, respectively, Beren, Lúthien, and Huan. However, the functions of the hero and the princess are distributed between the two protagonists and Lúthien assumes the hero’s function because she actively takes part in performing the supernatural task. The reason is that gender roles are subordinated to more important division between the human (Beren) and the divine (Lúthien, who resembles both a solar deity and a Christological figure). The convention of the folktale is also alluded to by stereotypical characteristics and moral values ascribed to the dog, the wolf, and the cat. The Tale of Tinúviel can be recognized as an etiological tale of the type ATU 200 (“The Dog’s Certificate”).The article analyses the impact of folktales on J.R.R.

    No full text

An investigation into flow behavior and acoustic mechanisms at the trailing edge of an airfoil

    No full text
© 2016, © The Author(s) 2016. The aerodynamic and acoustic testing of a NACA0012 airfoil section was performed in an open wind tunnel, focusing on noise mechanisms at the trailing edge to identify and understand sources of noise production. The sound measurement profiles were captured by embedding microphones along the chord at various distances from the trailing edge and at different geometric angles of attack. The embedded microphones have successfully captured all noise sources due to aerodynamic flow over the NACA 0012 airfoil at the trailing edge, which included the following major peak frequencies: 44, 93, 166, and 332 Hz. The fundamental frequency of the model tested was identified by peak frequency (166 Hz). It appears that these frequencies do not deviate as the angle of attack is increased. The general trend is Strouhal numbers decrease as the flow moves downstream which indicates the amount of resonance (i.e. periodic, non-random vortices) decreases further downstream, which is to be expected given the onset of turbulence. Two bands of frequencies were identified. The frequency spectra between 1 and 3 kHz show a measure of far-field noise energy while frequency spectra in the range 3–10 kHz show near-field noise energy which is due to mechanisms associated with wake flow (separation)
