No full textA friend and executor of Algardi, the medallist Gaspare Morone continued his collaboration with the Bolognese sculptor's pupils even after his death, especially with Girolamo Lucenti and Domenico Guidi.
This is proved by the decoration commissioned by Morone's sister for the Chapel of the Magi in Santa Maria del Suffragio, Rome, completed in 1678, where both Morone and his brother-in-law Pietro Martire Neri were buried; marble portraits of them were made by Lucenti (to judge by its style) and Guidi, respectively. The latter's work is now also confirmed by hitherto neglected documentary evidence.
Beyond a review of the principal phases of this little-known commission, the article investigates some aspects of the relationship between medal-making and sculpture in Rome during the second half of the seventeenth century, with special focus on the multi-faceted figure of Lucenti (bronze-caster, medallist, sculptor), chosen by Morone to succeed him at the Roman Mint, after his death in 1669, as official engraver

No full textAn unpublished notarial document regarding an episode from the married life of Carlo Maratti, countersigned by Giovan Pietro Bellori and dated 9 March 1675, offers the occasion for a rapid review of the painter’s biographical fortunes during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, especially bearing in mind the general silence of the sources about his family situation. The article focuses especially on the biography of Maratti left unfinished by Bellori, and — thanks to a letter by Giovan Battista Pacichelli published in 1695 but overlooked by scholarship regarding the Roman antiquarian — gives a broader context for how it was intended to form part of a revised and expanded edition of the Vite, in preparation during the five years preceding the writer’s death
