Cougar: Concept and new approach to service management by using simulation

    No full text
This paper proposes the challenges introduced by the development of a simulation based DSS (Decision Support System) for maintenance of complex systems such as helicopters, trains, power plants. The paper proposes the simulation architecture devoted to face this level of complexity and the critical issue analysis related to its development

Influence of Winter Pruning on Ornamental Plants Grown in Two Kinds of Container

    No full text
Pruning is an operation that assures adequate functional and aesthetic attributes to ornamental plants. A regular development of roots is essential for the plants grown in pot, because the root deformations can slow down plants establishment and compromise the stability of trees. The aim of this research was to investigate the performances in the nursery of Elaeagnus × ebbingei 'Limelight', Ligustrum lucidum 'Excelsum Superbum' and Malus 'Profusion' grown in two different containers (a traditional and a modified container for “air pruning” effect on roots) and pruned with increasing intensity (light, moderate and severe) compared with unpruned plants. Some differences among treatments were observed in all species. In Elaeagnus × ebbingei 'Limelight' unpruned plants had the lowest score and the best results were obtained with pruning from moderate to severe intensity because they guaranteed a regular plant architecture. In Ligustrum lucidum 'Excelsum Superbum' the unpruned control had the worst results because the plant had a weeping aspect while an uniform and round shape was obtained with light pruning. In Malus 'Profusion', unpruned plants had a worst blooming whereas severe pruning gave more vigorous and flowering shoots. In all species the modified container did not reduced root weight while it prevented roots spiraling

Influence of cyclodextrins on in vitro human skin absorption of the sunscreen, butyl-methoxydibenzoylmethane

The effects of hydroxypropyl- b-cyclodextrin (HP- b-CD) and sulfobutylether- b-CD (SBE7- b-CD) on in vitro human skin penetration and retention of the sunscreen agent butyl-methoxydibenzoylmethane (BM-DBM) were investigated. The interaction between the UV filter and the cyclodextrins was studied in water by phase-solubility analysis. Solid complexes were prepared by the co-evaporation method and characterized by NMR spectroscopy, thermal analysis and powder X-ray diffraction. Solutions containing BM-DBM free or complexed with cyclodextrins were applied to excised human skin in Franz diffusion cells and the amount of sunscreen permeated after 6 h into the stratum corneum, viable epidermis, dermis and receptor fluid was assessed by HPLC. As much as 14.10–16.78% of the applied dose of BM-DBM penetrated within the skin tissue. No sunscreen was detected in the dermis and in the receiver phase. The greater proportion (84.6–95.5%) of the absorbed UV filter was localized in the stratum corneum with no significant differences between uncomplexed or complexed BM-DBM. Notable levels (2.29% of the applied dose) of the sunscreen agent accumulated in the epidermis from the preparation containing free BM-DBM. The epidermal concentration of the UV filter was markedly reduced (0.66% of the applied dose) by complexation with SBE7- b-CD, whereas HP- b-CD had no effect. The decreased BM-DBM retention in the epidermal region achieved by SBE7- b-CD limits direct contact of the sunscreen and of its reactive photolytic products with the skin viable tissues

Industrial maintenance metrics based on simulation and fuzzy logic

    No full text
This paper is focused on the development of a model for applying Reliability Centred Maintenance (RCM) on complex system by integrating simulation and artificial intelligence (AI); the application is related to maintenance planning of groups of gas turbine power plants. This paper will explain the reasons, the criticalities and the lessons learned during the development of the research, leading to the realisation of a Fuzzy Logic Schedule Evaluator (FUSE)

The paper proposes the design of new platform for fresh food logistics; this design is devoted to be implemented and integrated in company ERP and represent a good example of logistics developments in this area; in effect ad hoc logistics ERP implementations represent a challenge due to the specific process complexity and infrastructure requirements

Coseano.

Emanuele Forte coadiuvato dai collaboratori dott. Gianluca Foti e dott. Alessandro Pavan

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
