    Ultrasonic damage investigation on woven jute/poly (lactic acid) composites subjected to low velocity impact

    n the present contribution, particular attention is devoted to the fabrication and characterization of fully bio laminated structures based on a commercial poly (lactic acid) (PLA) including a jute fabric as reinforcements, even because of the limited availability of the reference literature. An ultrasonic technique is used to investigate the delamination caused by low velocity impact tests, on plates obtained by typical film stacking and compression molding techniques. The square specimens, 100*100 mm, were impacted by a falling dart machine at five increasing impact energy values of 2 J, 5 J, 10 J, 12 J, and 15 J. The delamination is investigated by the very commonly used Ultra Sound technique employing a linear phased array probe. The delaminated area is correlated with both the impact energy and the measured indentation depth. The results showed a threshold energy for the beginning of the internal damage. Moreover, a linear relationship between the delaminated area, the energy and the indentation depth was found. © 2016 Elsevier Lt

    Low velocity impact damage in composite laminates based on waste polyolefins

    AbstractComposite laminates based on polyolefin wastes coming from two different sources are compared with similar systems involving a virgin polypropylene in terms of damage behavior. In particular, this paper reports the response of film-stacked composite laminate plates subjected to falling weight impact tests. As expected, samples based on recycled polyolefins show lower impact parameters with respect to the latter ones even if a partial improvement of the performances can be obtained by modification of the matrix by an adequate coupling agent. Despite the inferior impact behavior, potential uses of new systems provide an opportunity to develop valuable products by reducing the environmental impact of plastic wastes

    Thermoplastic polyurethane/glass fabric composite laminates: Low velocity impact behavior under extreme temperature conditions

    This paper reports the low velocity impact behavior of thermoplastic laminated structures based on thermoplastic polyurethane reinforced with woven glass fiber highlighting effects related to sample thickness and test temperature with the aim to verify their potential applications. Plaques obtained by film stacking and compression molding technologies are tested using an instrumented falling dart machine at room temperature, −25 °C and −50 °C. Impact results are reported in terms of typical load-deflection and energy-time curves, but also discussed with reference to the well known ductility index (DI) parameter. As expected, the cooling is reflected in an increased stiffness of tested specimens and their higher propensity to the damage. Increases of plate thickness and reductions of the test temperature lead to enhanced friction phenomena at the material-dart contact, responsible of significant deviations from well established semi-empirical models about the Hertz contact force and the penetration energy. Finally, no delamination phenomena seem to be verified for all investigated samples as supported by visual inspections of front and rear impacted areas

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
