Effect of sperm concentration on characteristics of frozen-thawed semen in donkeys
In this study, the effect of donkey sperm concentration in the straw during cryopreservationon the quality of thawed semen was evaluated. Samples from seven adult Martina Francajackasses were collected three times using a Missouri artificial vagina. After estimation ofvolume and concentration, raw semen was evaluated for motility using a computer-assistedsperm analyzer (CASA); viability and acrosome integrity were also determined. Fresh semenwas then centrifuged and re-suspended at five different concentrations (100, 250, 500,750, and 1000×106 sperm/ml) with a commercial extender, packaged in 0.5 ml straws, andfrozen. After thawing, motility parameters, viability, and acrosome integrity were analyzed.The analysis of the data showed similar parameters of fresh semen compared with those ofcentrifuged and cooled samples. The sperm concentration in the straw affected the semenparameters analyzed after thawing, as suggested by evidence that when the concentrationincreased, the quality of the post-thawed semen decreased. Furthermore, the differencesin total and progressive motility among samples at different concentrations are due to theimmobilization of spermatozoa, as suggested by the finding that the percentage of staticspermatozoa increased when the concentration increased. The reason for the impairmentof semen quality when the sperm concentration increased was discussed. A great variabilityin cryo-resistance was found between jackasses but not within the same male, suggestingthe presence of donkey males with semen that has acceptable and unacceptable freezingqualities.[...

The aim of the present study was to describe theclinical findings and treatment in a foetus macerationcase in a ten year-old jenny. Obstetric examinationwas performed by transrectal palpation and adead foetus in longitudinal disposition, down position,posterior presentation and posterior limbs flexedto hip was fingered. On transrectal ultrasonography,fluid containing echogenic particles and hyperechoicstructures (bone segments) in the uteruswere visible. By caesarean section dead foetus wasextracted and the uterus was carefully curetted andflushed with ringer lactate. The histological examinationperformed on a uterine sample revealed alympho-plasmocytic inflammation on the myometriumwith degenerative signs of some smooth musclefibers, then fetal maceration was diagnosed. Aftersurgery the animal was in good condition andforty days later the jenny showed estrus signs followedby ovulation and a regular reproductive cyclefor frequency, duration and intensity were reported.[...
CORRELATION BETWEEN ARTERIAL AND VENOUS BLOOD GAS ANALISYS IN HEALTHY NEWBORN DONKEY FOALS
ABSTRACT – Blood gas analysis is a useful tool for the evaluation of early healthstatus of the newborn. Furthermore, it plays a key role in the detection of the criticallyill patient. The study was performed on 8 Martina Franca donkey healthy foals bornfrom uncomplicated delivery. Arterial and venous blood samples were collected at 5minutes and at 12, 24, 72 and 96 hours of age. Blood gas analysis was performed by aportable analyzer, measuring arterial and venous total carbon dioxide (TCO2), carbondioxide partial pressure (pCO2), oxygen partial pressure (pO2), oxygen saturation (SO2),bicarbonate (HCO3), bases excess (BE), pH, and lactate (LT). As expected, there weresignificantly differences between arterial and venous blood gas parameters related to theoxygenation, such as pO2 and SO2. On the other hand, TCO2, pCO2, HCO3, BE, pH andLactate were comparable in arterial and venous blood samples.[...
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. Blood analysis in newborn donkeys: hematology, biochemistry, and blood gases analysis
The knowledge of reference ranges for hematologic, biochemical, and blood gas parameters in the different species and the influence of breed and age on them is a fundamental tool for the clinician. For this reason, the aim of this study was to evaluate the age-related changes of hematologic and biochemical parameters in Martina Franca donkey foals during the first 3 weeks of life and of blood gases during the first 24 hours of age. Fifteen healthy donkey foals were enrolled; blood samples were collected from each foal at 10 minutes after birth, 1 hour after the first and second suckles, 12 and 24 hours after birth, daily from Day 2 to 7, and at Days 10, 14, and 21 of life. Erythrocytes, leukocytes, and platelets counts were assessed; also metabolic (alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, gamma glutamyl transferase, creatinphospokinase, lactate dehydrogenase, alkaline phosphatase, glucose, blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, total proteins, albumins, cholesterol, and total bilirubin) and electrolytic parameters (Ca, P, Mg, Na, K, and Cl) were evaluated. Finally, blood gases and metabolic parameters (pH, pCO2, pO2, sO2, TCO2, HCO3, lactate, and base excess) on venous blood were assessed with a portable analyzer. A statistical analysis to evaluate the influence of age and sex was performed. Several differences were found between sampling times, demonstrating that age influences these parameters. Moreover differences were found compared with data reported in literature for donkey foals of another species, horse foals, and adult donkeys. Although a great interindividual variation for some parameters exists, this study demonstrated that interval references should be addressed not only to different species, but also to specific breeds and to the neonatal period
