    Pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms: Practical approach to diagnosis, classification, and therapy

    This book provides a broad overview of pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms, focusing on the most important developments in the technologies used to diagnose, classify and treat them.     High-grade poorly differentiated neuroendocrine carcinomas of the gastroenteropancreatic system: from morphology to proliferation and back

    Poorly differentiated neuroendocrine carcinomas (PDNECs) of the gastroenteropancreatic system (GEP) are a heterogeneous group of aggressive malignancies with a high propensity for distant metastases and an ominous prognosis. They have traditionally been divided into small and large cell subtypes on morphological grounds. However, histological diagnosis needs to be supported by immunohistochemistry to avoid possible misdiagnoses either with the more frequent poorly differentiated adenocarcinomas and squamous cell carcinomas or with lymphomas and mesenchymal neoplasms. Although it is well known that GEP PDNECs are associated with a poor prognosis, data from some published studies seem to suggest that there is a fraction of patients with PDNECs who have better survival than expected. GEP PDNECs are currently classified according to the criteria proposed in the 2010 WHO classification. They are simply called neuroendocrine carcinomas (NECs) and are defined by mitotic count >20 × 10 HPF and/or Ki-67 labeling index >20 %. However, a few recent papers have indicated that some NECs, as defined by the 2010 WHO scheme, do not show a poorly differentiated morphology as expected. This category seems to show a better prognosis and, especially, does not respond to cisplatin-based chemotherapy, which represents the goal standard therapeutic approach to high-grade PDNECs. In the present review, the main morphological, immunohistochemical, and prognostic features will be discussed as well as the opportunity to introduce a new category characterized by well to moderately differentiated morphology associated with high proliferation (mitotic count >20 × 10 HPF and/or Ki-67 index >20 %

    Optimization of biochar quality and yield from tropical timber industry wastes

    The conversion of timber industry waste to biochar was investigated, based on residues from local tropical hardwoods in Cameroon. Closed and flow reactors, loaded with few grams of the sample and fluxed with different inert gases, were used with the aim of converting these wood residues to a safe and efficient solid fuel that can be exploited by the local community for cooking purposes. The pyrolysis temperature had the highest impact on the process up to approximately 700 °C as biochar yields decreased from 87 to 23.5% while increasing the temperature. A significant concentration of carbon required temperatures greater than 500 °C for the biochar to become a good solid fuel, approaching the heating value of coal. The role of heating rate appeared marginal even in a broad range: 0.1 to 70 °C/min. The dwell time (in the range 0.5 to 5 h) at maximum temperature revealed to be of little influence on the charring which occurred mostly during the first few minutes of the isothermal phase. Thus, actual production time can be <1 h/batch (up to 500 °C at 10 °C/min). Stepwise heating revealed a sequence of devolatilization reactions following their activation energies. Use of CO2 as inert gas increased the char yield. The inert gas flow rate had two contrasting effects on the biochar yield, in relation to volatile components residence time and the biomass temperature. The reactivity of biochar in combustion suggests a trade-off between heating content and reactivity. Charring in a closed, pressurized reactor produced biochar of low value as fuel, with tars absorbed in the porous solid residue

    Deep eutectic solvents: a structural point of view on the role of the cation

    In this work we have developed an analytical procedure to identify metal ion coordination geometries in liquid media based on the calculation of Combined Distribution Functions (CDFs) starting from Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations. CDFs provide a fingerprint which can be easily and unambiguously assigned to a reference polyhedron. The CDF analysis has been tested on five systems and has proven to reliably identify the correct geometries of several ion coordination complexes. This tool is simple and general and can be efficiently applied to different MD simulations of liquid systems

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
