    Steady-state analysis and scheduling of cyclic job shops with overtaking

    A cyclic shop is a production system that repeatedly produces identical sets of parts of multiple types, called minimal part sets (MPSs), in the same loading and processing sequence. A different part type may have a different machine visit sequence. We consider a version of cyclic job shop where some operations of an MPS instance are processed prior to some operations of the previous MPS instances. We call such a shop an overtaking cyclic job shop (OCJS). The overtaking degree can be specified by how many MPS instances the operations of an MPS instance can overtake. More overtaking results in more work-in-progress, but reduces the cycle time, in general. We prove that for a given processing sequence of the operations at each machine, under some conditions, an OCJS has a stable earliest starting schedule such that each operation starts as soon as its preceding operations are completed, the schedule repeats an identical timing pattern for each MPS instance, and the cycle time is kept to be minimal. To do these, we propose a specialized approach to analyzing steady states for an event graph model of an OCJS that has a cyclic structure, which can keep the MPS-based scheduling concept.     The Presence of Urinary Ketones according to Metabolic Status and Obesity

    BACKGROUND: Recently, new concepts about obesity and normal weight subtypes with metabolic conditions are rising and ketone bodies are emerging as a significant indicator of metabolic health. This study aimed to find a relationship between ketonuria and those subtypes. METHODS: The data of 19,036 subjects were analyzed in this cross-sectional study (2013-2017 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, KNHANES). Based on body mass index and adult treatment panel III with modification of waist circumference, individuals were categorized into 4 groups: metabolically healthy normal weight (MHNW), metabolically healthy obese (MHO), metabolically unhealthy normal weight (MUNW), and metabolically unhealthy obese (MUO). Individuals were divided into 2 groups, positive and negative ketonuria groups, and the metabolic parameters were compared. RESULTS: The metabolic indicators of the positive ketonuria group showed better results than those of the negative ketonuria group and the MHNW group showed the highest proportion of positive ketonuria. The MHNW group showed higher urinary ketones than the MUO group (odds ratio [OR], 0.391; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.254-0.601) in men. In women, OR of having ketonuria was 0.698 (95% CI, 0.486-1.002) in the MHO group and 0.467 (95% CI, 0.226-0.966) in the MUNW group compared to the MHNW group, respectively. CONCLUSION: Compared to the MHNW group, the MUO group showed lower presence of ketonuria in men, and tendency to have less ketonuria in women

    Improvement of detected intensity in confocal microscopy by using reflecting optical system

    In confocal microscopy, the level of the detected intensity is low, which reduces the contrast of the images. We propose a reflecting optical system to improve the detected intensity. The result of the optimal design is presented and the performance of the resulting reflecting optical system is evaluated. A numerical simulation of the effect of the reflecting optical system on the total system performance is also presented. A standard specimen is imaged to show the benefits of the proposed reflecting optical system. The results in this Note demonstrate a 37% increase of the detected intensity and better contrast of the image. (C) 2004 American Institute of Physics

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
