    Investigation of Total Antioxidant Status and Total Oxidant Status with Seizure Types in Patients with Epilepsy

    BACKGROUND/AIMS: As epilepsy is a complex disease group, it is difficult to diagnose and classify. Oxidative stress plays a vital role in the pathogenesis of epilepsy. This study investigated the total oxidant/antioxidant status levels in patients with focal onset and generalized onset seizures. The results we obtained may help find the etiological cause in patients with seizure complaints and may guide their treatment. In addition, knowing the seizure type of the patient can give an idea about the prognosis of their disease.MATERIALS AND METHODS: The total number of patients included in this prospective study was 58. There were also 57 people in a control group. The patients were classified according to their type of seizure: focal or generalized onset. The serum oxidative stress index (OSI) and total oxidant/antioxidant status values of all patients and control group members were measured. The patients (focal/generalized groups) and control group members were compared.RESULTS: This prospective study was completed with 58 eligible patients who met the inclusion criteria. There were 57 people in the control group. Total oxidant status (TOS) and OSI levels were higher in the seizure groups compared to the control group (p<0.05). The difference between the serum TOS and OSI levels of patients with generalized or focal onset seizures was statistically significant.CONCLUSION: Classifying patients according to their seizure types by looking at their oxidative stress levels can guide treatment (in terms of investigating antioxidant activity) and give an idea about prognosis. This study showed the importance of TOS and OSI levels in patients presenting with seizures. This was particularly evident in generalized onset seizures. An evaluation of serum TOS and OSI levels in patients presenting with seizures may help us in clinical diagnosis, treatment, and classification.Keywords: Epilepsy, total oxidant status, seizure types, total antioxidant statu

    2007 IEEE 15th Signal Processing and Communications Applications, SIU -- 11 June 2007 through 13 June 2007 -- Eskisehir -- 73089In this study we propose an infrared thermography and artificial neural networks (ANNs) based method for obtaining the fatigue state of the steel specimen under bending fatigue. We use the thermal images (TIs) of the specimen under bending fatigue, taken by FLIR E45 infrared camera at 1 Hz. By processing TIs using ANNs we obtain temperatures of the characteristic spots of the specimen surface. Based on these temperatures we fit curve on which we fix the temperatures of all spots of the specimen surface. The region of hottest spots of the TI obtained by this method allows us to kept under control the probably crack region of the tested specimen until it is fractured

    Nuh b. Mustafa (v. 1070/1660) 17. asırda Osmanlı Devletinde yetişen, fıkıh, kelam ve hadis gibi ilim dallarında pek çok eser yazmasına rağmen günümüzde kendisi ve eserleri hakkında çok fazla bilgi sahibi olmadığımız önemli alimlerden biridir. Bu çalışmamızda Nuh b. Mustafa'nın el-Kelimatü'ş-şerife adlı eserinin edisyon kritiğini yapmak suretiyle hem onun bir eserini gün yüzüne çıkarmayı hem de kendisi ve eserleri hakkında ayrıntılı bilgi vermeyi amaçladık. İki kısımdan oluşan çalışmamızın birinci yani dirase kısmı bir giriş ve iki bölümden oluşmaktadır. Bunu ikinci yani tahkik kısmı takip etmektedir. Birinci kısmın girişinde konunun amacı, önemi, faydalanılan kaynaklar ve müellifin yaşadığı dönemim ilmi durumu, birinci bölümde Nuh b. Mustafa'nın hayatı ve eserleri üzerinde durulmuştur. İkinci bölümde de edisyon kritiğini yaptığımız eserin ayrıntılı olarak tanıtımı yapılmıştır. İkinci kısımda ise el yazması halinde bulunan eserin üç farklı nüshasını karşılaştırmak suretiyle en doğru metin ortaya çıkarılmaya çalışılmış ve bu metin modern imla kurallarını da göz önünde bulundurarak bilgisayar ortamında kayda geçirilmiştir.Nuh b. Mustafa (1070/1660) was one of the most outstanding scholars of the Ottoman Empire. Although he wrote many books in the areas of Hadith, Cannon Law and Islamic Theology we don?t know much about him and his works. In this study, by transcribing Nuh b. Mustafa?s book el-Kelimatü?ş-şerife, I aimed at bringing it to light on one hand, and giving detailed information about him and his works on the other. The study is commposed of two main parts. The first part, the introduction, is devided into three subparts: the introduction and two more parts. It is followed by the second main part, the transcription of the manuscript. At the beginning of the first main part of the study, the goal and the importance of the study, the resources used and the acadamic conditions of the time when the author lived were focused on. In the following subpart, I made a detailed introduction of the book transcribed. In the second main part, firstly, I tried to discover the most accurate text by commparing three different copies of the book, and then, I typed this text on the computer by also taking into consideration the modern orthograpy

    Digital outdoor cameras are increasingly used in wildlife research because they allow species inventories, population estimates, and behavior or activity observations. Which camera model is suitable and practical depends on environmental conditions, focus species and specific scientific questions posed. Here we focused on testing cameras appropriate for elusive species that can be identified visually owing to individual coat patterns. Specifically the camera should be adequate for calculating the minimum population of Eurasian Lynx (Lynx lynx) during a systematic monitoring with camera traps. Therefore we tested six digital camera models with regard to trigger speed and the image quality necessary for visual identification of pacing lynx on trails. The decision if a camera model is adequate for the scientific goal was regulated due to priority levels under laboratory conditions. Only one camera model proved to be suitable for camera-trap monitoring. Our practical camera test can be used to evaluate newer models of digital cameras as they become available. This application opens an avenue for a non-invasive population monitoring of rare and elusive species in a low mountain range area.Digitale Fotofallen werden weltweit in der Wildtierforschung eingesetzt. Die Einsatzgebiete sind vielfältig, sie reichen von Artenbestandsaufnahmen und Populationsschätzungen über die Verhaltensforschung bis hin zu Aktivitätsanalysen. Das jeweilig eingesetzte Kameramodell muss an die Aufnahmesituation und die Zielsetzung der Analyse angepasst sein. Das Ziel unseres Fotofallentests war es, ein Modell zu finden, welches für die visuelle Identifizierung von Fellmustern des Eurasischen Luchses geeignet ist. Die Fotofalle soll in einem systematischen Monitoring für die minimale Anzahl der im Gebiet vorkommenden Luchse und deren Populationsschätzung mit Fang-Wiederfang Methoden eingesetzt werden können. Bei dem Test von sechs Fotofallenmodellen, fiel das Hauptaugenmerk auf die Auslösegeschwindigkeit und die Bildqualität welche die nötigen Faktoren für die Sicherstellung der visuellen Identifikation von schreitenden Luchsen am Wildwechsel darstellen. Zur Entscheidungsfindung der Eignung eines Fotofallenmodells für die Fragestellung definierten wir Prioritätslevel unter Laborbedingungen. Es stellte sich heraus, dass nur ein Fotofallenmodell die Ansprüche erfüllte. Der praktische Fotofallentest kann für neuerscheinende Fotofallenmodelle adaptiert werden. Diese Anwendung eröffnet die Möglichkeit für ein nicht invasives Monitoring in Mittelgebirgslandschaften
