Profitability change in the global airline industry

This paper studies airline profitability change computed through a Bayesian estimation of a cost function. The stochastic frontier is applied to a dataset including the largest worldwide airlines in the period 1983–2010. We show that productivity change is mainly driven by technical change becoming continuously positive from early 1990s. Furthermore, in the last decade profitability change is mainly driven by input price change which exhibits a similar pattern to output price change. In presence of productivity growth, the output price increase is lower than the input price increase suggesting that part of productivity gains are transferred from airlines to consumers

The impact of baggage fees on passenger demand on US air routes

In recent years, US airlines have unbundled ancillary fees from base air fares. As a result, the carriers have implemented a variety of fees on a range of optional services. Among these, checked baggage fees now represent a significant source of airline revenues. This paper assesses the impact of baggage fees on passenger demand and airline fares. We study a sample of US domestic routes over the period 2007-2010 where passengers have a choice between carriers that charge fees for checked baggage and Southwest Airlines, which allows passengers one or two "free" checked bags. A system of simultaneous equations is estimated. Our results show that, on an average route, a 1increaseinbaggagefeeleadstoalossof0.7passengersandisassociatedwitha1 increase in baggage fee leads to a loss of 0.7 passengers and is associated with a 0.11 reduction in fare levels. Interestingly, an equivalent increase of $1 in fares results in a much greater decline in passengers (eight times greater). Therefore, our results support the idea that substituting additional baggage fees for higher fares may be a beneficial strategy for carriers in terms of generating revenues and maintaining market share

Air connection dropouts and isolation risks across European regions

This work focuses on the duration of air connections in Europe and investigates the main factors affecting the probability that specific air routes survive over time. Socio-economic and geographical characteristics as well as modal competition, public subsidies and other airport/carrier-related factors are investigated. Moreover, we derive from our analysis the probabilities of connection dropouts to characterize European regions on the basis of their expected risks of increasing isolation. Our results might be of particular interest for policymakers and airport managers who intend to prevent their regions/airports from being affected by the negative consequences of increasing isolation. This is especially true in a context of expected increasing consolidation by major European network carriers

An assessment of worldwide airline productivity for the years 1980-2013

This paper applies a stochastic frontier analysis approach to a sample of 77 worldwide airlines for the period 1980-2013. We compute and decompose the total factor productivity growth into efficiency, technical and scale efficiency change. Our results show that on average airlines increased productivity over the period. Efficiency and technical change improved, while scale efficiency shows that the average airline moves away from the most productive scale size (especially in the first two decades). Comparison between geographical area, business models, network and alliances are also provided

    No full text
