Heroin sensitization as mapped by c-Fos immunoreactivity in the rat striatum
Immunohistochemistry was used to map the induction of c-Fos protein in the forebrain of rats treated with heroin. Acute injection of heroin to drug-naive rats caused significant induction of c-Fos protein in the nucleus accumbens shell. whereas the sa-me dose of heroin given to drug-sensitized rats significantly increased c-Fos immunoreactivity in the dorsomedial caudate-putamen. These results show that the heroin-induced pattern of c-Fos protein in the rat striatum differs according to the rat's drug history. These findings may represent a neural correlate of the motor components of heroin sensitization. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved
Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease masked by head trauma and features of Wilson's disease
Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) is a fatal neurodegenerative disorder typically characterized by progressive dementia associated with myoclonus, cerebellar and other focal neurological signs. Electroencephalogram, brain MRI and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analyses are helpful diagnostic tools, but diagnosis in patients with atypical presenting neurological signs is often difficult to make. A 55-year-old woman developed disorientation, drowsiness and focal motor signs after a traumatic brain injury due to an accidental fall. In two weeks, her symptoms worsened in spite of a brain MRI showed an improvement of traumatic lesions, but the presence of bilateral hyperintensity in the basal nuclei was suggestive of a metabolic or prion encephalopathy. The high 24-h urinary copper level and reduction of ceruloplasmin initially supported the diagnosis of Wilson's disease, but the absence of Kayser-Fleischer rings, and the positivity of 14-3-3 protein test and elevated tau concentrations in the CSF oriented toward a diagnosis of CJD. She died 5 months after the onset, and the postmortem examination of the brain revealed immunochemical features of CJD. This case exemplifies the difficulty of a timely diagnosis when rapid progressive dementia is masked by concomitant factors (i.e., head trauma) and neurological signs are associated with unclear laboratory findings
Adrenal dysregulation in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a chronic progressive neuromuscular disorder of unknown etiology, characterized by weakness, muscle wasting, fasciculations and increased reflexes, with conserved intellect and higher function. The disease is due to degeneration of the motor neurons in the cerebral cortex, brainstem nuclei and anterior horns of the spinal cord. Although ALS poses an extreme burden on individual condition, data are missing concerning the regulation of adrenal function in the disease. In the present study we investigated cortisol levels in saliva of ALS patients as compared to healthy subjects. The results showed the loss of circadian rhythm of cortisol levels in ALS; in particular, levels of cortisol in the evening sample were significantly increased in ALS patients with respect to controls. Moreover, ALS patients did not show any physiological increase of cortisol levels following an unexpected mild stress (color-word Stroop test). These findings indicate the dysregulation of adrenal activity in the disease
Behavioral sensitization to WIN55212.2 in rats pretreated with heroin
There is evidence of similarities and interactions between central opioid and cannabinoid system with reference to drug reinforcement and abuse. Here we demonstrate that repeated injection of heroin produces behavioral sensitization towards administration of the synthetic cannabinoid receptor agonist WIN55212.2 in the rat. These effects were blocked by both the cannabinoid antagonist SR141716A and the opioid antagonist naloxone. These findings suggest that repeated exposure to heroin produces neuroadaptative changes in brain circuits that contribute to mediate the behavioral consequences of acute administration of WIN55212.2. The present results expand our knowledge on the interactions between central opioid and cannabinoid systems with respect to drug abuse. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved

Behavioral sensitization to heroin by cannabinoid pretreatment in the rat.
The behavioral consequences of acute heroin challenge (0.5 mg/kg, s.c.) were measured in rats previously submitted to repeated administration of increasing doses of the synthetic cannabinoid receptor agonist, R(+)-[2,3-dihydro-5-methyl-3-[(morpholinyl)methyl]pyrrolo-[1,2,3-de]-1,4-benzoxazinyl]-(1-naphthalenyl) methanone mesylate (WIN55212.2) (first day 2 mg/kg, second day 4 mg/kg, third day 8 mg/kg) or vehicle. Heroin administration to rats pretreated with vehicle produced catalepsy. The same dose of heroin in WIN55212.2-pretreated rats was followed by a marked increase of locomotor activity with stereotyped and non-stereotyped behaviors. These effects were blocked by the opioid receptor antagonist, naloxone. These findings indicate that pretreatment with WIN55212.2 produces cross-sensitization to heroin in the rat. These changes might reflect long-lasting changes of receptor population or transcriptional mechanisms in the mesolimbic system
Somatosensory temporal discrimination tested in patients receiving botulinum toxin injection for cervical dystonia
We designed this study to find out more about the relationship between the sensory effects of Botulinum toxin type A (BTX) and the clinical benefits of BTX therapy in patients with cervical dystonia (CD). In 24 patients with CD, we tested sensory temporal discrimination (STD) in the affected and two unaffected body regions (neck, hand, and eye) before and 1 month after BTX injection. In 8 out of the 24 patients with CD, STDT values were tested bilaterally in the three body regions before, 1 and 2 months after BTX injection. As expected, STD testing disclosed altered STD threshold values in all three body regions tested (affected and unaffected by dystonic spasms) in patients with CD. STD threshold values remained unchanged at all time points of the follow-up in all CD patients. The lack of BTX-induced effects on STD thresholds suggests that STD recruits neural structures uninvolved in muscle spindle afferent activation. (C) 2010 Movement Disorder Societ
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
