    On 11 March 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the corona virus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak as a ‘pandemic’.1 No valid therapy for COVID-19 is actually available. Severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) is empirically treated with antivirals, antimalarics,tocilizumab, etc.2 Production of a vaccine for COVID-19 has been attempted, although approval needs time. We describe a possible, alternative approach for treating COVID-19. Lymphocyte count hasbeen associated with increased disease severityrisk.3 Patients who died from COVID-19 showed a significantly lower lymphocyte count than survivors, therefore this should be closelymonitored.3 Repletion of lymphocytes couldprobably have beneficial effects on recovery. A recent hypothesis suggests that the inhibition of the angiotensin 1 receptor (AT1R) may provide benefits to COVID-19 patients.4 Thishypothesis is based on the observation that the SARS-CoV-2 virus uses angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) as a receptor to bind thevirus to the bronchial cell membrane. Theenzymes ACE and ACE2 belong to the samepeptidase family but have two very different physiological functions. ACE cleaves angiotensin I to generate angiotensin II (Ang II), whichbinds to and activates AT1R, and thus promoting vasoconstriction. ACE2 cleaves Ang II and generates angiotensin 1-7, a powerful vasodilator acting through Mas receptors. AT1R antagonists are widely used in hypertensive patientsbut they increase the ACE2 cardiac expressionin rats5 and the urinary concentration of ACE2.6 It has been demonstrated that the binding ofvirus to ACE2 leads to ACE2 down-regulation

    Diabetes mellitus worsens cardiovascular risk profile of affected individuals. Its worldwide increasing prevalence and its negative influences on vascular walls morphology and function are able to induce the expression of several morbidities which worsen the clinical conditions of the patients getting them running towards a reduced survival curve. Although overt diabetes increases the mortality rate of individuals due to its pathogenesis, poor information are in literature about the role of pre-diabetes and family history of diabetes mellitus in the outcome of general population. This emphasizes the importance of early detection of vascular impairment in subjects at risk of developing diabetes. The identification of early stages of atherosclerotic diseases in diabetic persons is a fundamental step in the risk stratification protocols followed-up by physicians in order to have a complete overview about the clinical status of such individuals. Common carotid intima-media thickness, flow-mediated vasodilatation, pulse wave velocity are instrumental tools able to detect the early impairment in cardiovascular system and stratify cardiovascular risk of individuals. The aim of this review is to get a general perspective on the complex relationship between cardiovascular diseases onset, pre-diabetes and family history of diabetes. Furthermore, it points out the influence of diabetes on heart function till the expression of the so-called diabetic cardiomyopathy

    Rethinking death education as part of public health policy

    Death and dying are still taboo subjects in today's society. In most western countries, people die mostly in hospitals, surrounded by health professionals and high technology, but with no real humanisation of care. This transfer of death from the home to hospitals, which began in the 1960s of the last century, has brought social and cultural consequences for the way we deal with the end of life. We will have to save the work of some experts, like Elisabeth Kübler-Ross (1926-2004), to consider the need for death education. Based on the work of this paradigmatic author and other studies over time, we present a set of proposals for implementing death education as part of public health policy

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
