Managing costs, revenues and yield in the tourism wellness industry
The tourism wellness industry is a rapidly growing sector facing a number of challenges in today’s fast-paced world, where people are looking for solutions to their wellness needs. Management of this demand requires the implementation of a robust strategy in order to maximise profitability and customer experience. This study considers the application of yield management as a suitable approach, which is tested in this case in day spas as part of the wellness industry. The viability of yield management in this field is investigated using a case study approach, considering particularly the conditions required, and whether this managerial method can generate significant benefits
Revenue management indicators and performance related measures in the hotel industry
Revenue management indicators in the hotel industry, such as occupancy rate and revenue per available room, prove the effectiveness of this managerial method directly related to revenues and customers. The study also considers the hotel activity in terms of operating costs and correlates revenue management indicators to the operating efficiency ratio, evaluating the impact of revenue management on hotel profitability. For this purpose, a case study approach was used based on hotels located in North and Central Italy, and Sardinia. The research shows that there is a good correlation between the growth of operating efficiency ratio and revenue per available room during the period 2006-2009 and highlights that, on average, effective revenue management strategies on revenue per available room have a direct and positive influence on profitability
Public and private practices for sustainable tourism
Tourism can generate a negative impact on environment, on communities and on the economy of destinations. Using a case study approach based on a Sardinian destination, this research analyses the potential of public and private practices for sustainable tourism development. For this purpose, the model of tourism developed in the destination has been identified on the base of the indicators suggested by international organizations and literature. The study explores the potential of private management practices, specifically demand management, to reduce the negative effects of tourism seasonality and favour sustainable tourism. The paper observes demand management applied to hotel industry and how it is able to prolong the tourism season and better distributes tourist demand throughout the year. Demand management has the potential to reduce the negative effects of a strong seasonality and can favour the sustainability of tourism in relation to destinations
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
