Magnetohydrodynamics Simulation of the Nonlinear Behavior of Single Rising Bubbles in Liquid Metals in the Presence of a Horizontal Magnetic Field

Rising bubbles in liquid metals in the presence of magnetic fields is an important phenomenon in many engineering processes. The nonlinear behavior of the terminal rise velocities of the bubbles as a function of increasing field strength has been observed experimentally, but it remains poorly understood. We offer an explanation of the phenomenon through numerical calculations. A single rising bubble in stagnant liquid metal in the presence of an applied horizontal magnetic field is simulated. The observed nonlinear behavior is successfully reproduced; the terminal velocity increases with the increase in the magnetic field strength in the lower magnetic field regions but decreases in higher regions. It is shown that, in the lower region, the increase in the average bubble rise velocity results from the suppression of the fluctuations in the bubble trajectory in the vertical plane perpendicular to the magnetic field, as a consequence of the Lorentz force resulting from the component of induced electric current due to the magnetic field, which (approximately) acts in the opposite direction to that of the flow velocity. For higher magnetic field strengths, the Lorentz force induces a broadened wake in the vertical plane parallel to the applied magnetic field, resulting in a decrease in the rise velocity

Pattern formation via mixed interactions for coupled Schrodinger equations under Neumann boundary condition

This paper is a sequel to Byeon et al. (J Math Pures Appl 106(9):477-511, 2016) concerning the asymptotic behavior of positive least energy vector solutions to nonlinear Schrodinger systems with mixed couplings that arise from models in Bose-Einstein condensates and nonlinear optics. In [8] we treated homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition. In the current paper we investigate the case of homogeneous Neumann boundary condition. We show that due to mixed attractive and repulsive interactions the least energy solutions exhibit component-wise pattern formations, in particular, co-existence of partial synchronization and segregation. We employ multiple scalings to carry out a refined asymptotic analysis of convergence to a multiple scaled limiting system.

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Bubble dynamics in liquid metals under external magnetic field

In this study, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation was used to derive full understanding of a bubble rising in liquid metals with and without the presence of an external magnetic field. The major aim of the study was to develop new correlations for bubble velocity and bubble deformation in liquid metals. In house code PSI-BOIL has been used for the simulations. Single bubble rising in quiescent liquid is simulated for three different set of materials (Nitrogen+Mercury, Argon+GalnSn, Argon+Steel). The influence of external horizontal magnetic field on bubble dynamics is analyzed, vertical magnetic field is not considered in this study. On overall, the computed results show that horizontal magnetic field reduces bubble rising velocity, straightens the bubble trajectory and enhances bubble interface stability

Fundamental study on microlayer dynamics in nucleate boiling

Dynamics of nucleate boiling are strongly affected by the formation and behaviour of the microlayer, a layer of liquid underneath growing bubbles. As a result of its minute thickness, very high heat fluxes occur within the microlayer and its evaporation contributes significantly to the overall heat transfer. Microlayer formation is, however, not guaranteed and the transition from the contact-line to the microlayer regime of nucleate boiling is not fully understood. The difficulty of experimental investigation of the microlayer and the uncertainties surrounding its formation and subsequent evolution motivate the use of Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) to model its behaviour. In this work, a computational strategy for utilising DNS to model nucleate boiling by resolving explicitly the microlayer is developed. The numerical method is based on the resolution of continuum conservation equations for incompressible two-phase flows in Cartesian and axisymmetric cylindrical coordinates. The phasic interface is tracked by means of the geometric Volume-of-Fluid (VOF) method and the algorithm is applicable both to adiabatic and volatile flows. Online, implicit coupling of the fluid and solid domains for the solution of the conjugate heat-transfer problem is included and closure models for the treatment of the interfacial heat-transfer resistance and the dynamic contact angle are introduced. A rigorous verification and validation exercise is performed to evaluate the efficacy of the numerical algorithm. Subsequently, a theoretical criterion for modelling the transition between contact-line and microlayer regimes is derived, and tested. Very good agreement is found with the reference experimental and simulation data and the predictive power of the criterion is demonstrated with the aid of DNS results. The computational procedure is then validated for simulations of nucleate boiling with resolved microlayer using relevant experimental data recently measured at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; it is shown that the main observed growth features and surface heat-transfer characteristics are well-reproduced using the overall method. A sensitivity study of the dependence of the initial microlayer thickness on the growth conditions is performed and a universal equation describing the thickness distribution is proposed with liquid properties and bubble expansion rate being the governing parameters. Finally, the computational method is extended to coarse-mesh problems by introducing several reduced-order models and the full bubble-growth cycle from nucleation to detachment is simulated. Good agreement with reference measurements is again achieved and the experimental findings regarding the force balance during nucleate boiling are confirmed.LR

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    Get PDF
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
