Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. No full textLAUREA MAGISTRALENel corso dei secoli, la maggior parte dei centri urbani europei si sono rivelati inadatti ai loro ruoli metropolitani principali. Questi centri, rappresentando le arterie principali delle capitali con milioni di passeggeri in transito quotidiano, vedono i loro mercati tradizionalmente centrali trasferiti alle periferie e sostituiti da costruzioni più moderne. La posizione dei mercati nel centro ha portato a enormi difficoltà, spesso trovandosi in piazze piccole, lontane dai nodi di trasporto e circondate da strade strette. Il risultato è un quartiere congestionato, con un mercato angusto privo di spazi dedicati per scaricare, ordinare, pulire e parcheggiare i camion. Questa crescita ininterrotta dei centri urbani ha portato a ciò che viene definito "suburbanizzazione". Le nostre metropoli si trovano circondate da aree periferiche potenzialmente pericolose, caratterizzate da strade insufficienti, mezzi di trasporto inadeguati, servizi amministrativi sovraccarichi e spazi verdi quasi inesistenti. Il progetto di studio si concentra specificamente sui mercati all'ingrosso di Milano, enfatizzando i suoi aspetti ecologici e urbani. Nel corso della storia, il mercato all'ingrosso di Milano è stato trasferito più volte dalla sua area originale, spostandosi gradualmente verso la periferia nel tentativo di trovare il suo posto nella città. Per comprendere meglio la sua situazione, esaminiamo il mercato da vari punti di vista, tenendo conto della sua storia, dei vari spostamenti, dell'integrazione urbana, dello stato attuale e del sistema logistico alla luce dei criteri post-carbonio. Questo approccio consente di cogliere meglio la sua posizione di fronte alle nuove sfide climatiche, energetiche e ambientali, diverse da quelle del passato e che non possono essere affrontate con le stesse risposte di prima. Il progetto è stato sviluppato nell'ambito di un programma di doppio titolo presso il POLITECNICO DI MILANO e l'università ENSA PARIS VAL DE SEINE. Inizialmente, il progetto è iniziato a Parigi nel settembre 2022, durante il quale abbiamo condotto uno studio sul mercato all'ingrosso nel suo stato originale prima del progetto di sviluppo "Foody 2025". L'obiettivo era posizionare il nostro progetto rispetto alla nuova iniziativa, che mirava a demolire una parte significativa del mercato all'ingrosso. Il progetto è stato presentato per la prima volta all'Università di Parigi nel febbraio 2024. A seguito di questa prima presentazione, abbiamo apportato ulteriori modifiche per la presentazione finale al POLITECNICO DI MILANO. Qui abbiamo scelto di concentrarci sul progetto di sviluppo "Foody 2025", che era già in corso con molte strutture già costruite. Il nostro obiettivo era affrontare le sfide poste da queste nuove strutture e integrarle più efficacemente nel loro contesto, sottolineando la sostenibilità. In entrambi i progetti, ci siamo concentrati sull'esaminare e anticipare il futuro del mercato nel contesto della transizione energetica. Ci siamo concentrati sugli aspetti ecologici e urbani, proponendo nuove soluzioni per migliorare la situazione del mercato e promuovere l'integrazione con l'ambiente in modo più ecologico e sostenibile. La domanda fondamentale che sorge riguarda il futuro di questo mercato: come possiamo preservarne la "funzione complessa da metropoli" all'interno dell'ambiente urbano? Come possiamo migliorare la sua integrazione con l'ambiente circostante in modo ecologico per soddisfare le crescenti esigenze ambientali?Over the centuries, most European city centers have become ill-suited to their major metropolitan roles. These centers, representing the main arteries of capitals with millions of passengers transiting daily, see their traditionally centrally located markets moved to the peripheries and replaced by more modern constructions. The location of markets in the center has led to enormous difficulties, often being situated in small squares, far from transport hubs, and surrounded by narrow streets. The result is a congested neighborhood, with a cramped market devoid of dedicated spaces for unloading, sorting, cleaning, and truck parking. This ongoing growth of urban centers has led to what is referred to as "suburbanization." Our metropolises find themselves surrounded by potentially dangerous peripheral areas, characterized by insufficient roadways, inadequate transportation means, overloaded administrative services, and almost nonexistent green spaces. The study project specifically focuses on Milan's wholesale markets emphasizing its ecological and urban aspects. Over history, Milan wholesale market has been relocated several times from its original area, gradually moving towards the periphery in an attempt to find its place within the city. To better understand its situation, we examinate the market from various aspects, taking into account its history, multiple relocations, urban integration, current state, and logistical system in light of post-carbon criteria. This approach allows for a better grasp of its position in the face of new climate, energy, and environmental challenges, which differ from those of the past and cannot be addressed with the same responses as before. The project was developed as part of a double degree program at POLITECNICO DI MILANO and ENSA PARIS VAL DE SEINE university. Initially, the project began in Paris in September 2022, during which we conducted a study of the wholesale market in its original state before the development project "Foody 2025." The objective was to position our project against the new initiative, which aimed to demolish a significant portion of the wholesale market. The project was first presented In Paris University in February 2024. Following this initial submission, we made further modifications for the final presentation at POLITECNICO DI MILANO. Here, we chose to focus on the "Foody 2025" development project, which was already in progress with many structures already built. Our goal was to address the challenges posed by these new structures and integrate them more effectively into their context, emphasizing sustainability. In both projects, our aim was to examine and anticipate the future of the market within the context of the energy transition. We focused on ecological and urban aspects, proposing new solutions to enhance the market's situation and promote integration with its environment in a more ecological and sustainable manner. The fundamental question that arises is about the future of this market: How can we preserve this "metropolis complex function" within the urban environment? How can we enhance its integration with the surroundings in an ecological manner to meet evolving environmental needs
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
