    Not AvailableEfficacy of water conservation measures in coconut plantations to augment ground water resource and coconut yield in the West Coast region was studied by implementing two conservation measures, half moon bund and trench, in coconut gardens. Impact of these conservation measures was studied by monitoring the amount of water conserved by these structures and the improvement in the coconut yield due to these interventions. An attempt was also made to study the contribution of the conserved water in increasing the local ground water resource by monitoring the yield of ‘Surangams’, an indigenous water harnessing structure, that draws water from unconfined aquifer in the hillock where the water conservation measures were undertaken. The conservation measures were taken up in a total area of 17,200 m2 in the coconut gardens of nine farmers and two control plots also was selected having a total area of 4900 m2 each having one Surangam in their respective catchment area. The study revealed that a positive correlation exists between the rainfall and water conserved. However, the amount varied from plot to plot. This variation is mainly due to the non uniformity of the catchment areas, mainly the size of catchment and nature of water conservation structure. Average amount of rain/runoff water collected in plots where a combination of half-moon bund and trench were taken up in the coconut gardens was 51 m3 per year. This was only 30 m3 and 27 m3 when half-moon bund and trench alone was taken up. There was only a meagre improvement in the annual Surangam yield due to the conserved water. However, the improvement was more noticeable (13%) during the non-rainy season, December to May. The plots where two conservation structures, half-moon bund and trench together, were taken up showed 58 per cent increase in the yield of coconut. Coconut yield increased by 37 and 29 per cent where only one conservation structure was taken up, i.e., half-moon bund and trench, respectively. During the same period, average coconut yield in the control plots was decreased marginally from 61 to 56 nuts per palm per year. This shows the possibility of conserving water and enhancing the productivity of coconut in rain fed area by adopting water conservation measures in the hilly region of West Coast. The fact that majority of the coconut cultivation in this region is still under rain fed condition adds to the significance of the result.Not Availabl

    Corporate Governance, Competition and Firm Performance: Evidence from India.

    The aim of this paper is to show the interaction effect of product market competition and corporate governance variables on firm performance. While the linkage between internal governance mechanism and firm performance is well established in several studies, the interaction between internal and external governance mechanism has received scanty attention in emerging market economies. Here we have shown the independent and interaction effect of ownership and competition variable on firm productivity. Contrary to conventional wisdom, we document that competition has in reality become a discernible force in developing economies. The econometric modelling result shows while the standalone effect of ownership variable on productivity is mostly insignificant, there is a strong positive interaction effect with competition variables.

    Low amplitude fatigue performance of sandstone, marble, and granite under high static stress

    Abstract: Fatigue tests under high static pre-stress loads can provide meaningful results to better understand the time-dependent failure characteristics of rock and rock-like materials. However, fatigue tests under high static pre-stress loads are rarely reported in previous literature. In this study, the rock specimens were loaded with a high static pre-stress representing 70% and 80% of the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), and cyclic fatigue loads with a low amplitude (i.e., 5%, 7.5% and 10% of the UCS) were applied. The results demonstrate that the fatigue life decreased as the static pre-stress level or amplitude of fatigue loads increased for different rock types. The high static pre-stress affected the fatigue life greatly when the static pre-stress was larger than the damage stress of rocks in uniaxial compression tests. The accumulative fatigue damage exhibited three stages during the fatigue failure process, i.e., crack initiation, uniform velocity, and acceleration, and the fatigue modulus showed an “S-type” change trend. The lateral and volumetric strains had a much higher sensitivity to the cyclic loading and could be used to predict fatigue failure characteristics. It was observed that volumetric strain εv = 0 is a threshold for microcracks coalescence and is an important value for estimating the fatigue life.     Citations and metrics of journals discontinued from Scopus for publication concerns: the GhoS(t)copus Project

    Background: Scopus is a leading bibliometric database. It contains a large part of the articles cited in peer-reviewed publications . The journals included in Scopus are periodically re-evaluated to ensure they meet indexing criteria and some journals might be discontinued for 'publication concerns'. Previously published articles may remain indexed and can be cited. Their metrics have yet to be studied. This study aimed to evaluate the main features and metrics of journals discontinued from Scopus for publication concerns, before and after their discontinuation, and to determine the extent of predatory journals among the discontinued journals. Methods: We surveyed the list of discontinued journals from Scopus (July 2019). Data regarding metrics, citations and indexing were extracted from Scopus or other scientific databases, for the journals discontinued for publication concerns. Results: A total of 317 journals were evaluated. Ninety-three percent of the journals (294/317) declared they published using an Open Access model. The subject areas with the greatest number of discontinued journals were Medicine (52/317; 16%), Agriculture and Biological Science (34/317; 11%), and Pharmacology, Toxicology and Pharmaceutics (31/317; 10%). The mean number of citations per year after discontinuation was significantly higher than before (median of difference 16.89 citations, p&lt;0.0001), and so was the number of citations per document (median of difference 0.42 citations, p&lt;0.0001). Twenty-two percent (72/317) were included in the Cabell's blacklist. The DOAJ currently included only 9 journals while 61 were previously included and discontinued, most for 'suspected editorial misconduct by the publisher'. Conclusions: Journals discontinued for 'publication concerns' continue to be cited despite discontinuation and predatory behaviour seemed common. These citations may influence scholars' metrics prompting artificial career advancements, bonus systems and promotion. Countermeasures should be taken urgently to ensure the reliability of Scopus metrics for the purpose of scientific assessment of scholarly publishing at both journal- and author-level
