Authorship of Italian medical literature on neuroendocrine neoplasms: any gender gap?

    No full text
Purpose: While males have dominated the physician lines over the last decades the recent female doctors' number increasing might progressively reduce this gender gap. This might be not fully true in the academic/research area. We aimed to analyze the gender distribution of first/senior Italian authors on neuroendocrine neoplasm papers published on peer reviewed journals. Methods: Publications from January 2019 to September 2023 were reviewed; only papers with first and/or senior Italian authors were included. First/senior author gender, type of article, co-authorship with foreign authors were the variable analyzed. Results: 742 papers with Italian first and/or senior authors were retrieved, 449 (60.5%) multicentric, 285 (38.4%) original articles. A female author was first and senior author in 386/742 (52%) and in 228/742 (31%) papers, respectively. 150 (20.2%) papers included foreign coauthors, being an Italian female researcher first author in 50 papers (33%), senior author in 28 (18.6%). The number of Italian female first/senior authors has been increasing over the years (22 in 2019, 113 in 2022; 16 in 2019, 62 in 2022, respectively). The first/senior female authors were mainly Oncologists/Endocrinologists/Pathologists rather than Gastroenterologists/Nuclear Medicine doctors/Surgeons/Radiologists. Conclusion: There has been an increase in the prevalence of female authorship of published research in the neuroendocrine setting over the last 5 years, which partially reflects the current distributions in this field, taking into account that several specialties with different gender distribution are involved. However, senior authorship continues to be primarily men. Efforts should be made to improve proportionate gender representation in both clinical and academic/research setting

Loss of coherency at interphase α/β boundary in Ti-6Al-4V alloys during deformation at 800°C

Ti-6Al-4V is one of the major titanium-based alloy especially for creep purposes. The alloy is generally subjected to high temperature deformation and it is generally used at warm/high temperatures. The alloy (α+β→β)-transus temperature is 995°C, that is, for temperatures within 995°C a mixed α+β phases microstructure characterizes the alloy mechanical behavioryesBelgorod State Universit

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

CHARACTERIZATION OF ENDEMIC SHIGELLA-FLEXNERI STRAINS IN SOMALIA - ANTIMICROBIAL RESISTANCE, PLASMID PROFILES, AND SEROTYPE CORRELATION

One hundred twelve Shigella flexneri strain isolated from children with diarrheal disease in Somalia in 1983, 1984, 1988, and 1989 were analyzed for serotype, plasmid profile, and genetic location of antimicrobial resistance determinants. The prevalent serotypes were 4 (46% of the isolates), 1b (16%), 2a (16%), 3a (12%), and 6 (8%). Each serotype was associated with a characteristic predominant plasmid profile, whereas no specific correlation between antimicrobial resistance patterns and single serotypes was found. All but three of the strains were resistant at least to ampicillin, chloramphenicol, spectinomycin, and tetracycline. Of these resistant strains, 41 were resistant to sulfonamide and streptomycin and 14 were resistant to trimethoprim or trimethoprim and kanamycin. The genes for resistance to ampicillin, chloramphenicol, spectinomycin, and tetracycline formed a linkage group located on the chromosome of the strains of all serotypes. The genes for resistance to sulfonamide and streptomycin were located on a 6.3-kb plasmid in strains of serotypes 1b, 2a, and 4. Conjugative trimethoprim or trimethoprim and kanamycin resistance plasmids with lengths of 80 to 110 kb were present in strains of serotypes 1b, 2a, 3a, and 4. The systematic presence of a chromosomal component in this uncommon genetic plasmid-chromosome configuration may play a role in the emergence of increased genetic stability of resistance patterns in S. flexneri

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
