EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN FOR BENDING STRENGTH ALUMINUM HONEYCOMB STRUCTURE
No full textWOS: 000391292400007In this study, a Taguchi model was formed for the three point bending test behaviors of aluminum honeycomb composite structures. Effect of the three independent variables (cell width, cell height and adhesive) on the dependent variable (bending forces) was determined using mix design L16(4*1 2*2) orthogonal series. As a result of the experiments, bending force values were measured. As a result of Taguchi analysis according to ' better than most' solution approach, bending force value was concluded to be optimum with the use of 58.59 S/N ratio A1 B2 C1 level namely, primary 6.78 mm for cell width and secondary 30 mm for cell height and primary epoxy adhesive. Examining Prospective Middle School Mathematics Teachers' Modelling Skills of Multiplication and Division in Fractions
No full textWOS: 000355068000002Modelling can be considered as an effective way of ensuring permanent learning in the 'Fractions' topic, as well as the other topics of mathematics. When the effect of teacher's knowledge on students' learning is considered, it is important to investigate modelling skills of tomorrow's teachers regarding fractions. Within this context in the present study, prospective middle school mathematics teachers' modelling skills of multiplication and division in fractions were examined. The study was carried out with a total of 104 prospective middle school mathematics teachers who study at the Faculties of Education at two different universities in Turkey. The Modelling Fractions Test (MFT) with six items, three of which were on multiplication and three of which were on division infractions, was used as a data collection tool. In analyzing the data, descriptive statistics was used and items were evaluated one by one. The findings indicated that the participants showed better performance on modelling with operations in multiplication than with the ones in division, created better models regarding operations requiring multiplication and division of a whole number and unit fraction, and also half of the participants answered questions in MFT as completely correct
Novel mutants of the aubergine gene
No full textAubergine is an RNA-binding protein of the Piwi clade, functioning in germline in the piRNA pathway that silences transposons and repetitive sequences. Several mutations of this gene exist, but they mostly result in truncated proteins or correspond to mutations that also affect neighboring genes. We have generated complete aubergine knock-out mutants that do not disrupt the neighboring genes. These novel mutants are characterized by PCR and sequencing. Their nature is confirmed by female sterility and by the presence of crystals in testes, common to the aubergine loss of function mutations. These mutants provide novel and more appropriate tools for the study of the piRNA pathway that controls genome stability

Provenance-based trust for grid computing: Position Paper
No full textCurrent evolutions of Internet technology such as Web Services, ebXML, peer-to-peer and Grid computing all point to the development of large-scale open networks of diverse computing systems interacting with one another to perform tasks. Grid systems (and Web Services) are exemplary in this respect and are perhaps some of the first large-scale open computing systems to see widespread use - making them an important testing ground for problems in trust management which are likely to arise. From this perspective, today's grid architectures suffer from limitations, such as lack of a mechanism to trace results and lack of infrastructure to build up trust networks. These are important concerns in open grids, in which "community resources" are owned and managed by multiple stakeholders, and are dynamically organised in virtual organisations. Provenance enables users to trace how a particular result has been arrived at by identifying the individual services and the aggregation of services that produced such a particular output. Against this background, we present a research agenda to design, conceive and implement an industrial-strength open provenance architecture for grid systems. We motivate its use with three complex grid applications, namely aerospace engineering, organ transplant management and bioinformatics. Industrial-strength provenance support includes a scalable and secure architecture, an open proposal for standardising the protocols and data structures, a set of tools for configuring and using the provenance architecture, an open source reference implementation, and a deployment and validation in industrial context. The provision of such facilities will enrich grid capabilities by including new functionalities required for solving complex problems such as provenance data to provide complete audit trails of process execution and third-party analysis and auditing. As a result, we anticipate that a larger uptake of grid technology is likely to occur, since unprecedented possibilities will be offered to users and will give them a competitive edge
