Validation of a frustrated total internal reflection test bench for tire footprint pressure measurement

    No full text
The development and industrialization of a compact tire footprint pressure distribution test bench is the focus of this work. The test bench work principle is the total internal frustration of light (FTIR) that illuminates a glass sheet from the sides. It allows to obtain a correlation between the brightness of a photographic image of the footprint and the normal pressure applied. In order for the measurements to be independent of the tire compound and the environmental conditions such as ambient light and tire compound, a suitable interface material has to be interposed between the test specimen and the glass surface. The response of the tested materials, i.e. their characteristic pressure - brightness curve, along with their homogeneity, have been measured with purposely designed calibration procedures. Special care has been taken in defining the material deal properties for the application. The selection process led to the selection of a suitable polymeric film. Validation towards the large-scale implementation of the system has been carried out by comparing the results obtained with a well established piezo-resistive sensor, with the aim of evaluating the system’s accuracy and repeatability. The results obtained are very promising: the FTIR system is able to provide pressure distribution measurements with a level of accuracy similar to that the standard piezo-resistive pressure measurement system, but with about forty times the spatial resolution and at a much lower economic costs, both considering initial investment and maintenance. This paper presents new archaeobotanical data from six sites in Sardinia, Italy, dated to the Bronze Age (2000–1100 cal. bc). A total of 978 l of sediment has been sampled and 23,008 items retrieved. The study reveals the presence of cereals (Hordeum vulgare, H. vulgare var. nudum, Triticum monococcum and T. aestivum/durum), legumes (Lathyrus sativus/cicera, Lens culinaris, Pisum sativum and Vicia faba), and wild plants such as Ficus carica, Fragaria sp., Rubus sp., Prunus spinosa, Vitis vinifera, Myrtus communis, Juniperus oxycedrus and Pistacia lentiscus, providing substantial information on the agricultural practices of the first Nuragic communities during the Bronze Age in Sardinia

Experimental Characterization And Model Of A Modular Square-Section TLCD Device

Designing new tall buildings or long span bridges means dealing with problems like comfort and safety evaluation due to wind or earthquake excitation. These studies often leads to different technical solutions able to increase structural damping by means of both active or passive devices; one of these solutions is a passive Tuned Liquid Column Damper (TLCD), reducing the dynamical response of a structure due to external excitation. To correctly design these kind of devices it is not only necessary to tune the TLCD on the first natural frequency/ies of the building, but a numerical tool should be used in order to accurate model loads and system-device interaction and optimize TLCD parameters. The damping effect of a TLCD device is mainly a function of tank shape, volume of water filled in and the loss of load due to the orifice in its horizontal base duct. Because model parameters have non-linear dependence on the TLCD characteristics, they have to be often experimentally estimated. The present work describes the development of a modular square-section TLCD which can be applied on civil structures. The results of the experiments carried out on two prototypes of this particular solution allow to easily determinate all the parameters of the numerical TLCD model, leading to a numerical parametrical design. In particular, all the experimental estimated parameters are reported focusing their influence on TLCD dynamics and model. Besides, in order to show benefits and limits of the proposed model, a complete series of tests has been carried out in order to verify experimental-numerical comparison in real TLCD working conditions, like random imposed motion

This paper present the results of archaeobotanical analysis carried out at two open-air sites dated to the first phase of the Copper Age, “Chalcolithic” (4th to 3rd millennium cal BC) in Sardinia. The sediment was systematically floated, a total of 3142 l was sampled and 4014 charred plant remains were identified. Chalcolithic agriculture in Sardinia was primarily based on the cultivation of Hordeum vulgare, H. vulgare var. nudum and Triticum aestivum/durum. Possible cultivated legumes of Vicia/Lathyrus, Vicia/Pisum and cf. Pisum sativum were identified. Linum sp. was also present, which may have been cultivated and exploited in Sardinia by the Chalcolithic community. The diet of the Chalcolithic community was complemented by the consumption of edible fruits such as Ficus carica, Sambucus sp. and Vitis vinifera subsp. sylvestris. Typical Mediterranean shrubs such as Pistacia lentiscus, Juniperus sp., Cistus sp., Malva sp. and Thymelaea hirsuta were also found
