Chester Page Collection
No full textPianist and art connoisseur, Chester Page (1929-) was a close confidant to Modernist American author, Djuna Barnes (1892-1982) during the final decade of her life, as well as a friend to several other major literary figures such as Marianne Moore (1887-1972), Bryher (1894-1983), and Elizabeth Bishop (1911-1979). Barnes and Page shared a mutual friendship with Moore. In the spring of 1970 Page wrote to Barnes to introduce himself and to offer his assistance. He was invited to tea at Barnes's apartment at 5 Patchin Place in New York City on 19 May 1970, and from that moment forward, enjoyed a close friendship with the author until her death. After Barnes's death on 18 June 1982, Page became an invaluable source of information on the reclusive author during her final days. He had managed a closeness which Barnes bestowed on a select few. The Chester Page Collection contains correspondence between Barnes and several friends and literary figures and some epemera collected by Page. The collection spans the period 1933 to 1992. Correspondence with Louise Crane (1913-1997) dating between 1970 and 1973 constitutes the bulk of the collection

Continuous metadata flows for distributed multimedia
No full textThe practical use of temporal multimedia has increased markedly in recent years as enabling technologies for the distribution and streaming of media have become available. As a part of this trend, hypermedia systems and models have adapted accordingly to incorporate such distributed multimedia for presentation. Structured interpretation of information has long been a fundamental feature of both open hypermedia systems and knowledge systems. Metadata, in its many forms, has become the cornerstone for providing this structured knowledge above and beyond basic data and information. This thesis presents the rationale and requirements for continuous metadata, which supports the metadata accompanying distributed multimedia throughout the lifecycle of streamed media, from generation, through distribution, to presentation. Throughout this process it is the temporal and continuous nature of the metadata which is paramount. A conceptual framework for continuous metadata is proposed to encapsulate these principles and ideas. Continuous metadata and the associated framework enable the development, in particular, of real-time, collaborative, semantically enriched distributed multimedia applications. Experience building one such system using continuous metadata is evaluated within the framework. An ontology is developed for the system to enable the collation, distribution, and presentation of structure aiding navigation of multimedia, and it is shown how continuous metadata utilising the ontology can be distributed using multicas
CR1 Knops blood group alleles are not associated with severe malaria in the Gambia
No full textThe Knops blood group antigen erythrocyte polymorphisms have been associated with reduced falciparum malaria-based in vitro rosette formation (putative malaria virulence factor). Having previously identified single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the human complement receptor 1 (CR1/CD35) gene underlying the Knops antithetical antigens Sl1/Sl2 and McC(a)/McC(b), we have now performed genotype comparisons to test associations between these two molecular variants and severe malaria in West African children living in the Gambia. While SNPs associated with Sl:2 and McC(b+) were equally distributed among malaria-infected children with severe malaria and control children not infected with malaria parasites, high allele frequencies for Sl 2 (0.800, 1,365/1,706) and McC(b) (0.385, 658/1706) were observed. Further, when compared to the Sl 1/McC(a) allele observed in all populations, the African Sl 2/McC(b) allele appears to have evolved as a result of positive selection (modified Nei-Gojobori test Ka-Ks/s.e.=1.77, P-valu
A report on the Red Funnel FerryBox 2004 - an overview of the data obtained, improvements and calibration procedures
No full textThis report aims to provide a complete record of the work done as part of the ‘FerryBox’ activities on the Red Funnel Ltd ‘Red Falcon’ ferry in Southampton Water and the Solent in 2004. The procedures, hardware and software used are described and listed in detail. The results are summarised. Details are provided of the content and location of all of the data files produced, both observational data and data collected to calibrate the instruments. The collection of high quality, long term data in as many environments as possible is required to investigate the interplay of different factors affecting phytoplankton bloom development. With this in mind the Southampton Water and Solent estuarine system has been intensively monitored over the last 6 years using the FerryBox system. The ferry travels the length of the estuary up to 16 times a day. The ‘FerryBox’ suite of sensors measurestemperature, salinity, fluorescence and turbidity. These data are collected with at a frequency of 1Hz and are merged with position data, collected using a GPS system.In 2004 the FerryBox methods were improved to reduce the affects of bio fouling on the sensors. The sensors were systematically cleaned and the sensors calibrated during weekly ferry crossings. Calibrations of the turbidity and fluorescence sensors were monitored using materials suspended in solid Perspex blocks. The sensors were found to be stable and a high quality dataset was produced. Variations were seen in the ratio of fluorescence to chlorophyll throughout the estuary and with the time of year. Using the ‘FerryBox’ dataset the occurrence of phytoplankton blooms has been related to environmental factors such as light and to the tides. Such continuous monitoring allows us to pinpoint the timings of phytoplankton bloom initiation and duration. In 2004 a series of regular peaks influorescence occurred throughout the summer months. The detailed data from the FerryBox allows the occurrence of these blooms to be correlated with changes in the tidal energy of the system, light and fresh water run off

The contribution of symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), health anxiety and intolerance of uncertainty to distress in Ménière's disease
No full textThis study assessed whether symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), health anxiety, and intolerance of uncertainty were associated with distress in members of the Ménière's Society (n = 800), and compared the extent of anxiety, depression, intolerance of uncertainty and health anxiety with a healthy control group (n = 484). PTSD symptoms were associated with anxiety, depression, and handicap. Health anxiety was associated with anxiety and depression. Intolerance of uncertainty was directly associated with anxiety; its association with depression and handicap was mediated by PTSD symptoms. The Ménière's group reported more anxiety, depression, and health anxiety than the control group, but were not more intolerant of uncertainty. More than half of the Ménière's group reported experiencing partial or full PTSD symptoms. As PTSD, health anxiety and intolerance of uncertainty are modifiable with psychological treatment, we advise that clinicians should screen patients with Ménière's disease who are particularly distressed
