Captain William Patrick (W. P.) Lay, the son of Cummins Lay, was born in Cherokee County in 1853. He and his parents moved to Gadsden in 1870, where he met and married Laura Hollingsworth, the daughter of Major W. P. Hollingsworth Lay died at his home on Forrest Avenue on November 21, 1940, at 87 years of age (The History of Etowah County, p. 108, fn 5) Lay, in 1903, constructed his own hydroelectric plant on Big Wills Creek, and succeeded in carrying power a distance of five to 10 miles. … Failing to convince government engineers of the feasibility of his scheme, lay turned to private capital for funds to build the proper height dams. It was for this reason that the Alabama Power Company was organized by Lay, his son, Earl, and Oliver R. Hood in Gadsden. Lay himself provided the necessary capital of $5,000. Nurse led versus lay educators support for those with asthma in primary care: a costing study

    No full text

Background - Regular review and support for asthma self-management is promoted in guidelines. A randomised controlled trial suggested that unscheduled health care usage was similar when patients were offered self management support by a lay-trainer or practice nurses.

Methods - Following the RCT, a costing study was undertaken using the trial data to account for the cost of delivery of the service under both strategies and the resulting impact on unscheduled healthcare (measure of effectiveness) in this trial.

Results - One year data (n = 418) showed that 29% (61/205) of the nurse group required unscheduled healthcare (177 events) compared with 30.5% (65/213) for lay-trainers (178 events).

The training costs for the lay-trainers were greater than nurses (£36 versus £18 respectively per patient, p<0.001), however, the consultation cost for lay-trainers were lower than nurses (£6 per patient versus £24, p<0.001). If the cost of unscheduled healthcare are accounted for then the costs of nurses is £161, and £135 for lay-trainers (mean difference £25, [95% CI = −£97, £149, p = 0.681]). The total costs (delivery and unscheduled healthcare) were £202 per patient for nurses versus £178 for lay-trainers, (mean difference £24, [95%CI = −£100, £147, p = 0.707]).

Conclusions - There were no significant differences in the cost of training and healthcare delivery between nurse and lay trainers, and no significant difference in the cost of unscheduled health care use.</p&gt

Adam Żydowski’s Remarks on the Competence of Lay and Ecclesiastical Courts in Witchcraft Cases

    No full text
Witchcraft cases in Poland (before partitions) have been examined by historians since olden times. Among the issues discussed in this matter there was the Act of the Polish Sejm of 1543, according to which witchcraft cases should be in the competence of ecclesiastical courts. Researchers have been interpreting the meaning of this Act in a very different way. According to one group, the Act excluded the competence of lay courts in witchcraft cases totally. Another group claimed that the lay court could examine a case if there was evidence of damage caused by a witch. In practice these cases were examined by the lay courts (especially town courts). It has been pointed out recently that the 1543 Act was only supposed to remain in force for one year, so there was no legal ground to undermine the competence of lay courts in witchcraft cases. It seems that one cannot agree with such a simple solution. Research on practice of the old courts and the works of the 17th century lawyer Adam Żydowski, presents a viewpoint contrary to this. Żydowski, among other issues, discusses the competence of lay and ecclesiastical courts in witchcraft cases and illustrates their respective abilities. The author himself – according to his concept of research – does not present clear opinion. Notwithstanding, his work reveals that the 1543 Act was included in 17th century treatises as still being in power. Probably the clause which limited the act to only one year had been [email protected] ŚląskiControversiae causarum selectiorum iuris Adami a Żydowo Żydowski, decriptae per Christophorum [et Stanislaum] de Siarczane Góry Rynth[y] Anno Domini 1691mo – rkps w Bibliotece Jagiellońskiej w Krakowie, sygn. 8074 III.Birkowski F., Kazania o naukach tajemnych, oprac. The psychological-type profile of lay church leaders in Australia

    No full text
A sample of 845 lay church leaders (444 women and 401 men) from a range of 24 different denominations and movements (including house churches and independent churches) completed the Francis Psychological-Type Scales within the context of the 2006 Australian National Church Life Survey. The psychological-type profiles of these lay church leaders were almost identical to the type profiles of 1527 Australian churchgoers (936 women and 591 men) published in an earlier study by Robbins and Francis. The predominant types among female lay church leaders were ISFJ (21%), ESFJ (21%), and ISTJ (18%). The predominant types among male lay church leaders were ISTJ (28%), ISFJ (17%), ESTJ (13%), and ESFJ (12%). The SJ temperament accounted for 67% of the female lay church leaders and for 70% of the male lay church leaders. The strengths and weaknesses of the SJ leadership style are discussed

Zmiany zasobow retencji glebowej zdrenowanych gruntow ornych w Sudetach Srodkowych

The project presents research involving an analysis and evaluation of water supply of poorly permeable soils in drained arable lands. The analysis dealt with research conducted in 2003–2005 at similar meteorological conditions in an agricultural submountain catchment area situated in Central Sudety. In particular, the analysis concerned water and air properties of examined deposits with regard to their water-retention. The measurements of moisture density of soil profi les and calculated water supplies in layers 1–100 cm showed a crosssection of reserves of soil retention. This depended on the depth and lay of the land as well as drainage conditions. In the lower drainage area at the foot of the slope there was a notably higher level of groundwater than in other places on the slope. In areas where rainfall was the exclusive source of groundwater the measured water-supplies were lower than in multi-sourced drainage areas. The amount of measured supplies for the vegetation period spanning the whole research time was not lower than 70% of the fi eld-water capacity.Badania przedstawione w pracy obejmujące analizę i ocenę gospodarki wodnej gleb słabo przepuszczalnych zdrenowanych gruntów ornych.
