    Konstruktionsfamilien im Deutschen

    No full text

Cool, cooler, Clooney – A corpus-based and relevance-theoretic analysis of the superlative heading construction in German

This article focuses on the intensifying schematic construction [[adj1positive] [adj1comparative] [NP]] that is strongly related to headings, as our corpus analysis reveals. A characteristic of the construction is that, although it structurally exhibits the paradigm of the German adjective comparison, it has a slot for a noun phrase in the third position, where an adjective in the superlative form would normally occur (e. g., Stark, stärker, Dante, ‘Strong, stronger, Dante’). We analyze this construction, which we refer to as a “superlative heading”, from syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic perspectives, using 2,835 instances (tokens) from the German Reference Corpus. To explain the formal and semantic peculiarities of the construction, we consider the principle of coercion and approaches to linguistic creativity. The pragmatic effects of the construction as a genre-specific pattern are discussed from a relevance-theoretic perspective. The paper thus combines construction grammar and relevance theory.

Families of constructions in German. A corpus-based study of constructional phrasemes with the pattern [XNP attribute]

This paper focuses on morphosyntactically and semanticallypragmatically similar constructional phrasemes (Dobrovolʼskij 2011) that can be described as a family of constructions within the framework of Construction Grammar. These are constructional phrasemes in which a lexically open noun phrase is specified by a lexically fixed postponed attribute. The constructions have the syntactic pattern [XNP attribute] and share more or less the same semantics and pragmatics. As an example, three members of the family are characterized by their formal structure and their semantic-pragmatic properties ([XNPpur], [XNP par excellence], [XNP wie er/sie/es im Buche steht]). The aim is to describe these similar constructions with regard to their network-like relationships. The article aims to determine usage restrictions and preferred fillers on the basis of the German Reference Corpus (DeReKo) and with the help of the tool Lexical Pattern Analyzer (lexpan), which permits an automatic quantification of the lexical fillers

Antecedents and anti-counterfeiting tactics that influence consumer complicity in emerging markets

A web-based survey of 2,004 consumers near-equally sampled from Brazil, Russia, India, China (BRIC), and the U.S. explored the consumers’ sense of an hedonic shopping experience and attitudes toward counterfeits (ethical concern and perceived quality) regarding two counterfeit products (movies and pharmaceuticals), four anti-counterfeiting actions, and respondents’ complicity in each BRIC marketplace. Consumer complicity – a consumer's willingness to obtain, share, or use counterfeit products – was predicted by the consumers' hedonic shopping experience and preconceived attitudes toward counterfeits (lack of ethical concern and perceived high product quality) across all country markets. A complicity index encompassing multiple measures of willingness to engage in counterfeit trade was used to identify significant country effects for four types of anti-counterfeiting actions

    What influences rampant movie piracy?

This study develops a model of consumer complicity with counterfeit and pirated movies to better understand what motivates this type of illicit consumer behavior; specifically whether personal values (idealism, relativism), ethical concern, collectivism, hedonic shopping experience, and perceived quality are plausible predictors of this illicit consumption behavior. We selected movies as the product to examine since the industry has a high incidence of lost sales due to counterfeits in physical markets (e.g., DVDs) and piracy by way of digital formats (e.g., illegal downloading and/or video streaming). Using a web-based survey, over 1,500 consumers from Brazil, China, India, Russia, and the U.S. support the model and provide a means to identify a complicit consumer across country markets. The consumers’ lack of ethical concern and the favorable hedonic shopping experience in both physical and virtual markets are the strongest predictors of consumer complicity to obtain illicit movies. Implications for managers are to discourage complicity through demarketing campaigns that defray the hedonic shopping stimulus, foster a credible ethical concern, and create a negative association of inferior quality towards the fake movies

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
