[MD] ### Prefatory Note #### Sarah McNamer, Georgetown University The text presented here is adapted from Francesco Sarri’s edition, _Le ‘Meditazioni della vita di Cristo’ di un frate minore del secolo XIV_ (Milan: Vita e pensiero, 1933). It is reproduced here in Open Access form with kind permission from the publisher, Vita e pensiero, Milan. I wish to thank Aurelio Mottolo, editorial director at Vita e pensiero, for granting such permission; and I am grateful to the library staff at Lauinger Library, especially Suzanne Chase, Meg Oakley, and Salwa Ismail, for their part in making this rare volume available to a wider community. Why is it important to present an Open Access adaptation of Sarri’s 1933 edition at this time? This requires a word of explanation. The Italian versions of the popular and influential _Meditazioni della vita di Cristo (Meditations on the Life of Christ)_ have become a subject of keen interest in recent years. It had long been thought that the long Latin version of the _Meditations,_ the pseudo-Bonaventuran _Meditationes vitae Christi,_ was the original form of the work. Recently this has been called into question. Could the Italian versions have preceded the Latin? And if so, which of the Italian versions was composed first? In the introduction to my critical edition and translation, _Meditations on the Life of Christ: The Short Italian Text_ (Notre Dame, IN: University of Notre Dame Press, 2018), I make the case that the text edited in that volume, the _testo breve,_ was composed by Author A, possibly a Poor Clare, between about 1300 and 1325, and that it represents the core, original form of the MVC. Surviving in a single manuscript copy, Oxford, Bodleian Library Canonici Italian 174, the _testo breve_ consists of a prologue and 30 chapters centering on the Infancy and Passion of Christ; the Public Ministry is not treated. In the textual history I have reconstructed (McNamer, _Meditations,_ xxxiii-xciv), I have hypothesized that the _testo breve_ was then taken up, revised, “corrected,” expanded, and put into circulation in three successively longer versions: the Italian _testo minore,_ consisting of a prologue and ca. 41 chapters, still focusing on the Infancy and Passion; the Italian _testo maggiore,_ consisting of a prologue and ca. 96 chapters, now expanded greatly to include the Public Ministry, thereby offering a “complete” set of meditations on the life of Christ; and finally, the long Latin text, translated from the Italian _testo maggiore_ and expanded slightly, to ca. 100 chapters. I have argued that this second campaign of expansion, revision, and translation into Latin was carried out not by Author A but by a different author, Author B, an anonymous Franciscan friar, between about 1325 and 1340 (McNamer, _Meditations,_ xcv-cxlviii). The hypothesis I have put forward in _Meditations on the Life of Christ: The Short Italian Text_ will require evaluation by the scholarly community. In particular, detailed comparisons between the _testo breve_ and the _testo minore_ will be essential. I have commented on many differences between the two versions in the notes to _Meditations on the Life of Christ,_ but this kind of close comparative work merits independent assessment by others. The major claims I have made, that the _testo breve_ preceded the _testo minore_ and that the _testo minore_ represents an adaptation and expansion of the _testo breve_ by a redactor (Author B), not the original author (Author A), can best be tested by placing the two full texts, the _testo breve_ and the _testo minore,_ side by side. At present, however, there is no version of the _testo minore_ in print, nor has a critical edition of the _testo minore_ ever been produced. Several editions of the _testo minore_ based on single manuscripts were published in the nineteenth century, including Giuseppe Donadelli’s _Meditazioni dell vita di Gesù Cristo: Testo inedito del buon secolo della lingua_ (Milan, 1823), Ottavio Gigli’s _Le meditazioni di S. Bonaventura sulla vita di Gesù Cristo_ (Rome, 1847), and Adamo Rossi’s edition of a manuscript from Perugia, Rome, Biblioteca Angelica MS 2213, in _Quattordici scritture italiane_ (Perugia, 1856). None of the manuscripts has any particular textual authority, however; nor do their editors offer collations with other manuscripts. What I present here, then, in order to facilitate further work on the MVC’s textual history and to allow others to test the claims I have made in _Meditations on the Life of Christ: The Short Italian Text,_ is a version of the _testo minore_ adapted from Francesco Sarri’s 1933 edition, _Le ‘Meditazioni della vita di Cristo’ di un frate minore del secolo XIV_ (Milan: Vita e pensiero, 1933). It must be said that Sarri’s edition as a whole is, as he recognized, eccentric: as Sarri explains in his Introduction, which is reproduced here, he wished to present an edition of the “complete” life of Christ---containing the Infancy, Public Ministry, and Passion---from the Italian manuscripts. But he recognized that the better manuscripts of the Infancy and Passion sections were clearly those belonging to the _testo minore_ category, not the surviving manuscripts or printed version of the _testo maggiore._ So he chose to create a serviceable, composite edition, one that yoked two disparate recensions together. For the Infancy and Passion sections, he used the _testo minore_ recension, relying on Florence, Biblioteca Riccardiana MS 1419 as his base text but occasionally noting alternative readings from five additional manuscripts of the _testo minore_ (Biblioteca Riccardiana MSS 1286, 1348, 1358, 1404, 1675). For the Public Ministry section (chapters 17-65) he inserted the chapters from Sorio’s edition of the _testo maggiore_ (see ‘Nota Critica,’ esp. xxviii). What I present here are the chapters from Sarri’s edition of the _testo minore._ I have removed here the chapters inserted by Sarri from the Sorio edition of the _testo maggiore;_ and I have renumbered the chapters to reflect the chapters as configured in Sarri’s base manuscript. In effect, then, I have restored here the integrity of the _testo minore_ recension, as represented by Florence, Biblioteca Riccardiana MS 1419, while retaining Sarri’s admittedly imperfect, but nonetheless valuable effort to compare MS 1419 to five other _testo minore_ manuscripts. Sarri himself described his work as merely a “step towards” a critical edition (xxx). Until a critical edition of the _testo minore_ is available, Sarri’s edition of the _testo minore,_ as adapted here, is the most recent and reliable edition of the _testo minore._ It should be noted that Sarri’s introduction, which assumes that the Italian versions are _volgarizzamenti_ and that the original version of the MVC was composed in Latin by Johannes de Caulibus, reflects scholarship of the 1930s. For a thorough review of the scholarship and current debates on the original language, textual history, authorship, and date of the MVC, see McNamer, _Meditations on the Life of Christ._ To access this edition, please download the PDF or click on the Bookview icon below

Combining the Non-Surgical Treatment with Extracts of Croton Lechleri and Myrciaria Dubia to Solve Gingival Cleft

Nowadays, the “pink” aesthetic possesses a significant role in the success of a dental treatment. Extended or small recessions should be solved to achieve harmony between tooth and gingival tissue. Gingival cleft (GC) is a condition that can lead to unpleasant gingival recession in the anterior area. The etiology of GC is still not clear and is often resolved using surgical treatments that, although minimal, are still interventions which can cause risks and discomfort to the patient. Therefore, this case report aims to propose a non-invasive treatment for GC, consisting of a combination of a non-surgical technique with herbal extracts therapy. A non-smoker, healthy patient was subjected to professional oral hygiene treatment supported by Croton Lechleri resin application and at-home supplementation with natural vitamin C (Myrciaria Dubia). The patient entirely followed the instructions and, after 12 months, the GC almost disappeared. In spite of its limitations, since further clinical cases are needed, the proposed non-surgical periodontal technique combined with herbal extracts therapy can represent a promising way to solve or at least reduce GC, before considering surgical treatment

Medicinal and aromatic plants represent an outstanding source of green active ingredients for a broad range of real-world applications. In the present study, we investigated the insecticidal potential of the essential oils obtained from three medicinal and aromatic plants of economic importance in Algeria, Artemisia campestris, Pulicaria arabica, and Saccocalyx satureioides. Gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was used to study the essential oil chemical compositions. The three essential oils were tested against a mosquito vectoring filariasis and arboviruses, i.e., Culex quinquefasciatus, a fly pest acting also as pathogens vector, Musca domestica, and an agricultural moth pest, i.e., Spodoptera littoralis, using WHO and topical application methods, respectively. The essential oil from A. campestris, containing β-pinene (15.2%), α-pinene (11.2%), myrcene (10.3%), germacrene D (9.0%) (Z)-β-ocimene (8.1%) and γ-curcumene (6.4%), showed remarkable toxicity against C. quinquefasciatus (LC50 of 45.8 mg L-1) and moderate effects (LD50 of 99.8 μg adult-1) against M. domestica. Those from P. arabica and S. satureioides, containing epi-α-cadinol (23.9%), δ-cadinene (21.1%), α-cadinol (19.8%) and germacrene D-4-ol (8.4%), and thymol (25.6%), α-terpineol (24.6%), borneol (17.4%) and p-cymene (11.4%), respectively, were more active on S. littoralis showing LD50 values of 68.9 and 61.2 μg larva-1, respectively. Based on our results, the essential oil from A. campestris may be further considered a candidate ingredient for developing botanical larvicides

State Estimation of Active Distribution Networks: Comparison Between WLS and Iterated Kalman-Filter Algorithm Integrating PMUs

    No full text
One of the challenging tasks related to the realtime control of Active Distribution Networks (ADNs) is represented by the development of fast (i.e. sub-second) state estimation (SE) processes. As known, the problem of SE of power networks links the measurements performed in the network with a set of non-linear equations representing the links between the network node voltage phasors (i.e. the system states) and measured quantities. The calculation of these voltages is accomplished by the solution of a minimization problem by using, for instance, Weighted Least Squares (WLS) or Kalman filter (KF) methods. The availability of phasor measurement units (PMUs), characterized by high accuracy and able to directly measure node voltage phasors, allows, in principle, a simplification of the SE problem. Within this framework, the paper has two aims. The first is to propose a procedure based on the use of the Iterated KF (IKF) aiming at making achievable, in a straightforward manner, the SE of ADNs integrating PMU measurements. The second goal is to present a sensitivity analysis of the performances of WLS vs IKF methods as a function of the measurements and process covariance matrices.DES
