Mobbing, psychological violence at work: characteristics and health effects. A study in the clinical field. BACKGROUND There is an increasing interest for studies, prevention and management of mobbing in the area of occupational psychosocial risks. OBJECTIVES To describe mobbing and health effects by analysis of the cases examined from 1997 to 2003 at the Department of Occupational Health ( Clinica del Lavoro Luigi Devoto in Milan). METHODS 226 clinical records of subjects, reporting a mobbing situation at the medical examination, were selected out of 2455 patients examined for stress-related disorders. RESULTS Women s percentage (53,1%) is higher than men s (46,9%) with a prevailing age range 35-54. There is a great variety of jobs, especially white-collars and workers of large service companies. In one third of cases, mobbing occurred within 4 years from employment and mostly during company reorganization and management changes. The most frequent negative acts include social isolation and demotion. The most frequent symptoms are exhaustion, sleep, mood and sexual disorders. The number of symptoms is not related to mobbing duration but to number and frequency of negative actions. Personality profiles are examined and the role of personality is discussed. Occupational health physicians play an essential role in primary prevention (information on occupational risks) and in early diagnosis and rehabilitation

Changes at workplace as antecedents of bullying

Bullying is a complex and multi-causal phenomenon that cannot be explained by one single factor, but rather by an interaction of different factors; it is a process that typically begins with indirect actions and degenerate in direct and aggressive behaviours (Einarsen et al., 2003). Usually the victims are not immediately aware of the real nature of the situation but, after a variable amount of time, the very moment of the onset is recognised. The aim of the study, currently in progress, is to identify the main antecedents of bullying as reported by a sample of patients victims of bullying examined at the Medical Centre for Occupational Stress and Harassment of “Clinica del Lavoro Luigi Devoto” (Milan) for work-related psychiatric disorders. The patients (N=77) were subjected to a three-day protocol. Qualitative analysis of occupational history, as collected by an occupational physician and a psychologist, was conducted. The results show that the most frequent antecedents of bullying are restructuring (23.4%) (new management, new bosses, new colleagues and proprietor) and the change of one or more superiors (23.4%), without restructuring. 14.3% of the subjects stated that problems began when they requested the respect for their rights or posed other demands (a promotion, a transfer etc.). 10.4% of the subjects reported that their problem began soon after their employment in a new workplace. 9.1% said that problems occurred when they were moved to a new office. Only 5.2% affirmed having been discriminated after refusing sexual proposals or when they reported being affected by a disease. These results show that the change, of different type, at the workplace is a critical factor and that, although per se insufficient, can trigger the bullying process. This is the reason why the management of change seems to be a very important intervention for preventing bullying

Il caregiver in oncologia : tra ruolo e bisogni

Cancer is not only an individual problem, but it affects the entire family, disrupting relationships, daily routines and social relations. In our country, assistance to cancer patients is mostly the responsibility of the family and in particular, of those who are in charge with administering the treatment: the caregivers. Based upon scientific research, the present paper is aimed at focusing attention to caregivers, going through their responsibilities during the different stages of the disease and the possible outcomes on their well-being and quality of life. The caregiver meets the patient’s requirements mainly in two respects: medical nursing care and emotional well-being. Research demonstrated the outcomes on the psychological and physical balances and on the daily activities of the family as well as the professional and social areas. The caregiver has a variety of practical and emotional needs. In particular one need goes throughout all the stages of the disease: a clear and correct communication, that could improve the relationships between patient, caregiver and physician, providing exhaustive and comprehensible information about all the aspects of the disease. The caregiver, in fact, takes on responsibilities that are physically and emotionally demanding, considering that he/she does not have any specialisation for this role. On this basis, more information is needed about the disease and more psychological support, with special reference to emotional aspects

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    koamabayili/VECTRON-author-checklist: VECTRON author checklist

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
