    Unmet therapeutic, educational and scientific needs in parathyroid disorders : consensus statement from the first European Society of Endocrinology Workshop (PARAT)

    Abstract: PARAT, a new European Society of Endocrinology program, aims to identify unmet scientific and educational needs of parathyroid disorders, such as primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT), including parathyroid cancer (PC), and hypoparathyroidism (HypoPT). The discussions and consensus statements from the first PARAT workshop (September 2018) are reviewed. PHPT has a high prevalence in Western communities, yet evidence is sparse concerning the natural history and whether morbidity and long-term outcomes are related to hypercalcemia or plasma PTH concentrations or both. Cardiovascular mortality and prevalence of low energy fractures are increased, whereas quality of life is decreased, although their reversibility by treatment of PHPT has not been convincingly demonstrated. PC is a rare cause of PHPT, with increasing incidence, and international collaborative studies are required to advance knowledge of the genetic mechanisms, biomarkers for disease activity and optimal treatments. For example, similar to 20% of PCs demonstrate high mutational burden, and identifying targetable DNA variations, gene amplifications and gene fusions may facilitate personalized care, such as different forms of immunotherapy or targeted therapy. HypoPT, a designated orphan disease, is associated with a high risk of symptoms and complications. Most cases are secondary to neck surgery. However, there is a need to better understand the relation between disease biomarkers and intellectual function and to establish the role of PTH in target tissues, as these may facilitate the appropriate use of PTH substitution therapy. Management of parathyroid disorders is challenging, and PARAT has highlighted the need for international transdisciplinary scientific and educational studies in advancing in this field

    Potencijalne probiotičke bakterije Lactobacillus buchneri 4t1, Lactobacillus paraplantarum SF9B i Lactobacillus sucicola BGG07-28 te probiotički soj Lactobacillus helveticus M92 imaju na svojoj površini S-proteine čija uloga još nije u potpunosti razjašnjena. S obzirom da mnoga probiotička svojstva bakterija ovise o njihovim površinskim karakteristikama, cilj ovog rada je ispitati ulogu S-proteina u odabranim probiotičkim svojstvima: u preživljavanju probiotičkih bakterijskih stanica u gastrointestinalnom traktu, u zaštiti stanica tijekom procesa liofilizacije te u autoagregaciji, kao preduvjetu za uspješnu adheziju probiotičkih bakterijskih stanica na crijevne epitelne stanice, odnosno u koagregaciji s patogenim bakterijama, za njihovu kompetitivnu ekskluziju. Sva su istraživanja provedena na odabranim Lactobacillus sojevima koji na svojoj površini imaju S-proteine te sa istim sojevima kojima su S-proteini prethodno uklonjeni radi istraživvanja funkcije S-proteina u ispitivanim probiotičkim svojstvima. Rezultati su pokazali da S-proteini imaju značajnu zaštitnu ulogu u preživljavanju stanica u simuliranim uvjetima gastrointestinalnog sustava i tijekom liofilizacije, s obzirom na to da je nakon navedenih procesa smrtnost stanica kod kojih su bili prisutni S-proteini bila puno manja nego kod stanica kojima su S-proteini uklonjeni. S-proteini također imaju značajnu ulogu u uspješnoj autoagregaciji ispitivanih sojeva, u njihovoj koagregaciji sa srodnim bakterijama mliječne kiseline, kao i u koagregaciji s patogenom bakterijom Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium.Potential probiotic bacteria Lactobacillus buchneri 4t1, Lactobacillus paraplantarum SF9B, Lactobacillus sucicola BGG07-28 and the probiotic strain Lactobacillus helveticus M92 have on their surface the S-protein whose role is not yet fully understood. Since many properties of probiotic bacteria depend on their surface properties, the aim of this thesis is to examine the role of S-protein in selected probiotic properties: the survival of probiotic bacterial cells in the gastrointestinal tract, protection of the cells during lyophilization process and the autoaggregation, as the requirement for successful probiotic bacterial cell adhesion to intestinal epithelial cells, and in coaggregation with pathogenic bacteria, for their competitive exclusion. All the studies were conducted in selected Lactobacillus strains with the S-protein on its surface and with the same strains which are the S-proteins first removed, which allows the observation of S-protein in the probiotic properties. The results showed that S-proteins have an important protective role in cell survival in simulated gastrointestinal conditions and during lyophilization, considering that after the above mentioned process death in cells which S-proteins were present was much lower than in cells in which the S-proteins have been removed. S-proteins also play a significant role in the successful autoaggregation strains tested, in their coaggregation with related lactic acid bacteria, as well as in coaggregation with pathogenic bacteria Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium

    U radu su analizirani zahtjevi kojima ulja za brodske motore moraju udovoljiti. Posebna se pozornost posvetila, ne samo općenitim zahtjevima kojima trebaju udovoljiti sva industrijska ulja, već i specifičnim zahtjevima zbog korištenja ulja u uvjetima sagorijevanja teških ostatnih goriva s povećanim udjelom sumpora i vanadija. Dana je i ekonomska usporedba troškova plovidbe na destilatno i na ostatno gorivo. Razrađen je i osnovni princip rada sustava za podmazivanje, a priložena je i shema sustava za podmazivanje s opisom i određivanjem bitnih karakteristika pojedinih komponenti. Prikazana su brojna poboljšanja konstrukcije motora koja su potaknuta željom za usavršavanjem procesa izgaranja i potpomaganja sustava podmazivanja.     In this paper, we investigate the feasibility of SiO2/Al2O3 stack tunnel dielectric for future Flash memory generations using statistical leakage current simulations. We show that the statistical Monte Carlo (MC) simulator we employed reproduces accurately leakage currents measured on SiO2/Al2O3 dielectric capacitors. Exploiting its statistical capabilities, we calculate leakage current distributions in Flash memory retention conditions. We show that the high defectiveness of AI2O3 stacks strongly reduces the potential improvement of Flash retention due to the introduction of AI2O3 tunnel dielectric

    We present here a statistical Monte Carlo (MC) simulator modeling leakage currents across SiO2/high-kappa dielectric stacks. We show that simulations accurately reproduce experimental currents measured at various temperatures on capacitors with different high-k dielectric stacks. We exploit statistical simulations to investigate the impact of high-kappapsilas traps on leakage current distribution for flash memory applications. We demonstrate that the high defectiveness typical of high-k materials strongly reduces the potential improvement due to the introduction of band-gap engineered high-kappa tunnel dielectric stacks.     Can inter-firm networks alleviate supply chain risks within global food supply chains?

    The food supply chain is truly a global supply chain wherein finished products and raw materials are transported across continents to fulfil requirements of consumers. The networks of supply encompass different languages, cultural systems, regulations etc. The entire farmer to end user cycle spans multiple risks and uncertainties which can manifest themselves in form of financial losses to human fatalities. In the past there have been instances of product recalls and food contamination which have had serious consequences as witnessed by the China milk scare, the Sudan1 dye in Worcester sauce and the Tomato salsa recall amongst others. This paper presents a literature study of the issues surrounding these complex and multi-tiered supply chain structures. It also presents a secondary analysis of the literature pertaining to supply chain risks in the food sector. Inter-firm aspects specifically in terms of relationships, trust and governance are analysed and a conceptual model for mitigating risk is derived
