    560-566This paper is a rapid survey of the multitude of events that covered the life and time of National Professor S K Mitra. It highlights the main activities of Prof. Mitra and his disciples for four decades since 1923. The survey has recorded significant events for the following four periods of time: 1923-39, 1939-45, 1945-49 and 1949-63. The step by step growth of research activities from a humble beginning in the small “Wireless Laboratory” of the University College of Science, Calcutta in 1923, to an internationally recognized centre for Advanced Studies in Radio Physics and Electronics in 1963, has been reported in this paper. The paper also emphasized as to how teamwork was strengthened through compilation of the various chapters of Prof. Mitra’s world-renowned treatise on Upper Atmosphere. The paper contains names of those disciples of Prof. Mitra who have earned international recognition in various fields of Radio Physics, Electronics and Space Science

Soc. 9, 259, (1964).Author Institution: Physics Division, IIT Research InstituteInfrared transmission spectra of ZnO single crystals have been investigated from 500 to 1600cm11600 cm^{-1}, and tentative assignment of the 25 observed absorption maxima to multiphonon processes leads to the following characteristic phonon frequencies (in cm1:LO=489,TO1=441,TO2=426,LA=243,TA1=137cm^{-1}: LO = 489, TO_{1} = 441, TO_{2} = 426, LA = 243, TA_{1} = 137) and TA2=101TA_{2} = 101, belonging to the Brillouin zone boundary. In wurtzite ZnO the degeneracy of the transverse modes breaks down as was also observed in CdS and ZnS.1ZnS.^{1} The assignments were consistent with temperature dependence and polarization of the observed bands. The characteristic phonon frequencies have been discussed in terms of crystal structure and effective ionic charge.2charge.^{2} The assignment is consistent with the established trends for the II-VI $compounds.^{3}

    Self-Organised Learning Environments (SOLEs) in an English School: an example of transformative pedagogy?

    Self-Organised Learning Environments (SOLEs) are models of learning in which students self-organise in groups and learn using a computer connected to the internet with minimal teacher support. The original ‘hole in the wall’ experiments in India are now applied to classrooms around the world. The idea of SOLEs is a social innovation that is inspiring educators (in schooling and also business contexts) everywhere, as demonstrated by Mitra’s award of the 2013 TED prize. However, when SOLEs are located in classrooms, a number of questions arise. Are SOLEs easily adapted for the classroom context? Is the impact on learning as transformative as suggested by the original ideas? This paper considers in detail the application over two years by one teacher, using SOLEs in a Year 4 classroom in an urban North East England primary school, in partnership with university researchers Dolan, Mitra and Leat. Issues of innovation and transformation are discussed, informed by the ideas of Bernstein, Engestrom, and Giroux. The SOLE concept, although flexible, has the potential to offer a divergent, radical transformative pedagogy. This sits somewhat uncomfortably alongside more convergent approaches which position the learner as subservient to the curriculum, with the task of merely mastering subject matter prescribed by the teacher. However, what is notable from this analysis is that transformative pedagogy seems to be positioned alongside, rather than in conflict with, the dominant educational framework
