Quasi giochi d’azzardo
Luminescence of Selective Optical Pumping of Excitons in GaSe
We measured selective luminescence and excitation spectra at 80 K over the energy range of the direct absorption features in the layer semiconductor GaSe. Fluorescence line-narrowing of the excitonic band and shift of the emission peak, with respect to the exciting energy, of n=1 and n=2 excitonic recombinations were observed. These effects are connected to excitons localized by the presence of stacking disorder of layers

Radiative Decay from Free and Bound Excitons in GaSe
Spontaneous excitonic luminescence in GaSe in investigated from 80 to 300 K and at weak laser excitation intensity. Radiative recombinations of direct and indirect free excitons are clearly observed. The analysis of the emission lines as a function of the temperature, of the excitation intensity, and of laser energy permits to attribute two lines of the intrinsic luminescence to the recombination of direct and indirect excitons bound to defect centers localized in the energy gap. On the basis of recent theories on exciton-impurity complexes, it is found that in the crystals the excitonic binding centers are deep neutral acceptors. From the dissociation energy of the bound excitons the ionization energy of the acceptor levels is estimated. Moreover, the measurements seem to indicate that thermal equilibrium between direct and indirect excitonic states is lacking below about 100 K
European Sourcebook of Crime and Criminal Justice Statistics 2014
How do the police deal with crime throughout Europe? What decisions are taken by the prosecution services? How many offenders are convicted and how are they sentenced? What proportion of offenders are male, and what proportion are female? How many minors and foreigners are dealt with by the criminal justice system? How many police officers and prosecutors are there in a given country? How many prisoners are held in European prisons? How many of them are in pre-trial detention? How widely are community sanctions and measures used? What kind of work do the probation agencies do? What can we learn from victimization surveys?
The fifth edition of the European Sourcebook of Crime and Criminal Justice Statistics contains data for 41 European countries, covering developments from 2007 to 2011. This is the most comprehensive collection of data available on crime and criminal justice in Europe.
The Sourcebook provides accurate and validated national data, but most of all helps in understanding how the European criminal justice systems work. The data are supplemented by extensive notes that explain differences in the definition of offences and of penal measures, as well as differences in recording practice. These notes help the reader to understand the possible limitations to the comparability of the data
Policing and the Problem of Trust
In a sociological perspective trust is considered an essential component of all social relationships. The importance of trust in interpersonal relationships has been recognised also by criminologists: scholars of community policing and crime prevention believe that raising levels of trust between residents and police is crucial for the success of current crime control and security strategies. But how do police increase people’s trust?
A document of the Danish Presidency of the Council of European Union (7521/03 ENFOPOL 19) on “Best practice concerning neighbourhood and community policing” shows that implementing strategies to enhance people’s trust in the police is a key task for Member States police and that the major strategy focuses on the physical proximity between police and community. Frequent foot, bicycle or motorised patrols make the public aware of a police presence and increase people’s trust and sense of security. But are we sure that more police visibility (police-citizens contacts and police presence) enhances people’s trust in the police?
In tribute to Prof. Savona, this article aims to answer this question by reconsidering the results of my Ph.D. thesis tutored by Ernesto. Thanks to him, I could use data from a survey on residents’ attitudes towards the police held by Transcrime in April 2002 in Trentino, a Northern Italian provinc
When Criminals Invest in Businesses: Are We Looking in the Right Direction? An Exploratory Analysis of Companies Controlled by Mafias
The chapter carries out an analysis of approximatively 2,000 firms confiscated from mafia organised crime in Italy. It studies the drivers behind the infiltration, the territories and sectors in which they were active. It eventually tests the correelation between the distribution of 'mafia firms' across territories and sectors, and a variety of contextual variables , including trade openness, levels of R&D activity and the presence of mafia members. Finally, it discusses future lines of research
