Can the relevance of a scientific paper be inferred from the number of received citations? A reflection based on papers appeared in the journal Psicologia Clinica dello Sviluppo
The relevance of psychological research has been often questioned. In particular in 1974 the scientific journal Giornale Italiano di Psicologia raised a debate on the basis of an influential intervention of Minguzzi. After fifty years the present intervention, taking advantage from the fact that in our days it is easy to know how many citations were received by a scientific study, examines whether the number of citations may be considered for estimating the relevance of a paper. In order to compare the number of citations with the opinions not only of researchers but also professionals, we considered the specific case of studies written in their language, i.e. Italian. In particular 15 studies, appeared in Psicologia Clinica dello Sviluppo, were compared for the numbers of received citations (derived both from Google Scholar and Scopus) and the mean relevance ratings given by 4 researchers and 4 practicioners. We found many correspondences, but also some specificities
The social ecology of bullying: how normative beliefs about aggression shape bully and bystander roles
Children’s involvement in bullying depends on a complex interplay of individual factors, relational experiences at home, school, and with peers, as well as the social and physical environment where they live and grow up. Shared norms, beliefs, and values across different levels of their ecology can also contribute to bullying dynamics. This chapter explores how pro-aggressive beliefs across different developmental levels within the social-ecological framework shape the specific roles children may assume in bullying incidents (i.e., assistants to the bully, reinforcers to the bully, defenders of the victim, and passive bystanders). Additionally, the chapter outlines how a school-based approach, addressing both individual student beliefs and group norms about aggression, might be highly effective in diminishing the social rewards for bullies and fostering positive behavior through bystander intervention. Collaborative efforts among educators, parents, and community members are strongly encouraged to create safe and supportive environments that promote healthy relationships
Values across adolescence: a four-year longitudinal study. The predictive role of community violence and parental acceptance-rejection
Adolescence is critical for values development since transitions in several domains occur during this period. Building upon Schwartz's circumplex model, this study investigated stability and change of values during adolescence and their environmental precursors (i.e., parental rejection and community violence exposure). A sample of 773 Italian high school students (342 males; M- age [Time 1] = 14.19, SD = 0.56) was assessed using self-report questionnaires across four waves. Rank-order stability coefficients were moderate for all values. Latent growth curve analyses revealed a significant linear increase in self-enhancement; all the other values displayed a quadratic shape in change over time, with a decline in the first part of the curve and a subsequent increase across time points. Overall, significant associations were found between environmental factors and the baseline levels of values. Value change over time was not significantly predicted by environmental factors except for openness to change, which was associated with paternal rejection. Specifically, high paternal rejection was linked with a faster decrease and a slower increase of openness to change over time. These findings highlight the importance of longitudinal studies when examining value change over time. Also, they suggest that environmental factors may play a significant role in shaping adolescent values
