Il contributo analizza il tema del danno biologico, sulla scorta delle proposte di modifica normativa, per individuare gli strumenti di cui il medico legale potrebbe dotarsi per una valutazione corretta del periodo di invalidità temporanea biologica

Code-aided blind detection of the transmission rate for multirate direct-sequence CDMA systems

    No full text
The problem of rate detection for a multirate direct sequence/code division multiple access (DS/CDMA) systems is considered in this paper. It is assumed that, in each data-frame, each user may transmit its data at one out of a set of available data-rates, depending, e.g., on the kind of data to be transmitted, on the desired quality-of-service, and on the channel state. Relying on the knowledge of the spreading codes of the user whose rate is to be detected, rate detection algorithms based on the application of the generalized likelihood ratio test are here proposed. Both the cases where either the rates of the interfering users have been already detected and are known to the receiver or these rates are not known to the receiver are separately considered. With regard to the performance assessment, the effectiveness of the proposed rate detection strategies is validated, for a single-path fading channel, through both computer simulations and, with regard to the case that the interfering users rates have already been acquired, through a Chernoff-bounding technique

Blind adaptive joint multiuser detection and equalization in dispersive differentially encoded CDMA channels

    No full text
The problem of blind adaptive joint multiuser detection and equalization in direct-sequence code division multiple access (DS/CDMA) systems operating over fading dispersive channels is considered. A blind and code-aided detection algorithm is proposed, i.e., the procedure requires knowledge of neither the interfering users' parameters (spreading codes, timing offsets, and propagation channels), nor the timing and channel impulse response of the user of interest but only of its spreading code. The proposed structure is a two-stage one: the first stage is aimed at suppressing the multiuser interference, whereas the second-stage performs channel estimation and data detection. Special attention is paid to theoretical issues concerning the design of the interference blocking stage and, in particular, to the development of general conditions to prevent signal cancellation under vanishingly small noise. A statistical analysis of the proposed system is also presented, showing that it incurs a very limited loss with respect to the nonblind minimum mean square error detector, outperforms other previously known blind systems, and is near-far resistant. A major advantage of the new structure is that it admits an adaptive implementation with quadratic (in the processing gain) computational complexity. This adaptive algorithm, which couples a recursive-least-squares estimation of the blocking matrix and subspace tracking techniques, achieves effective steady-state performance

Il medico "mago" e il suo pubblico: Galeno tra prognosi e divinazione

    No full text
The paper aims, at first, to provide a synoptical view on the practice of prognosis, and on its methodological status, according to Galen's works. Then the author, analyzing a selection of texts coming from the galenic corpus, tries to throw light on Galen's point of view about the relationship between prognosis and divination. Both these technai aim at forecasting the future but, according to Galen, only one of them -prognosis, of course- is able to provide accurate information about the patient's health, and a reliable prediction of the future outcome of a certain disease. That's why the physician has to be careful when he pronounces a prognosis, since ignorant people may confusse his predictions with those made by the diviners, which are commonly known with the Greek word manteiai: this could result in a loss of credibility by the physician. But, in some cases, says, Galen, pronouncing a sensational prognosis -though based on evidence obtained by the observation of the symptoms- could give to the physician the opportunity to impress the crowds and gain popularity and prestige
