Haikai Poetics : Buson, Kitô and the Interpretation of Renku Poetry

No full text
The dissertation is a study of the poetics of haikai in eighteenth-century Japan. It is more specifically concerned with the works of Yosa Buson and some of his followers. Rather than being a study of certain poems, it is an investigation of theories of aesthetics and composition, and of criticism. Most studies of haikai focus on the short haiku (or hokku) form, but the present study is more concerned with the core form of this poetry, the long chains of verses called "renku" or "haikai no renga". One important object of this study is to challenge some of the established views of haikai found in modern scholarship. For this purpose, many standpoints of haikai theory have been found useful, since they often approach questions of interpretation from new and unexpected angles. Theoretical stances that stress convention and traditionalism are criticized and the spirit of haikai is found to be more in concord with theories of cognitive poetics. The dissertation consists of three parts. The first is a study of general haikai theory. In this part are discussed theories of aesthetics, theories of creativity, and a few questions related to the interpretation of this kind of poetry. This discussion focuses on those questions that are central in Buson’s own writing on poetics and puts them into a broader context. The second part deals with practical theories of renku composing. An introductory chapter gives a historical background to many concepts used in Buson’s age, and this is followed by a full translation and critical study of a renku treatise written by his disciple Takai Kito. The last part is an investigation of modern criticism written on Buson’s renku. All existing full-length studies of these poems are discussed in comparison. The absence of a long critical tradition concerning Buson’s renku has, in many cases, prevented the formation of established interpretations, and this is ideal for a study of this kind.</p

Shiki(子規) and Wang-Wei(王維) Buson(蕪村) -As Foundation of Shiki(子規)'s “Shasei” Theory (Theory of Realistic Representation)-

No full text
publisherIt is generally said that in 1894 Shiki(子規) was informed of a theory of realistic representation in westem paintings by Fusetsu(不折1866-1943) and then introduced it into his literature. However, he himself says that he 'borrowed' the word "shasei" (realistic representation) from pain-tings and even his own works written before 1894 clearly shows a tendency of representing things objectively and indeed many of them can be explained by the word "shasei". Judging from this fact the author does not think that he got his "shasei" theory directly through a theory of realistic representation in western paintings. If so, from whom did he learn a theory of representing nature as she is? The author supposes that he learn it from the poems of a Chinese poet named Wang-Wei (王維701?-761). Wang-Wei(王維), who is well known as founder of the southern school of Chinese paintings, was a poet who loved nature and was prominent in representing nature objectively. Shiki (子規) not only learned Chinese poems from his early days but himself wrote poems in Chinese and by reading his poems the author can see that he was greatly influenced by Wang-Wei (王維). With such a foundation as this, he was told about a theory of realistic representation in Western paintings and by adopting this theory, he came to form his theory of literature. Shiki(子規) also Paid respect for Buson(蕪村 1716-1783). The reason is, the author thinks, that Shiki(子規), very deeply attracted by Buson(蕪村)'s realistic tendency which seems to have been affected by Wang-Wei(王維) whom Buson(蕪村) respected, found out Buson(蕪村) and came to respecet him.departmental bulletin pape

Fermi LAT View of a Sample of Flaring gamma-Ray AGNs

No full text
In the first 3.5 years of operations, Fermi detected several sources whose flaring activity brought them to exceed daily fluxes brighter than F(E > 100MeV) > 10(-6) ph cm(-2) s(-1). These episodes were promptly reported to the scientific community by the Fermi collaboration by means of astronomer telegrams (ATels). We focus our attention on the sample composed by these flaring sources, most of which are blazars, known to be extremely variable over the whole electromagnetic spectrum, from radio to gamma-ray energies. We study properties of the selected sample and compare them to general characteristics of the Fermi source catalogue

In bachelor thesis Perception of Nature in Basho, Buson and Isa`s Haiku Poetry the symbolic perception of nature which is shown in haiku since 17th century is studied. To better understand the research, first part of this work has been focused on the history of haiku and its construction. The most common forms of Japan`s religion has been studied because they have an influence on the haiku poetry writing culture. Some insights and history of biographies are given as well for the three haiku masters` and their visions of the world. Study examined Basho, Buson and Isa`s haiku poetry. The seasonal word in each haiku has been searched in order to analyze symbolic nature images under each seasons` precondition and Japanese cultural awareness. Key words: haiku, perception of the nature, symbolism, Japan

Analysis of Tree Falls Caused by Weather Events in Urban Areas: The Case Study of the City of Venice

Urban green areas, while providing numerous benefits, can also produce negative impacts, often referred to as “ecosystem disservices”. While fallen fruits, leaves, and branches may pose tripping hazards, falling trees present a more significant threat to the safety of citizens and buildings. A study was conducted to identify the factors that most influence tree falls, aiming to enhance monitoring and maintenance in high-risk areas and develop preventive felling plans. The analysis was carried out in the city of Venice (Italy) using data from 2019 to 2022. Key variables included daily rainfall and cumulative rainfall over the four days preceding tree falls, minimum temperature, average wind speed and direction, and maximum gust speed on the day of the event and two days prior, as well as detailed information on the affected trees from the municipal GreenSpaces application database (R3GIS). The distribution of fallen trees was assessed in relation to these parameters, and a spatial autocorrelation analysis was performed. The results revealed that tree falls were more frequent during the summer season, coinciding with more intense weather events, especially those characterized by gusts of strong wind (>15 m/s). Street trees and trees in groups, particularly those in parks and densely populated urban areas, were most affected. Tree falls during a single event often occurred in clusters within a radius of approximately 1.5 km. Species analysis indicated that maintaining a diverse mix of tree species could reduce the number of fallen trees, as different species exhibit varying levels of resistance to wind pressure and adaptability to urban conditions. Addressing these findings can help to create more sustainable and livable urban environments, maximizing the benefits of green spaces while mitigating their ecosystem disservices

FERMI LAT view of a sample of flaring gamma-ray AGN

No full text
Radio-loud AGNs, especially blazars, are sources known to be extremely variable over the whole electromagnetic spectrum, from radio to γ-ray energies. Up to now, the Large Area Telescope (LAT), the primary instrument on board the Fermi satellite, has detected more than 850 sources that could be associated with AGNs. Several of them underwent at least one flaring episode at γ-rays during the time spanned by the Fermi observations. We present and discuss a list of flaring AGNs detected during the first 3.5 years of Fermi operations with fluxes brighter than F(E > 100 MeV) > 10−6 ph cm −2 s −1, the threshold set by the LAT Collaboration for issuing an Astronomer Telegram. More, the general characteristics of the selected sample are investigated

Constraining the environment of neutrino-emitting regions in jets of FSRQs

No full text
Recently, the gamma-ray blazar TXS 0506+056 has been proposed as the source of neutrino events detected by IceCube in 2014-15 and 2017. This has further pushed the idea of blazar jets being among those cosmic sites where significant neutrino production may take place. We use a procedure based on source-internal electromagnetic cascading to constrain the environments of neutrino-producing sites in photomeson production models of jetted AGN. The role of external photon fields as the dominant target for particle-photon interactions including possible effects of the anisotropic nature of the interactions in the co-moving jet frame is discussed. We apply this procedure to the 2014-15 neutrino spectrum observed by IceCube from TXS 0506+056 to conduct a comprehensive study of these cascade spectra. By comparing these to the simultaneous multi-wavelength emission of this blazar constraints on the environment of the neutrino-emitting region are derived
