Odorous impact from composting plant: biofilter versus RTO
The problem of odor emissions from mechanical – biological treatment (MBT) plants, and mainly from composting plants, is becoming a relevant parameter for the implementation and management of these plants. The more frequently used systems for cleaning the process air before releasing it into the environment are based on biofilters, scrubbers and thermal oxidizers (RTO).
Only few countries, apart setting a concentration limit for the odor emissions from MBT, ask for the use of mathematical models to simulate the impact of those over a defined area. In Italy, a regulation at national level is absent, but there are indications in some regional standards and guidelines.
The aim of this paper is to determine and discuss the odor impact from a composting plant, using a mathematical model (Aermod). In the basic configuration taken into account, this plant is equipped with a biofilter for the process air treatment, as commonly adopted in the sector. Two design variations were studied in discuss enhanced design criteria for decreasing the odor impact.
Concerning biofiltration, two solutions were compared: biofilter at ground level and biofilter on the roof of the plant, treating the air flow from the receiving and biological oxidation phases; the maturation and storage of the finished product are located under an open shed.
In order to give additional information on the needs of the impact optimization, a third scenario was considered: an RTO system treating the air flow from all closed zones (reception, biological oxidation, maturation, final storage) whose air is assumed to be convoyed directly to the stack of RTO.
The obtained results led to the conclusion that the most common solution is the worst one in terms of impact on the territory. This is due to the fact that the dilution effects are strongly reduced by adopting a biofilter. Besides this, the maturation and storage phases of the final product under open shed were noted to have a crucial contribution to the total impact; their input is greater in percentage increasing the distance from the plant.
Taking into account the results of the quantification of the odor impact, plant configurations with closed maturation and closed storage areas should be promoted in the sector. However, a conservatory design approach should maximize the role of a stack diluting the gaseous emissions even if this solution is not common for composting plants. This stack could service an RTO burner
On whose account? A theoretical-political reading of The Rape of Lucrece under the light of Jacques Rancière
Considering that Shakespeare can be read from a philosophical perspective and recognizing the potential of literature to unravel concepts, break down academic barriers and broaden analytical horizons, this text proposes a reading of three fragments of William Shakespeare´s narrative poem The Rape of Lucrece.
In this article we reflect upon the works of Carole
Pateman, specifically The Sexual Contract
(2019) and The Disorder of Women (2018)
since we consider it is key in order to discuss
what are the basic principles on which political
theory stands: the patriarchal, heteronormative,
binary, racial, class and colonial bias has long
been ignored. We recover her insights on the
specificities of women's political situation in
contemporary democracies, starting from the
most specific to the more general aspects. We
particularly look at the differences between
patriarchal and conjugal power, the distinction
between the public and private spheres, the
debate between Pateman and the contractualists
and paternalist authors, and the arguments
referring to the link between Welfare State,
women and citizenship. We also include our
own perspectives in the conclusions, aiming at
a critical re-reading of the texts. The article is
sustained in a conceptual tracing strategy, as
well as a cross reading one and an incorporation
of contemporary readers of Pateman´s work.Fil: Fernández Bugna, María Candela. Universidad Nacional de Mar del PLata; Argentina.Fil: Montaño, Camila. Universidad Nacional de Mar del Plata; Argentina
What shall we use to fill the empty spaces? : Displacement in Frank Norris\u27s McTeague
Author\u27s abstract: McTeague, Frank Norris\u27s Naturalistc text written in 1899, depicts the corruption of a California couple due to influences outside of their control. In positioning Trina McTeague as a woman unable to identify with either of the two major feminine ideologies of the day, the Angel in the House and the New Woman, this paper examines her identity as conflicted because of this lack of autonomy. Her failure to identify herself leads to a mental break that is reflected in the domestic spaces she inhabits. The places she lives each become smaller and dirtier reflecting her diminished mental capacity. All the while, Trina works to fill her trunk, a substitute domestic space, with coins in an attempt to build value for herself the only way she knows how: monetarily. This paper analyzes the feminine ideologies at the turn of the twentieth century focusing on the concept of identity and how it links to the domestic space
Efficacy and Safety of Endovascular Fenestrated and Branched Grafts Versus Open Surgery in Thoracoabdominal Aortic Aneurysm Repair: An Updated Systematic Review, Meta-analysis, and Meta-regression
Objective: To provide an updated systematic review and meta-analysis with meta-regression of efficacy and safety of fenestrated/branched endovascular repair of thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms (TAAAs) compared with open repair. Background: Endovascular repair of TAAAs may be a promising alternative to open surgery by reducing invasiveness and expanding the eligible population, but evidence remains limited. Methods: We applied "Prepared Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis" guidelines to retrieve, quantitatively pool, and critically evaluate the efficacy and safety (including 30-day mortality, reintervention, spinal cord injury [SCI], and renal injury) of both approaches. Original studies were retrieved from PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library until April 20, 2022, excluding papers reporting <10 patients. Pooled proportions and means were determined using a random-effect model. Heterogeneity between studies was evaluated with I 2statistics. Results: Sixty-four studies met the predefined inclusion criteria. Endovascular cohort patients were older and had higher rates of comorbidities. Endovascular repair was associated with similar proportions of mortality (0.07, 95% confidence intervals [CI]: 0.06-0.08) compared with open repair (0.09, 95% CI: 0.08-0.12; P = 0.22), higher proportions of reintervention (0.19, 95% CI: 0.13-0.26 vs 0.06, 95% CI: 0.04-0.10; P < 0.01), similar proportions of transient SCI (0.07, 95% CI: 0.05-0.09 vs 0.06, 95% CI: 0.05-0.08; P = 0.28), lower proportions of permanent SCI (0.04, 95% CI: 0.03-0.05 vs 0.06, 95% CI: 0.05-0.07; P < 0.01), and renal injury (0.08, 95% CI: 0.06-0.10 vs 0.13, 95% CI: 0.09-0.17; P = 0.02). Results were affected by high heterogeneity and potential publication bias. Conclusions: Despite these limitations and the lack of randomized trials, this meta-analysis suggests that endovascular TAAA repair could be a safer alternative to the open approach
In-hospital cost-effectiveness analysis of open versus staged fenestrated/branched endovascular elective repair of thoracoabdominal aneurysms
Objective: To compare costs and effectiveness of elective open (OR) vs fenestrated/branched endovascular (ER) repair of thoracoabdominal aneurysms (TAAAs) in a high-volume center. Methods: This single-center retrospective observational study (PRO-ENDO TAAA Study, NCT05266781) was designed as part of a larger health technology assessment analysis. All electively treated TAAAs between 2013 and 2021 were analyzed and propensity-matched. End points were clinical success, major adverse events (MAEs), hospital direct costs, and freedom from all causes and aneurysm-related mortality and reinterventions. Risk factors and outcomes were homogeneously classified according to the Society of Vascular Surgery reporting standards. Cost-effectiveness value and incremental cost-effectiveness ratio were calculated, considering the absence of MAEs as a measure of effectiveness. Results: Propensity matching identified 102 pairs of patients out of 789 TAAAs. Mortality, MAE, permanent spinal cord ischemia rates, respiratory complications, cardiac complications, and renal injury were higher for OR (13% vs 5%, P = .048; 60% vs 17%, P < .001; 10% vs 3%, P = .045; 91% vs 18%, P < .001; 16% vs 6%, P = .024; 27% vs 6%, P < .001, respectively). Access complication rate (6% vs 27%; P < .001) was higher in the ER group. Intensive care unit stay was longer (P < .001) for OR, and ER patients were discharged home more frequently (3% vs 94%; P < .001). No differences in midterm end points were observed at 2 years. Despite ER reducing all the hospital cost items (−42% to −88%, P < .001), the higher expenses (P < .001) of the endovascular devices increased the overall cost of ER by 80%. Cost-effectiveness value for ER was favorable to OR (56,365 vs 64,903 €/patient) with an incremental cost-effectiveness ratio of 48,409 € per MAE saved. Conclusions: ER of TAAA reduces perioperative mortality and morbidity compared with OR, with no differences in reinterventions and survival rates at midterm follow-up. Despite the expenses for endovascular grafts, ER was found to be more cost-effective in preventing MAEs

Since the beginning of the eighties, different heterodox approaches postulate that desirable
structural change relies on reallocation of production towards knowledge-intensive activities. In
this context, Ocampo (2005) argues that the dynamics of productive structures are not only the
result of innovation and learning processes but also of the existence of complementarities,
linkages and networks between firms, productive activities and institutions. From this
perspective, the author presents a typology of processes of structural transformation, defining
as virtuous those sectors based on high levels of learning and complementarities. Based on this
theoretical definition, Porta (2006) characterizes the recent Argentine productive structure by
using a diagram that combines "learning" and "complementarities" in accordance to the main
transformations occurred in the economy since the nineties. This paper aims at ranking
Argentine industrial sectors according to the axis of structural transformation defined by
Ocampo (2005) and operated in qualitative terms by Porta (2006) using quantitative indicators,
and obtain upon this policy guidelines to move each activity into a desirable path of growth.
