The effectiveness of an educational intervention to improve knowledge and perceptions for reducing organophosphate pesticide exposure among Indonesian and South Australian migrant farmworkers

Improvements of knowledge and perceptions about organophosphate (OP) exposure may be of benefit for the reduction in OP exposure. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of an educational intervention to improve knowledge and perceptions for reducing OP exposure among Indonesian and South Australian (SA) migrant farmworkers. Methods: This was a quasi-experimental study. The educational intervention used a method of group communication for 30 Indonesian farmworkers and individual communication for seven SA migrant farmworkers. Knowledge and perceptions about OP exposure were measured pre-intervention and 3 months after the intervention. Results: Unadjusted intervention effects at follow-up showed statistically significantly improved scores of knowledge (both adverse effects of OPs and self-protection from OP exposure), perceived susceptibility, and perceived barriers among Indonesian farmworkers compared with SA migrant farmworkers. Furthermore, these four significant variables in the unadjusted model and the two other variables (perceived severity and perceived benefits) were statistically significant after being adjusted for the level of education and years working as a farmworker. In contrast, knowledge about adverse effects of OPs was the only variable that was statistically significantly improved among SA migrant farmworkers. The results of this study suggests educational interventions using a method of group communication could be more effective than using individual intervention. Conclusion: These improvements provide starting points to change health behavior of farmworkers, particularly to reduce OP exposure, both at the workplace and at home. ABSTRAK Pertanian adalah kegiatan pemanfaatan sumber daya hayati yang dilakukan manusia untuk menghasilkan bahan pangan, bahan baku industri, atau sumber energi, serta untuk mengelola lingkungan hidupnya. Tanaman karet adalah salah satu tanaman komoditas ekspor yang ada di Indonesia. Tanaman ini cukup menjanjikan bagi pendapatan Negara karena tanaman ini menjadi incaran para investor luar negeri. Tanaman ini merupakan bahan dasar untuk barang-barang keperluan masyarakat serpeti ban mobil, sepatu, ember dan barang-barang lainnya. Indonesia mempunyai potensi yang sangat besar untuk menjadi negara penghasil karet alam dunia. Masyarakat Desa Nyayum pada umumnya bekerja di sektor pertanian terutama sub sektor perkebunan karet yang merupakan pemilik sekaligus penyadap, tanaman karet merupakan tanaman yang sangat digemari di bidang sub sektor perkebunan lainnya hal ini disebabkan karena hasil tanaman karet adalah sumber penghasilan yang tetap sehingga masyarakat bisa menopang kebutuhan hidup keluarga.Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui profil petani karet, pendapatan petani karet dan kendala yang dihadapi oleh petani karet di Desa Nyayum Kecamatan Kuala Behe Kabupaten Landak. Jumlah sampel yang diambil adalah 100 responden semuanya adalah petani karet di Desa Nyayum. Teknik yang digunakan untuk mengumpulkan data menggunakan dokumentasi, wawamcara dan kuesioner.Penelitian ini menggunakan metode pendapatan alat analisis = π = TR – TC. Hasil dari penelitian adalah profil petani karet di Desa Nyayum Kecamatan Kuala Behe Kabupaten Landak umur yaitu yang paling rendah pada umur 25-30 sebanyak 18 responden, jenis kelamin petani karet menunjukan bahwa responden umumnya laki-laki. Tingkat pendidikan yang paling banyak adalah tidak sekolah. Tanggungan keluarga yang paling banyak adalah 1-2 orang tanggungan. Status lahan yang digarap seluruhnya oleh petani karet rata-rata milik sendiri. Pendapatan bersih petani karet per bulannya dengan pendapatan yang paling banyak responden kisaran pendapatannya dari Rp 830.000-1.328.000 pendapatan ini juga belum bisa membantu masyarakat dalam memenuhi kebutuhan ekonominya sehingga petani karet belum bisa dikatakan makmur. Kendala yang dihadapi masing-masing petani karet cenderung sama yaitu keterbatasan biaya, harga karet yang sering menurun, cuaca, dan pemasaran. A preliminary study of the distribution of phosphorus and silicon compounds in Tasik Kenyir, Hulu Terengganu, Malaysia
A preliminary study of phosphorus and silicon compounds in lake water was conducted at
the Tasik Kenyir, Terengganu, Malaysia. Monthly water samples were taken from August to October
2010. In general, higher concentrations of both nutrients were recorded at the western part of the lake.
The results also showed that the nutrient concentrations were lower compared with other selected
study areas. According to the National Water Quality Standards (NWQS) classification for Malaysia,
the concentrations of dissolved inorganic phosphorus and silicon were in Class I, indicating a natural
level which is suitable for the conservation of the natural environment, water supply without any
treatment, and fishery activities
Conserving endemic plant species in oceanic island s protected areas
Oceanic islands are known for their high levels of plant diversity, due to disjunct
geographical distribution that leads to speciation. The main factors contributing to
genetic speciation includes the creation of a barrier within a previously widely distributed taxon and the limited dispersal of seeds, which favours genetic differentiation and, thus, fosters rapid speciation. Plant survival and population fitness vary
according to environmental factors and to human interference. This chapter depicts
the importance of oceanic islands as biodiversity hotspots, discusses the threats to
which endemic plants on islands are exposed, namely climate change, invasive alien
species, urbanisation, touristic activities, fire, changes in agriculture practices and
collecting pressure. The best practices worldwide to protect endemic plant species
in protected areas are also addressed, namely the implementation of prevention and

A dissolved and particulate Zn in the Terengganu river estuary, Southern South China Sea (Malaysia)
The distribution and behaviour of dissolved and particulate Zn during estuarine mixing was determined in the Terengganu River and its estuary, which enters the southern South China Sea. Surface water samples were collected during a transect at the full range of salinities region, and filtered through acid-cleaned cellulose acetate 0.45 i.tm filters. Dissolved and particulate Zn was determined using preconcentration-complexation treatment of the filtrate and acid digestion of the filters, respectively. The results showed that the range of concentration of dissolved and particulate Zn was 36-387 (mean=137+94) lig/L and 3-652 (mean=79+129)1.1g/L, respectively. The concentrations of dissolved and particulate Zn were higher in the freshwater end-member suggesting a riverine input to the estuarine area. Both dissolved and particulate Zn behaved non-conservatively, with negative deviation from the theoretical conservative mixing line in the estuary, suggesting that the estuary acts as a sink for this metal with the removal process accounting for 69-99%

Untuk itu Direktorat Pennuseuman sebagai unsur pembina pemrnseuman di Indonesia melalui Proyek Pembinaan Permuseuman Jakarta berusaha menerbitkan buku-buku yang dipandang dapat memperluas wawasan para pengelola museum. khususnya yang terlibat langsung dengan tugas teknis di museum
