Simultaneous measurement of strain and temperature of structures using fiber optic sensor
No full textThis paper presents the simultaneous measurement of strain and temperature using Fiber Bragg grating/extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometric (FBG/EFPI) sensor. This hybrid sensor consists of a FBG element encapsulated in EFPI sensor. Temperature can be measured from FBG part and strain from EFPI. We have analytically derived the relationship of the sensor outputs to measurands (strain and temperature) and yielded the characteristic matrix of sensor. Therefore, it is not necessary to perform sensor calibration for each sensor. By the derived relationship, we could measure directly and simultaneously the strain and temperature using a single sensing element. The fiber optic sensor was surface-mounted on an aluminum alloy beam together with an electrical resistance strain gauge and a thermocouple. The wavelength-swept fiber laser (WSFL) was used as a light source to supply high signal power. The simultaneous measurement of thermal strain and temperature was performed in a thermal chamber. Experimental results of Fiber optic sensor show good agreements with those of conventional gauges such as strain gauge and thermocouple

No full textThe choice of conditioning regimen before allogeneic stem cell transplantation (SCT) in patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is important. We retrospectively compared outcomes of medium-dose VP-16/cyclophosphamide/total body irradiation (VP/CY/TBI) regimen and CY/TBI. Five hundred and twenty-nine patients (VP/CY/TBI: n = 35, CY/TBI: n = 494) who met all of the following criteria were compared: first time for SCT, aged 15-59 years; first or second complete remission at SCT; bone marrow or peripheral blood as stem cell source; and HLA phenotypically matched donor. Median age of the patients was 34 years, and patients who received VP/CY/TBI were younger (28 years vs. 34 years, P = 0.02). Cumulative incidences of relapse and non-relapse mortality (NRM) were higher for patients who received CY/TBI (P = 0.01 for relapse, P < 0.01 for NRM). After a median follow-up period of 36.9 months, 5-year overall survival (OS) rates were 82.2% in the VP/CY/TBI group and 55.2% in the CY/TBI group. OS, and disease-free survival (DFS) in the VP/CY/TBI group were shown to be significantly better by multivariate analysis [hazard ratio: 0.21 (95% confidence interval: 0.06-0.49) for DFS, hazard ratio: 0.25 (95% confidence interval: 0.08-0.59) for OS]. VP/CY/TBI was associated with a lower relapse rate and no increase in NRM, resulting in better survival than that in CY/TBI for adult ALL patients
A Recessive Lethal Gene, l-Cy, concealed in the Second Chromosome Balancer of Drosophila Melanogaster
No full textThe second chromosome balancer, SM 5[In(2(LR)SM 5)]Cy, has been used as a most useful tool to study the genetic variations in natural populations of Drosophila. melanogaster. The balancer suppresses recombination in almost whole region of the second chromosome since it has complicated inversions both in the right and left arms. It is lethal in the homozygous condition and it also has a dominant mutant, Cy, and several recessive mutations.Homozygous lethality has been explained by the presence of In(2 LR) or Cy itself. However, the cause of lethality is not necessarily clear. Recently, the author has found a recessive lethal gene in a natural population, which is allelic to these balancer chromosomes. In this short communication the author reports that the lethality of SM 5 chromosome in the homozygous condition is due to a recessive lethal gene, l-Cy (lethal Cy)

Fabrication method and thermal conductivity assessment of molybdenum-precipitated uranium dioxide pellets
No full textUO2 pellets containing molybdenum networks were fabricated when UO2 pellets mixed with 3 or 5 wt% MoO3 powder were sintered in the CO2/CO ratio of 19/1 and then annealed in an H, atmosphere. The thermal diffusivities of UO2 and Mo-precipitated UO2 pellets were measured in the range of 298-1673 K by a laser flash method and their thermal conductivities were calculated from the thermal diffusivity, the sample density and the published specific heat capacity data. The temperature dependency of the thermal conductivity up to 1673 K in UO2 and Mo-precipitated UO2 was found to be modeled well using the conductivity equation, K =(A + BT)(-1). The thermal conductivity of the Mo-precipitated UO2 was higher than that of the pure UO2. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved
