This chapter discusses the factors influencing the tourist choice of airport. The initial section introduces the concepts associated with leisure travel, life stage, tourism trip type, and aviation choices. The airport context is then summarised. Underpinning methodologies that can determine choice for air transport applications are reviewed, before discussion on a series of themes relating to air transport applications that have a focus on airport choice for tourists: the role of airport catchment areas, airport region strategic planning, and possible impacts of technology development.No Full Tex
Assessing evidence-based training in a collaborative virtual reality flight simulator
In recent times, there has been increased focus on the utilisation of virtual reality flight simulators in flight training, driven by their advantages compared to conventional methods. However, a paucity of empirical evidence has prevented their widespread introduction and regulatory approval. Existing research focuses on single-user simulators, leaving a gap in studies of collaborative training within virtual environments. Consequently, this paper investigates evidence-based simulator training within a collaborative virtual environment.
A mixed methods approach was adopted, where behaviours related to industry-standard competencies were observed in a virtual reality complex aircraft and thematic analysis applied to a post-experiment participant debrief. The findings showcase the feasibility of utilising a collaborative virtual environment for evidence-based training purposes in scenarios aligned to typical initial First Officer airline training programmes, which is a precursor to supplementing traditional professional pilot training techniques. In addition, the study found that the visual barriers imposed by head-mounted displays were overcome through the adoption of refined communication strategies, thus laying the groundwork for physically separated multi-crew pilot training.Full Tex
Governance and policy developments for sustainable aviation fuels
Aviation is a carbon-intensive industry and there are raising concerns about its contribution to climate change. Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAFs) play a significant role in the decarbonization efforts. The policy makers recognize SAF as one of the four pillars to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. The governance of sustainable aviation fuels is a primary concern of international bodies like the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), International Air Transport Association (IATA), and European Commission. There are a variety of supply-side (e.g., subsidies to SAF producers) and demand-side (e.g., SAF mandates) policy tools that can enhance SAF implementation. Environmental sustainability challenges to low-cost aeromobilities
Accompanying the underlying growth in low-cost aeromobilities has been increasing concerns surrounding the associated environmental externalities. Indeed, the aviation sector is a major contributor to climate change, driven primarily by the development of low-cost aeromobilities, and the proportion of carbon emissions attributed to aviation is set to increase. Low-cost carriers, as with other airline types, arguably have a long way to go to addressing environmental sustainability challenges. A range of mitigation measures are considered, including technological, market-based, operational, regulatory, and behavioral changes. Recent developments affecting low-cost aeromobilities, including carbon offsetting and flight shaming, are also explored. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. There are urgent calls for government and industry to develop better methods for C and D waste management. The creation and stimulation of a market for C and D waste PwRC have emerged as targeted interventions to divert waste from landfill sites and create a second life for waste material. Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. An Examination of Human Factors in Australian Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS)
Objective: This study aims to identify and examine prevalent human factors in the Australian Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS) industry. Background: There is little research into the human factors of HEMS operations. Weather, fuel planning, fatigue, and pressure are prominent human factors found in HEMS operations globally. Method: The research methodology involves primary data through a tailored human factors survey of HEMS staff in Australia, and secondary data from historical ATSB (Australian Transport Safety Bureau) accident reports involving HEMS operations. Results: Results from a survey, as well as secondary data, show that Australian HEMS is in line with global trends, regularly encounter issues related to weather, fatigue and feelings of pressure. Weather factors were the most encountered event by most Australian HEMS crews surveyed. The likelihood of an individual committing an error or violation was increased when they felt pressure to complete the task. The cause of the pressure was found to be unique to HEMS operations with the condition of the patient being the most common. However, the source of the pressure was equally attributed to self-imposed pressure and pressure imposed by others. Years of experience in HEMS operations is identified in reducing exposure to some of the investigated hazards and human factors. Conclusion: The weather situation, fatigue and feelings of pressure were the three main human factor issues in Australian HEMS.No Full Tex
