Letter from Ruth Wheaton Johnson
3 p.Letter correspondence between Ruth Wheaton Johnson to Mrs. Belden. The letter was written to clarify how the Gaynor Club of Kalamazoo College was founded and named. She describes how in the fall of 1907, Miss Bertha Hussey conceived the idea of a women's Glee Club. The club was named after a Mrs. Gaynor. Ruth Wheaton Johnson describes the first show put on by the club, where they performed, and the kinds of instruments they used, one of which was the kazoo. She describes that after her and Miss Bertha Hussey left Kalamazoo permanently a year after the club's founding, it was taken over by Mrs. Edith Forbes Hacking who was the director and general manager. In the letter she enclosed a program from the first Gaynor Club season to give to the college archives
