Papers on Quintilian and Ancient Declamation
Declamation - the practice of training young men to speak in public by setting them to compose and deliver speeches on fictional legal cases - was central to the Greek and Roman educational systems over many centuries and has been the subject of a recent explosion of scholarly interest. The work of Michael Winterbottom has been seminal in this regard, and the present volume brings together a broad selection of his scholarly articles and reviews published since 1964, creating an authoritative and accessible resource for this burgeoning field of study.
The assembled papers focus on two related topics: the rhetorician Quintilian and ancient declamation in practice. Quintilian, who taught rhetoric at Rome in the second half of the first century AD, was the author of the Institutio Oratoria, a key text for Roman educational practice, rhetoric, and literary criticism. Subjects explored in the present collection range widely over not only the establishment and interpretation of the text and its literary and historical context, but also Quintilian's views on inspiration, morality, philosophy, and declamation, of which he was a practitioner. While the volume also offers detailed examinations of the texts and interpretations of a wide range of Latin and Greek authors of declamations, such as Seneca the Elder, Sopatros, and Ennodius, there is a particular focus on two collections wrongly attributed to Quintilian, the so-called 'Minor' and 'Major Declamations'. A major re-assessment of the manuscript tradition of the latter collection is published here for the first time
Transitional Landscapes
This collection of essays reflects on the theme of “transition” in all of its nuances (from ecological to sustainable, describing the potential of fragile terri- tories). This is a current issue on the political agenda and in the international scientific community, which interprets transition as a condition that calls for re- designing / rethinking spaces and flows (human and non-human) for a new relational ecology between bodies and inhabited contexts.
Researchers, local administrators, architects, land- scape architects, photographers are asked to think about landscapes in transition and their repercus- sions on urban planning and on the local and global territory.
The contributions develop innovative reflections, especially in reference to the spaces of the urban fringe, abandoned and polluted areas, landscapes at natural and environmental risk. The transition in these spaces consists in the possibility of enhanc- ing their ecological and environmental potential, favoring a transformation that affects society, set- tlements, and economies, with improvement in the living environments and the recycling of entire por- tions of the landscape.
Hence, this book compares proposals and issues: the former, coming from the international perspectives of international projects; the latter, linked to local landscapes that must be preserved in the richness of their values in relation to history and biodiversity; landscapes that must be safeguarded if we are to im- prove the quality of life, designed as the producers of habitable space and beauty
Implicazione di p27 kip1 nell'esordio e nella progressione del carcinoma mammario luminale
p27kip1 is a cyclin-dependent kinase (CDK) inhibitor (CKI) and mainly acts as a negative regulator of cell proliferation. Through distinct domains, p27kip1 has also been involved in the control of other cellular processes, including migration, differentiation and cytoskeleton dynamics. p27kip1 protein is frequently inactivated in human cancer and its subcellular localization (cytoplasmic versus nuclear) can be prognostic in some tumors, such as breast, colon, prostate, lung, esophageal, and gastric cancers (Ananthanarayanan et al. 2011; Wen et al. 2012).
With the advent of next generation sequencing approaches, p27kip1 has been identified as one of the 18 most significantly mutated genes in luminal breast cancer (Stephens et al. 2012; Ellis et al. 2012; Belletti, Baldassarre et al. 2012). Furthermore, the analysis of copy number variation showed that a fraction of luminal breast cancer also displayed loss or gain of CDKN1B gene, encoding for p27kip1 (Viotto, Russo et al. 2021), reinforcing the idea that p27kip1 may be critical for luminal breast cancer onset and/or progresssion. Interestingly, many of the identified somatic mutations are located in the C-terminal domain, leading to protein loss or truncated protein formation.
Therefore, to elucidate the role of p27kip1 in luminal breast cancer, we first used a gene-editing approach in a luminal breast cancer cell line and investigated the effects induced by loss of p27kip1 and by expression of two different truncated mutants, K134fs and T171*, losing p27kip1 C-terminal domain.
Our results clearly showed that these mutants, failed to rescue most of the phenotypes induced by CDKN1B gene knock-out, indicating that the functions retained by this portion are critical for its role as an oncosuppressor, both in vitro (Viotto, Russo et al. 2021) and in vivo. Moreover, we observed that lack of p27kip1 or expression of its mutant forms increased the resistance to the treatment with Palbociclib, currently one of the most common therapeutic strategies for luminal breast cancer patients.
Finally, to evaluate whether p27kip1 could also represent a driver genetic lesion during the process of transformation, we have also shown the involvement of p27kip1 in the process of cell transformation and tumor initiation. Generating p27kip1 knock-out clones in normal human mammary luminal epithelial cell line, we have noticed its ability to significantly increase the proliferation cell rate of these normal cells. Interestingly, the only deficiency of p27kip1 seems to lead the cells toward a stem phenotype and also therapy resistance, highlight the important role of p27kip1 also in the early steps of mammary cancer formation

By choice or by force? The role of voters’ age in the increase of abstention
In Italy, voter abstention has been constantly increasing since 1979 (Russo, 2011), and the most recent Italian Parliamentary Elections (2008) saw the highest percentage of non-voters in Italian history (19.5%). Even if this might seem quite a low abstention rate in comparison with France (42.7% in 2012 – second round legislative), Spain (28% in 2011) or the UK (34.9% in 2010), it is quite high for Italy. From the beginning of the Italian Republican era (1946) until 1979, the abstention rate has remained at around 6-7%, and we can label this as inevitable abstention: there will always be a proportion of the voting population who cannot vote. A portion of voters, according to some the 20% of all who abstain (Mannehimer and Sani 2001), are prevent from voting by circumstances beyond one’s control (invalid, sick, very old people, people resident elsewhere etc). In fact, even in countries where voting is mandatory (i.e. Belgium) it is possible to observe a small proportion (under 10%) of abstainers. This no-vote rate is unavoidable, and we can assume that the main reason for not voting is not down to choice. Because of the increasing of abstention by choice (Raniolo 2002, Tuorto 2006, Tuorto e Colloca 2010) very little attention was given to the forced abstention. It might be the case that with the ageing of population these form of abstention is increasing as well.
In this paper we want to analyse the electoral abstention phenomenon in Italy taking into account the age structure of the Italian population. The aim of our proposal is trying to understand how the rapid ageing of the Italian population can contribute to explain the overall quota of abstention. In fact in Italy we can observe two complementary dynamics: in the last twenty years the young age classes are decreasing whilst the elderly classes (over 80 years) are increasingly composed by women. Moreover, there is a large variability among areas with regard to these demographical aspects. We will test the hypothesis that the abstention (which is here intended in a strict sense: only voters not going to the ballots, excluding the non-valid vote) tends to be higher as the population of a given areas is older. We will test this hypothesis for five Parliamentary elections (1992-2008) by using ecological data at the municipal level and by employing as explanatory variable the demographic structure (age and gender). The results will be validated by using the electoral records regarding the percentage of abstention by age and gender of three municipalities (one for each of the main geographical areas: North, Centre and South).
