Treatment of ipsilateral femoral neck and shaft fractures with the Russell-Taylor reconstructive nail
No full textTwenty-seven ipsilateral femoral neck and shaft fractures were treated with the Russell-Taylor reconstructive nail. Follow-up ranged from 6-48 months (average: 23.6 months). Femoral neck fractures healed within an average of 3.7 months and femoral shaft fractures healed within an average of 4.8 months. Complications included one case of avascular necrosis of the femoral head, a varus healing of one femoral neck fracture, and a rotational malalignment of the femoral shaft in another case. There were no cases of hardware failure. The Russell-Taylor reconstructive nail allows concomitant hip and shaft fractures to be fixed with a single implant

No full textOf 242 patients with injuries treated by locked intramedullary nailing of the femur, 52 (22 percent) were considered suitable for insertion of the reconstruction nail. The Russell-Taylor reconstruction nail was found to be useful in a greater variety of fractures than those for which it was originally designed. In addition to ipsilateral neck and shaft fractures, the Russell-Taylor reconstruction nail proved successful in high-energy comminuted subtrochanteric fractures, elderly subtrochanteric fractures and pathological lesions. In two cases, problems were encountered due to the relative straightness of the nail, but in the remaining patients there were no technical problems. In the 43 elderly patients and those with pathological lesions, seven complications occurred: a number which compares favourably with published reports for extramedullary devices. There were no cases of implant failure and in all patients the device supported the fracture to union or death

Surgical treatment of humerus shaft fracture with the Russell Taylor Nail : a prospective study
No full textDie vorliegende prospektive Studie untersucht 66 retrograde und 4 antegrade geschlossene Marknagelungen bei Humerusschaftfrakturen mit einem ab dem 22. Patienten modifizierten Russell-Taylor-Nagel in einem Untersuchungszeitraum von 5 Jahren (1995 bis 2000). Behandelt wurden 52 frische Verletzungen, davon 2 offene Frakturen, 17 pathologische Frakturen und eine verzögerte Knochenbruchheilung. Nach der AO-Klassifikation waren außer C2 und C3 Frakturen alle Frakturtypen vertreten. Das durchschnittliche Patientenalter betrug 54 Jahre. Als schwerwiegendste intraoperative Komplikation sahen wir in 4 Fällen (5,7%) eine iatrogene Humerusfraktur, die eine zusätzliche Plattenosteosynthese erforderte. 6 distale Fissuren bedurften keiner weiteren Therapie. Eine posttraumatische Osteitis trat in keinem Fall auf. Ein Verfahrenswechsel war nicht notwendig. Bei 88% der Patienten ergab sich nach einem Jahr ein Punktestand von gut oder sehr gut nach dem Score nach Kwasny, wo neben der klinischen und radiologischen Untersuchung auch subjektive Befunde und die Kosmetik miteinbezogen wurden. Zusammenfassend beurteilen wir den von retrograd eingebrachten Russell-Taylor-Nagel mit seiner von uns vorgenommenen Modifizierung als ein geeignetes Implantat zur Stabilisierung von Humerusschaftfrakturen. Wesentliche Komplikationen des Verfahrens können unter Beachtung bestimmter technischer Regeln vermieden werden.In this study we examined 66 retrograde and 4 antegarde closed treatments of humerus shaft fractures with the Russell-Taylor-Nail, modified starting with the 22nd patient. Time of observation lasted from 1995 to 2000. We treated 52 acute injuries, two of them open fractures, 17 pathological fractures and 1 delayed fracture healing. According to AO-classification all types of fractures were represented, except C2 and C3. Mean age of patients was 54 years. Worst intraoperative complication was iatrogenic humerus fracture observed in 4 cases (5, 7%) which required an additional osteosynthesis. 6 distal fissures didn’t require further therapy. No postoperative osteitis occurred and no change of treatment strategy was necessary. After one year follow up in 88% of the patients we found good or very well results according to the Score of Kwasny where also subjective results and the cosmetics were integrated besides the clinical and radiological findings. In conclusion we judge the Russell-Taylor nail with its modification as a suitable implant for the stabilization of humerus shaft fractures. Essential complications of the method can be avoided considering certain technical rules
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
