Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Analysis of inadequacies in hospital care through medical liability litigation
Over the past two decades, health litigation has followed an exponentially incremental trend. As insurance companies tend to limit their interest because of the high risk of loss, health facilities increasingly need to internalize dispute management. This study was conducted through a retrospective analysis of existing files concerning the civil litigation of the Sant’Andrea Hospital in Rome. All claims from 1 June 2010 to 30 June 2019 were included. Paid claims were further classified according to the areas of health care inappropriateness found. Authors indexed 567 different claims along the study period, with an average number of 59 per year (range 38–77). The total litigation involved 47 different units; more than 40% concerned 5 high-incidence wards or services. Concerning the course of disputes, 91 cases were liquidated before a judicial procedure was instituted, while 177 cases landed in a civil court. Globally, 131 different claims hesitated in compensation, for a total of 16 million 625 thousand euros, 41% of which was related to the internal medicine area. Dealing with the inappropriateness analysis, clinical performance alone involved 76 cases, for a total of 10 million 320 thousand euros, while organization defects involved 20 disputes equivalent to 1 million 788 thousand euros. According to innovations already introduced by Law 24/2017, with Decree Law no. 44 of 1 April 2021 and the subsequent conversion law no. 71 of 2021, Italy is the only country in which ad hoc rules have been introduced to limit the professional liability of healthcare professionals during the health emergency. Micrornas and sepsis-induced cardiac dysfunction: a systematic review
Sepsis is a severe condition characterized by systemic inflammation. One of the most involved organs in sepsis is the heart. On the other hand, heart failure and dysfunction are some of the most leading causes of death in septic patients. miRNAs are short single-strand non-coding ribonucleic acids involved in the regulation of gene expression on a post-transcriptional phase, which means they are a part of the epigenetic process. Recently, researchers have found that miRNA expression in tissues and blood differs depending on different conditions. Because of this property, their use as serum sepsis biomarkers has also been explored. A narrative review is carried out to gather and summarize what is known about miRNAs’ influence on cardiac dysfunction during sepsis. When reviewing the literature, we found at least 77 miRNAs involved in cardiac inflammation and dysfunction during sepsis. In the future, miRNAs may be used as early sepsis-induced cardiac dysfunction biomarkers or as new drug targets. This could help clinicians to early detect, prevent, and treat cardiac damage. The potential role of miRNAs as new diagnostic tools and therapeutic strategies worth deepening the complex network between non-coding RNA and biological pathways. Additional studies are needed to further investigate their role in sepsis-induced myocardium injury
Exploring ways to improve knee osteoarthritis care: The role of mobile apps in enhancing therapeutic exercise—a systematic review
Objective: Osteoarthritis (OA), particularly knee OA, is a leading cause of disability and poses significant challenges in healthcare management. Mobile applications (apps) have emerged as potential tools to support therapeutic exercise by providing tailored programs, instructional content, and progress tracking. This systematic review evaluates the efficacy of mobile apps in enhancing therapeutic exercise for knee OA management. Methods: A systematic review was conducted, analyzing randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to assess the impact of mobile apps on pain and knee function in patients with OA. The review followed the Cochrane Handbook guidelines and was registered with PROSPERO. Inclusion criteria focused on RCTs involving adults aged 40 and above with knee OA, and outcomes were measured based on pain intensity and knee function. Results: Five RCTs met the inclusion criteria. The results varied: while some studies demonstrated minor improvements in pain and function with app-based interventions, others showed comparable effectiveness to traditional methods. The review highlights the potential of mobile apps to offer benefits in managing knee OA, though outcomes were inconsistent due to intervention and population heterogeneity. Conclusion: Despite the low certainty of evidence, mobile app-based interventions appear to have a positive impact on reducing pain and improving physical function in patients with knee OA. Continued research is essential to better understand the effectiveness and long-term impact of mobile technology in OA management, underscoring the value of digital health interventions in enhancing patient care
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases.
