No full textIn the story Luo Dadou’s life (Luo Dadou de yisheng 罗大斗的一生), Lu Ling 路翎 (1923-1994) gives shape to the deepness of human psyche and stresses the suffering of the Self of his age by giving a brilliant emphasis to human individuality. The author succeeds in doing so by creating an amazing psychological characterization of the main character, both by means of words and by means of grammatical structures. By applying Denton’s categories for the study of the Self in modern Chinese literature, I analysed Lu Ling’s short story from the Freudian and Kleinian psychodynamic perspective, so to demonstrate how Lu Ling enters his characters’ minds and wonderfully recreates the psychological dynamics inside and between them

A Study on Luo Zhi Cheng\ue2s Historical narrative poems
No full textLuo Zhi Cheng is an important poet in the field of Taiwanese modern poetry, who is known for distinctive linguistic style and intense creative consciousness that are respected. Based on his powerful imagination and flourishing creativity as two primary advantages, through the mediation of poetry, prose, remarks, and commentaries, he maximally amplifies the implication of literature, and thereby composes himself and enriches the character. Distinguished from the majority of researchers focusing on Luo\ue2s lyric works, this study particularly found a writing context of \ue2avoidance of lyric sensibility\ue2 in Luo\ue2s poems, that is, his series of works historical themes in the form of long poems utilizing narrative skills to exhibit the remarkable consistency between the internality and the externality of the author.
\ue3\ue3This study conducted a comparative investigation of Luo\ue2s poetry work (The Book of Zhuzi) and prose works (Austral Court\ue2s Notandum and The Initiation of Civilization) to build a relatively more multi-faceted \ue2author\ue2s image of Luo Zhi Cheng\ue2 according to the writing of works of historical themes. Using the methodology of narratology, I departed from the internality of the text (the collection of poems) to identify how Luo forms the ideal spectrum of character by shaping historical persons; and meanwhile, I equally departed from the collections of prose to grasp the external information of the texts, and thereby clarified that Luo may treat \ue2writing, individual, and society\ue2 as a process of self-fulfillment. It is the two corresponding identities \ue2poet\ue2 and \ue2the intellectual\ue2 that are the mechanism of his constructing self-justification. Such investigation of the internality and the externality of text confirmed the complex relationships of the sustained \ue2opposition,\ue2 \ue2coexistence,\ue2 and \ue2conflict\ue2 between Luo and his works of historical themes
The role of three-dimensionality in the development of vortex breakdown in swirling flow
No full textDirect numerical simulations of three-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations are conducted using high-order numerical methods in cylindrical coordinates. Aim of the work is to examine the effect of three-dimensionality in the dynamics of vortex breakdown in swirling jets within a specific range of Reynolds numbers. The main elements of vortex breakdown are revealed in our computations, and the interaction between three-dimensional helical instabilities and the axisymmetric process of breakdown is discussed. The results confirm a general tendency of swirling flows to burst into a sequence of bubbles when the Reynolds number is increased. Comparing axisymmetric and fully three-dimensional computations, it's observed the possibility that a single or double helical structure arising in linear regime can work to extract energy from the axisymmetric waves
Reversible Li Intercalation in Layered Cathodes Enabled by Dopant-Induced Medium-Range Orders
No full textDoping could effectively tune the electrochemical performance of layered oxide cathodes in Li-ion batteries, whereas the working mechanism is usually oversimplified (i.e., a “pillar” effect). Although the Jahn-Teller effect is generally regarded as the fundamental origin of structural instability in some oxides, more polyhedral distortions are associated with pseudo-JTE (PJTE), which involves vibronic couplings. In this work, the atomic structures of doped LiCoO2 by Mg cations, F anions, and both were investigated thoroughly to reveal the atomic environments of these dopants and their influence on electrochemical performance. The function of these dopants as pillars is well discussed from the view of PJTE manipulation. Briefly, the MgO4 tetrahedra in Mg-doped LiCoO2 could suppress the charge transfer from the ligand to Co in neighboring octahedra, thus depressing PJTE. Although F doping does increase the ligand-field strength, the induced octahedral distortion reduces the structural stability dramatically. Comparatively, Mg/F co-doping generates the CoO5F-MgO4F2-CoO5F medium-range orders (MROs), which could depress both structural distortion and charge transfer in Co-centered octahedra for reduced PJTE. The reduced PJTE accounts for the improved electrochemical performance, making the co-doped LiCoO2 offer the best performance: a 70% capacity retention after 200 cycles within the potential range of 2.8-4.6 V, followed by Mg-doped LiCoO2. In contrast, although F-doping could induce an extra rock salt-like surface layer for higher capacity, its cycling improvement is rather limited. Jaber: Reflections on a Luo Aesthetic Expression
No full textAs a common expression, the Luo word jaber seems to be ordinary or even casual, yet it is a capsule of profound ideas within the context of Luo aesthetics. Jaber literally means “a person of beauty”: it is often used to describe females who have exceptional physical qualities that make them outstandingly attractive and deeply pleasurable to look at. The article advances the view that the term jaber offers us a key to understanding the aesthetics of the Luo of Kenya and of Western Nilotic-speakers in general. The author drew from personal experience, informal interviews, unpublished songs and existing literature as a basis for description and analysis of jaber. The picture that emerged suggested that visual beauty is only one layer of the meaning of jaber. Exploration of other layers and meanings in a broad context revealed that the expression points to aesthetic ideals, and can therefore be regarded as artistic. Dholuo speakers use the term to express appreciation of what they see, hear and feel; but it is also an intellectual tool used to offer a critique of concrete and non-concrete objects. Understanding “Slandering”: A Study of Luo Yin’s Writings of Slandering
No full textThesis (Master's)--University of Washington, 2020This thesis is an attempt to study a collection of fifty-eight short essays-Writings of Slandering-written and compiled by the late Tang scholar Luo Yin. The research questions are who are slandered, why are the targets slandered, and how. The answering of the questions will primarily rely on textual studies, accompanied by an exploration of the tradition of “slandering” in the literati’s world, as well as a look at Luo Yin’s career and experience as a persistent imperial exam taker. The project will advance accordingly: In the introduction, I will examine the concept of “slandering” in terms of how the Chinese literati associate themselves with it and the implications of slandering or being slandered. Also, I will try to explain how Luo Yin fits into the picture. Chapter two will focus on the studies of the historical background of the mid-to-late Tang period and the themes of the essays. Specifically, it will spell out the individuals, the group of people, and the political and social phenomenon slandered in the essays. Then, it will analyze the significance of the targets and Luo’s sentiments towards them. Chapter three will tackle the problem of “How did Luo slander?” from two perspectives. It will discuss the great variety of the prose genres Luo adopted in the fifty-eight essays, with special attention to his efforts to model the ancient-style literary genres and make innovative adaptations. Also, I will study the literary styles and metaphors that the author took to display his erudition and writing skills. Finally, the project will conclude with the answers to the research questions raised around “slandering” and shed light on the literary status and significance of the Writings of Slandering as well as Luo Yin
