Characterizing the Suitability of Granular Fe0 for the Water Treatment Industry
There is a burgeoning interest in reliably characterizing the intrinsic reactivity of metallic iron materials (Fe0) or zero-valent iron materials (ZVI) used in the water treatment industry. The present work is a contribution to a science-based selection of Fe0 for water treatment. A total of eight (8) granular ZVI materials (ZVI1 to ZVI8) were tested. Fe0 dissolution in ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA test) and 1,10-Phenanthroline (Phen test) is characterized in parallel experiments for up to 250 h (10 days). 50 mL of each solution and 0.1 g of each Fe0 material are equilibrated in quiescent batch experiments using 2 mM EDTA or Phen. Results indicated a far higher extent of iron dissolution in EDTA than in Phen under the experimental conditions. The tested materials could be grouped into three reactivity classes: (i) low (ZVI4, ZVI6, ZVI7, and ZVI8), (ii) moderate (ZVI1 and ZVI5) and (iii) high (ZVI2 and ZVI3). The order of reactivity was the same for both tests: ZVI2 ≅ ZVI3 > ZVI1 ≅ ZVI5 > ZVI4 ≅ ZVI6 ≅ ZVI7 ≅ ZVI8. Phen results revealed for the first time the time-dependent variation of the kinetics of iron corrosion (corrosion rate) in short-term batch experiments. Overall, the results demonstrated the superiority of the Phen test for evaluating the initial stage of Fe0 dissolution. Long-term column experiments are recommended to deepen the acquired knowledge

Doctor-family-patient relationship: The Chinese paradigm of informed consent
Bioethics is a subject far removed from the Chinese, even from many Chinese medical students and medical professionals. In-depth interviews with eighteen physicians, patients, and family members provided a deeper understanding of bioethical practices in contemporary China, especially with regard to the doctor-patient relationship (DPR) and informed consent. The Chinese model of doctor-family-patient relationship (DFPR), instead of DPR, is taken to reflect Chinese Confucian cultural commitments. An examination of the history of Chinese culture and the profession of medicine in China is used to disclose the deep roots of these commitments. Innovative Structure Solution for Discharge Sluice at Vung Tau Go Cong Viet Nam
The demand for large discharge sluices in Viet Nam is increasing as the constructions of small river barriers show their restrictions in flooding and salt intrusion protection. The main objective of this study is therefore to research an appropriate design for the sluice structure type that can be applied in Vung Tau Go Cong, which is the largest project of discharge sluice in Viet Nam so far. From the literature review, it can be seen that in the Netherlands, several units of sluice caisson have been applied but their main function was only to permanently close the basin, while in Viet Nam only a single caisson is applied as small river barriers. It is to say that a large discharge sluice with several units of caisson has never been built so far. In contrast with this type of structure, most of discharge sluices and barriers in the world have been build according to the “pier structure type”. In the Netherlands piers and bottom slabs are normally placed on batter pile foundations. Meanwhile in Viet Nam, piers are often placed on vertical pile foundations and a bottom slab is replaced by supporting beams. Because of both “proven structure”- caisson and pier have their own strong and weak points, by combining the best features of these “proven technologies” of the Netherlands and Viet Nam; two appropriate structure types were designed and the critical concerns related to them were checked. It is concluded that the caisson and pier sluice structure are feasible solutions for the discharge sluice at Vung Tau Go cong. Propagation and damping of Alfvén waves in low solar atmosphere
Propagation and damping of Alfvén waves in the inner solar corona are studied using a 2D magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) simulation code with realistic density and temperature profiles in a uniform background magnetic field. A linear wave is launched by ascribing a sinusoidal fluid motion at about 1000 km from the surface of the Sun, which is shown to generate Alfvénic wave motions along the height. The 2D MHD simulation shows that for B0 ≈ 3G, Alfvén waves of about 10-2 Hz with an infinite horizontal length-scale can penetrate into the corona, transferring about 90 per cent their energies. This raises the possibility that the wave can be dissipated by various physical processes. The results show that the propagating wave can effectively damp via viscosity in the lower region of the corona, if a horizontal scale of granular size is incorporated. © 2017 The Author

Kinetics and mechanisms of bacteriophage PR772 inactivation by monochloramine
With billions of people living with unsafe drinking water sources, ensuring safe drinking water remains a challenging task for environmental engineers and researchers. Human Adenovirus (HAdV) is a pathogen listed in the Contaminant Candidate List 4 of the United States Environmental Protection Agency. HAdV is highly resistant to monochloramine, a common drinking water disinfectant used in the United States and other countries around the world. PR772 is believed to relate evolutionarily to HAdV, which makes PR772 a potential surrogate virus for HAdV. Previous research characterized the monochloramine inactivation kinetics of both viruses, and found that the inactivation kinetics at high pH and high temperature was characterized by a phase of slower rate followed by faster rate, which was different from the more common fast-slow or tailing kinetics observed for other pH-temperature combinations, for both viruses as well as for other microorganisms. This thesis further characterized the kinetics of PR772 inactivation by monochloramine at high pH and high temperature, and proposed a two-reaction model to describe the data. Molecular analyses at various stages of the replication cycle were used to determine which viral replication step was hindered by monochloramine disinfection at pH 8.0-30.0℃ (baseline condition) and pH 10.5-30.0℃ (high pH and high temperature condition). The results showed that early mRNA synthesis, DNA production and late mRNA synthesis were all inhibited. Different from previous research on lower temperature and pH, partial genome damage and loss in viral attachment were observed.
