    Variations on the Author

    No full text
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Multilingualism constitutes an urgent objective for education, which needs to involve teachers and researchers at all levels if we are to promote effective and autonomous learning in the young. Like Daniela Zorzi, the author considers herself a socially engaged linguist, and in memory of her friend’s work, offers a reflection on the key roles of languages and cultures and of multilingualism for professional success and social welfare today

Agents and logics in community policing: the designing of performance measures

    No full text
Community policing (CP) is a proactive approach to policing that relies on the involvement of community members. In this paper, we address relevant managerial issues pertaining to CP by resorting to the performance measurement construct, exploring the logics at play in CP and how they affect the design of CP performance measures. A longitudinal case study was conducted in a local police department in Italy. Findings reveal three logics, the co-existence of which creates a unification and temporal stratification of CP performance measures, thereby delivering theoretical and practical contributions to CP and public-management realms

Urban regeneration of public housing in Southern Italy: application of an analysis and design methodology to an emblematic case-study

    No full text
This essay presents experimental research under way at the “Eduardo Vittoria Academic School of Architecture and Design”, University of Camerino, within the sphere of activities of the Italian Society of Architectural Technology (SITdA) . The research is focused on the development of a method for an effective approach to the regeneration of the industrialized residential housing districts built, in Italy, between the ’60s and ’80s and which now have become, after only a few years, a real urban emergency. Currently, they contain rapidly deteriorated, obsolete and often overcrowded homes, completely inadequate to the inhabitants’ needs, to the current legislation and to the now accepted performance standards. Within the controversy between "new construction" and "retrofitting the existing" as strategies for the modernisation of the city, the majority of debate has now concentrated on the destiny of these estates. In these areas, physical deterioration reaches exceptional levels, not only for the shoddy quality of their construction but also for the failure of the original planning choices, characterized by the quantitative application of urban standards, the indifference towards the quality of common outdoor spaces, the lack of flexibility levels in the dwelling units (to respond to changes in the needs of their inhabitants). The fruit of the research carried out to date is SET_up ( “SETTLEMENT_upgrade”), which is an analysis and design method devoted to the regeneration of this mass housing typology, applicable to different case studies in this housing field. The paper illustrates the method configuration, in its broad lines, and some results of the application of SET_up to an emblematic case-study of southern Italy: the PSER intervention in Naples in the ‘80s

    Melodramma e risorgimento

    No full text
The article explores how public administrations develop coproduced public services performance measurement, addressing a relevant turning point in the literature on public services coproduction. The authors adopt the singlecase study methodology, and the investigation is guided by key theoretical concepts for analysing performance measurement in public administrations. The empirical setting is a participatory security practice implemented by a Tuscan municipality. The security practice is an example of collective coproduction. Results from document analysis and interviews with key actors highlight how performance measurement is anchored to how the coproduction practice is experienced

Reclamações ambientais em Aveiro, Portugal: atores, preocupações, padrão territorial e resoluções

This paper presents an environmental diagnosis based on public complaints on environmental issues submitted to the Environmental Department of the Aveiro City Council, Portugal, between 2000 and 2005. It discusses the potential influences of these in local environmental planning and governance. The paper has been organised into five sections. The first of these introduces the study. The second section focuses on the conceptual approaches relating to environmental grassroots movements, the main actors involved in these movements and the role played by local government. It also contains a brief review of the most recent urban environmental quality challenges in the European context together with a description of the main features of the associated political and legal framework in Portugal. The third section describes the case study and the methodology used. The results of the empirical study are detailed in the fourth section. The final section critically analyses these results with emphases on the temporal evolution of the submission of complaints, the actors involved, the local environmental problems and their associated spatial pattern as well as the responses given by the City Council. This information may then be used to provide a useful indicator for the perception of environmental quality as well as a credible instrument for the visualisation and evaluation of local performance in terms of environmental planning and management.AlBan Programme - n. A Geostatistical Approach to Estimate Soil Moisture as a Function of Geophysical Data and Soil Attributes

    No full text
Successful implementation of site-specific irrigation requires an understanding of within-field-variability of soil parameters. These parameters can be estimated by direct sampling or by indirect surveying using geophysical data. The geophysical outputs are quite sensitive to soil water content; therefore, they can be used as covariates in soil water content (SWC) estimation. The objectives of this study were to use geophysical and soil data as auxiliary variables in the estimation of soil water content through geostatistical techniques. The surveys were carried out in a test site at the agricultural experimental farm located in south-eastern Italy in dry and wet soil conditions. The plot was surveyed with an EMI sensor and two different mono-static GPR systems, one with central frequencies of 600/1600 MHz and the other with a central frequency of 250 MHz. Forty-eight soil cores were collected for laboratory analysis of textural properties. One hundred and sixteen soil samples up to 0.30m-depth were collected to measure the SWC with gravimetric method. Kriging with external drift (KED), a non-stationary geostatistical technique, was used to estimate SWC with EMI, GPR and soil data as covariates. Cross-validation test was used to assess the goodness of the estimates and compare KED with ordinary kriging. The results showed that the approach using the auxiliary variables can be preferred to univariate kriging in terms of correlation between true and estimated values and capability of interpretation of spatial variability. Kriging with external drift proved to be a valid tool in sensor data fusion and could be effectively applied in Precision Irrigatio

hTERT Transduction Extends the Lifespan of Primary Pediatric Low-Grade Glioma Cells While Preserving the Biological Response to NGF

    No full text
The neurotrophin nerve growth factor (NGF) modulates the growth of human gliomas and is able to induce cell differentiation through the engagement of tropomyosin receptor kinase A (TrkA) receptor, although the role played in controlling glioma survival has proved controversial. Unfortunately, the slow growth rate of low-grade gliomas (LGG) has made it difficult to investigate NGF effects on these tumors in preclinical models. In fact, patient-derived low-grade human astrocytoma cells duplicate only a limited number of times in culture before undergoing senescence. Nevertheless, replicative senescence can be counteracted by overexpression of hTERT, the catalytic subunit of telomerase, which potentially increases the proliferative potential of human cells without inducing cancer-associated changes. We have extended, by hTERT transduction, the proliferative in vitro potential of a human LGG cell line derived from a pediatric pilocytic astrocytoma (PA) surgical sample. Remarkably, the hTERT-transduced LGG cells showed a behavior similar to that of the parental line in terms of biological responses to NGF treatment, including molecular events associated with induction of NGF-related differentiation. Therefore, transduction of LGG cells with hTERT can provide a valid approach to increase the in vitro life-span of patient-derived astrocytoma primary cultures, characterized by a finite proliferative potential
