Psychology of Reflexivity and reflexivity for psychology

    No full text
A long tradition has produced a misleading interpretation of the categories of idiographic and nomothetic. Such an interpretation has hindered the development of psychology and more in general of social science. “Idiographic” has been treated as a matter of identity, an ideological approach that continues to be reproduced through the conflict with what-is-outside-it viii S. Salvatore, G. Marsico, and R. Andrisano-Ruggieri (i.e., nomothetic mainstream psychology). Far from such a militant ritualization of the concept, YIS aims at promoting a return to the origin of what Windelband (1904/1998) proposed, namely the idea of idiographic and nomothetic as categories depicting two complementary—rather than alternative - forms of knowledge building

The Grotta Inferno complex in Cattolica Eraclea. The Grotta Inferno is located in the municipality of Cattolica Eraclea (Agrigento); it opens in the Messinian gypsum outcrops. The geo-archaeological investigations have allowed to clarify the geological formation processes and the use of the cave as a quarry of lapis specularis exploitation in Roman times. Recently in the area of the Roman Temple of the Valley of Temples in Agrigento, several fragments of lapis have been found in a dump of the 4th-5th century CE. This is the first evidence for the use of transparent gypsum crystals in an archaeological context in Sicily. Isotopic analyses carried out on crystal samples from the Inferno cave and from the throat of the Roman temple of Agrigento, have ruled out that the Sicilian crystals were used in the windows of Pompeii. The quality of the Sicilian crystals is clearly inferior compared to those from Spain and Turkey. It is therefore probable that the crystals exploited in the Inferno cave were exclusively used for the local market

Semiotics and Social Representation: A Figure-and-Ground Relationship of Mutual Cultivation

The link between semiotics and social representations theory (Duveen& Lloyd, 1999) provides the seeds for a theoretical framework that could explore social psychological phenomena with particular emphasis on the developmental dynamics of their changes. The consideration of the dynamic nature of the process of representation draws our attention to the situated nature of human experience in cultural and historical context, at the crossroads of personal and societal influences on human nature. The challenge this poses to social scientists is the development of a conceptual framework that can address both theoretical and empirical concerns that emanate from a focus on dynamicity. We believe that the study of semiotics may provide further methodological tools for understanding and studying social representations in the course of their production and evolution. This special issue aims at expanding the interconnection between semiotics and social representation theory by looking at three points of mutual cultivation. We propose three contributions in this special issue that articulate the issue of dynamicity as the meeting point between these two approaches. In particular, the reciprocal connection between the process of social representation and the process of personal presentation is examined in a contribution by Jaan Valsiner, with special regard to the empirical study of the development of social representations. In a second contribution, Alberto Rosa examines the methodological implications required in such an undertaking, with a focus on the interplay between the subjective and the intersubjective use of culturally situated sign-systems. Finally, Sergio Salvatore examines the semiotic nature of social representations in light of idiographic methods of researc

    Surgical treatment for spinal metastases.

    No full text
The treatment of spinal metastases aims to improve or maintain neurological status, achieve local control of the disease and maintain or restore spinal stability. Three types of surgery are possible: ▪ Palliative (the most frequent): consists of laminectomy and posterior stabilization. It is performed to treat complications from the metastases (pathological fractures and spinal cord compression), but it does not directly treat the bone lesion, leaving its treatment to other therapies (radio–chemo–hormone–immunotherapy). It is indicated in patients with a severe prognosis or with a good predictive response to radiotherapy (Figure 7.1) [1–4];▪ Adjuvant (frequent): consists of total or partial piecemeal removal of the lesion combined with other local therapies, such as radiation, embolization and thermal ablation. It is indicated in all patients who have a fair prognosis (Figure 7.2);▪ Radical (rare): consists of complete en bloc removal of the metastasis with a layer of healthy surrounding soft tissue to free patients from the disease, at least in that site. It is indicated in patients with good prognosis (Figure 7.3) [1–4]

In so doing, it has tried to reconsider the way this notion is understood. Idiographic science is not a science that negates the purpose of general knowledge, but pursues general knowledge through the particularity of events (Salvatore, 2014,2015; Salvatore & Valsiner, 2009, 2010, 2011; Valsiner & Salvatore, 2012; Valsiner, Salvatore, Gennaro, & Traves Simon, 2010). A long tradition has produced a misleading interpretation of the categories of idiographic and nomothetic. Such an interpretation has hindered the development of psychology and more in general of social science. “Idiographic” has been treated as a matter of identity, an ideological approach that continues to be reproduced through the conflict with what-is-outside-it (i.e., nomothetic mainstream psychology).
