Communication: X-ray coherent diffractive imaging by immersion in nanodroplets

Here, we demonstrate a de novo phase retrieval technique by encapsulating an object in a superfluid helium nanodroplet, which provides both a physical support and an approximate scattering phase for the iterative image reconstruction. The technique is robust, fast-converging, and yields the complex density of the immersed object. Images of xenon clusters embedded in superfluid helium droplets reveal transient configurations of quantum vortices in this fragile system. (C) 2015 Author(s). Three-Dimensional Reconstruction of the Giant Mimivirus Particle with an X-Ray Free-Electron Laser

Physical Review Letters, 114(9), 6. doi:10.1103/PhysRevLett.114.098102We present a proof-of-concept three-dimensional reconstruction of the giant mimivirus particle from experimentally measured diffraction patterns from an x-ray free-electron laser. Three-dimensional imaging requires the assembly of many two-dimensional patterns into an internally consistent Fourier volume. Since each particle is randomly oriented when exposed to the x-ray pulse, relative orientations have to be retrieved from the diffraction data alone. Multicommodity Multicast, Wireless and Fast
We study rumor spreading in graphs, specifically multicommodity multicast problem under the wireless model: given source-destination pairs in the graph, one needs to find the fastest schedule to transfer information from each source to the corresponding destination. Under the wireless model, nodes can transmit to any subset of their neighbors in synchronous time steps, as long as they either transmit or receive from at most one transmitter during the same time step. We improve approximation ratio for this problem from O~(n^(2/3)) to O~(n^((1/2) + epsilon)) on n-node graphs. We also design an algorithm that satisfies p given demand pairs in O(OPT + p) steps, where OPT is the length of an optimal schedule, by reducing it to the well-studied packet routing problem. In the case where underlying graph is an n-node tree, we improve the previously best-known approximation ratio of O((log n)/(log log n)) to 3. One consequence of our proof is a simple constructive rule for optimal broadcasting in a tree under a widely studied telephone model
A multiobjective evolutionary algorithm for car front end design
The aim of this study is to find the optimal structural geometry of the front crash member of a car of minimal mass that optimally satisfies all operational conditions. The mechanical domains that have been considered are crash, acoustic (dynamic) and static. They are
summed up by 9 objective functions, resulting in a 10-objective optimization
problem. However, this problem is further turned into minimizing the mass while maximizing the internal energy (crash objective), subject to constraints on the 8 objectives that arise from the acoustic and static domains. The dimension ofthe objective space of this constrained problem
is much lower than that ofthe original 10-objective problem. This significantly reduces convergence time, while decreasing decision making efforts among solutions obtained though pareto-based multiobjective
optimization.
Nevertheless, since the computation of the structural responses is based on a very time-consuming FEM crash analysis, direct computation of the fitness within an evolutionary algorithm is impossible. The response
of car front members is computed using an approximative evaluation
that had been identified during the BE96-3046 European project (CE)2: Computer Experiments for Concurrent Engineering.
Thanks to this approximation, very good results are obtained in a reasonable time using a Pareto elitist evolutionary algorithm based on NSGA-II
ideas, combined with an infeasibility objective approach for constraint handling
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Energy spectra of quantum turbulence: Large-scale simulation and modeling
In a 20483 simulation of quantum turbulence within the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, it is demonstrated that the large-scale motions have a classical Kolmogorov-1941 energy spectrum E(k)¿k-5/3, followed by an energy accumulation with E(k)¿ const at k about the reciprocal mean intervortex distance. This behavior was predicted by the L'vov-Nazarenko-Rudenko bottleneck model of gradual eddy-wave crossover [ L’vov, Nazarenko and Rudenko J. Low Temp. Phys. 153 140 (2008)], further developed in the paper
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
