Generación de chorros de agua mediante termocavitación en tubos capilares
No full textLa cavitación es un fenómeno que su estudiado fue motivado por el daño provocado en hélices de los barcos por la onda de choque generada por el colapso de las burbujas. Por tal motivo fue un fenómeno no deseado, que ahora se le han encontrado aplicaciones útiles. En el presente trabajo se estudia la cavitación para producir chorros de agua a alta velocidad para ser usados en aplicaciones médicas como es la inyección de medicamentos sin aguja.
La palabra cavitación derivada del latín “cavus” que significa hueco o vacío. Puede definirse como el estudio de la formación, crecimiento y colapso de una burbuja compuesta por gases o vapores en un fluido. En el momento del colapso de la burbuja, se produce una onda de choque con una presión muy grande. La onda de choque lleva una gran cantidad de energía mecánica que puede causar un daño enorme en superficies cercanas como por ejemplo en las propelas de los barcos o en tuberías donde circula líquido a gran velocidad. Gracias al efecto destructivo producido se comenzó a estudiar la cavitación

COVID-19 and Gestational Diabetes: The Role of Nutrition and Pharmacological Intervention in Preventing Adverse Outcomes
No full textPregnant women with GDM affected by COVID-19 seem to be at higher risk of adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes, especially those with overweight or obesity. Good glycemic control seems to be the most effective measure in reducing the risk of GDM and severe COVID-19. For such purposes, the Mediterranean diet, micronutrient supplementation, and physical activity are considered the first line of treatment. Failure to achieve glycemic control leads to the use of insulin, and this clinical scenario has been shown to be associated with an increased risk of adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes. In this review, we explore the current evidence pertaining to the pathogenesis of SARS-CoV-2 leading to the main complications caused by COVID-19 in patients with GDM. We also discuss the incidence of complications caused by COVID-19 in pregnant women with GDM according to their treatment
Robust weighted Gaussian processes
No full textThis paper presents robust weighted variants of batch and online standard Gaussian processes (GPs) to effectively reduce the negative impact of outliers in the corresponding GP models. This is done by introducing robust data weighers that rely on robust and quasi-robust weight functions that come from robust M-estimators. Our robust GPs are compared to various GP models on four datasets. It is shown that our batch and online robust weighted GPs are indeed robust to outliers, significantly outperforming the corresponding standard GPs and the recently proposed heteroscedastic GP method GPz. Our experiments also show that our methods are comparable to and sometimes better than a state-of-the-art robust GP that uses a Student-t likelihood
Assisting minority micro-entrepreneurship : evaluation of a proposed model for Brazilians in Massachusetts
No full textThesis (M.C.P.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Urban Studies and Planning, 2000.Includes bibliographical references (p. 104-107).Assessment of an economic development plan, based on entrepreneurship assistance, for a newcomer ethnic group in Massachusetts, U.S. Approached as a consulting project, recommendations for improvement are offered at the end. After a survey of current literature on entrepreneurship, a summary and analysis of factors relevant to self-employment motivation and success of immigrant ethnic minorities is presented. Data on the characteristics of Brazilians in Massachusetts is analyzed and related to the above findings, and the proposed plan by the Brazilian Business Network (BBN) is then critiqued. BBN was found to have many strengths, and the basis for its plan was sound, but the plan itself needed substantial development. The final recommendations include: further specific research on the target population to confirm this paper's preliminary findings, expansion of several underdeveloped aspects of BBN's plan, and the utilization of "ethnic business techniques" developed by older immigrant groups, and of recent methods devised by Brazilian newcomers and proven useful in defeating their multiple barriers to enter business.by Ruben Ramirez Morfin.M.C.P
