KRONOS: electronic audio game based on electronic music composition in educational applications
No full textThis dissertation researches upon the fields of Audio Games, Music Education and Digital Musical Instruments and combines them into an integrated electronic platform. The original electronic audio game Kronos, which aims at teaching concepts, principles and techniques of electroacoustic music, was developed to support that thesis. Following the structure of role-playing games, Kronos guides players to face challenges in order to create and evolve their in-game character. In the process of following the plot of the game they acquire knowledge, practice their musical skills and construct their music creation engine. The first part of the text builds the theoretical framework on three axes: games, education and performance. Regarding playing games, the inherent elements of game activity in general, as well as of electronic games in particular, are described and related to the use of sound. The genre of audio games is further analyzed by focusing on the sonification techniques that allow for audio interaction and accessibility. Then, a classification of audio interaction in terms of gameplay is suggested. Regarding learning through games, the educational potential of serious and audio games is examined, current design guidelines for the design of educational audio games are explained and an original methodology is suggested. Regarding performing through games, the concept of modern digital music instruments is elaborated, ways to use traditional and electronic games for music creation are classified and the role of a goal in the game process is discussed. The second part of the dissertation deals with the implementation of the work. The term of sonic symbolism is introduced as the key technique for processing the curriculum. Then, the mapping between sound and game plot, players’ expression, programming architecture, audio action and in-game mechanics, as well as the communication between player and game system are analyzed. It is concluded that audio games can become valid tools for education and research on musical and acoustic concepts, and address users equally as players, students and artists.Η διατριβή διερευνά τα πεδία των Ηχητικών Παιχνιδιών, της Μουσικής Εκπαίδευσης και των Ψηφιακών Μουσικών Οργάνων με στόχο το συνδυασμό τους σε μια ενιαία ηλεκτρονική παιγνιακή ηχητική πλατφόρμα. Ως απόδειξη αυτής της θέσης παρουσιάζεται το πρωτότυπο ηχητικό ηλεκτρονικό παιχνίδι Κρόνος, το οποίο στοχεύει στην εκμάθηση εννοιών, αρχών και τεχνικών της ηλεκτροακουστικής σύνθεσης. Κατά το πρότυπο των παιχνιδιών ρόλων ο παίκτης αντιμετωπίζει δοκιμασίες, ώστε να δημιουργήσει και να εξελίξει ένα παιγνιακό χαρακτήρα. Ακολουθώντας το παιχνίδι, επιμορφώνεται, εξασκεί μουσικές δεξιότητες και συναρμολογεί ένα σύστημα ηχητικής δημιουργίας και επεξεργασίας. Στο πρώτο μέρος της διατριβής ορίζεται το θεωρητικό πλαίσιο πάνω σε τρεις άξονες: τον παιγνιακό, τον εκπαιδευτικό και τον ερμηνευτικό. Στον παιγνιακό άξονα περιγράφονται τα χαρακτηριστικά της παιγνιακής δραστηριότητας με έμφαση στα ηλεκτρονικά παιχνιδία και αναφέρεται η χρήση του ήχου σε αυτά. Έπειτα, αναλύεται το είδος των ηχητικών ηλεκτρονικών παιχνιδιών, εστιάζοντας στις τεχνικές ηχητικής αναπαράστασης δεδομένων που επιτρέπουν την ηχητική αλληλεπίδραση και την προσβασιμότητα. Τέλος, προτείνεται μια κατηγοριοποίηση της ηχητικής αλληλεπίδρασης σύμφωνα με το ρόλο της στη διαμόρφωση του παιγνιακού τρόπου. Στον εκπαιδευτικό άξονα παρατίθενται οι διδακτικές δυνατότητες των σοβαρών και ηχητικών παιχνιδιών, αναφέρονται οι υφιστάμενες κατευθυντήριες γραμμές για την ανάπτυξη εκπαιδευτικών ηχητικών παιχνιδιών και προτείνεται μια μεθοδολογία για το σχεδιασμό τους. Στον ερμηνευτικό άξονα προσεγγίζεται αρχικά η έννοια του μουσικού οργάνου στην ηλεκτρονική εποχή, αναφέρονται υφιστάμενες κατευθύνσεις όσον αφορά στη χρήση παραδοσιακών και ηλεκτρονικών παιγνιακών συστημάτων στη μουσική σύνθεση και εκτέλεση και συσχετίζονται οι έννοιες του παιχνιδιού και του μουσικού οργάνου με βάση τον παιγνιακό στόχο. Στο δεύτερο μέρος της διατριβής αναλύεται η πρακτική υλοποίηση του έργου. Εισάγεται ο όρος του ηχητικού συμβολισμού ως βασική τεχνική για την ανάπτυξη της ηχοσήμανσης και επεξηγούνται οι ηχητικοί συμβολισμοί του σεναρίου, η ηχητική έκφραση του παίκτη, η προγραμματιστική αρχιτεκτονική των ηχητικών φορέων, η ηχητική δράση και μηχανική των παιχνιδιών και η ηχητική γλώσσα επικοινωνίας με το σύστημα. Συμπεραίνεται πως τα ηχητικά παιχνίδια μπορούν να αποτελέσουν έγκυρα εκπαιδευτικά και ερευνητικά περιβάλλοντα σχετικά με μουσικές και ακουστικές έννοιες και να απευθυνθούν στους ακροατές εξίσου ως παίκτες, μαθητές και δημιουργούς
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
