Development of novel pattern recognition methods and mathematical formulation for the determination of the method of construction of important archaeological finds and the identification of their creator
No full textThe present thesis treats two main problems in the fields of Pattern Recognition, Digital Image Processing and Archaeometry. The first part of the thesis deals with the problem of determining the method of drawing of a number of celebrated wall-paintings belonging to the Late Bronze Age (c. 1630 B.C.), excavated at Akrotiri, Thera, Greece. The solution of the first problem includes the following procedures. 1A)First stage possessing of the wall paintings digital images. Extraction of the contour of the main thematic entities. 1B) Fundamental definitions. The main hypothesis is stated: geometrical stencils were used for the drawing of the considered wall paintings. 1C)Selection of geometrical curves as potential prototypes of the employed stencils. 1D)First estimation of the probable one stoke parts of the contour. Curvature consideration and minimization of corresponding error functions. 1E)Introduction of a novel exhaustive curve fitting method. Optimal matching of two digital curves. 1F)Determination of the exact values of the stencils parameters. 1G)The hypothesis that stencils were used for the drawing of the considered wall paintings is supported substantially. Visual representation of the results. The second part deals with the automated identification of the writer of Ancient Greek inscriptions assisting the archaeologists and historians in dating the content of the inscriptions. It includes the following procedures: 2A)First stage possessing of the inscriptions digital images. 2B)Localization of critical turning points of the letter contours. Minimization of curvature based error functions. 2C)Optimal matching of the contours of the same letters via a novel exhaustive curve fitting method. 2D)Definitions of proper quantities describing the quality of matching. 2E)Novel statistical criteria testing the hypothesis that two inscriptions have been cut by the same hand or not. Computation of the likelihood that two inscriptions are curved by the same cutter. 2F)Geometric characteristics of a letter realizations contour. Statistical identification criteria based on these characteristics. 2G)Implementation on 32 Ancient Greek inscriptions, which have been selected by the prominent epigraphist-archaeologist professor Steven Tracy. Evaluation of the results of the method by prominent epigraphists for all 32 inscriptions. Nine articles, associated with the results and methods presented in the thesis, appear in International Scientific Journals.Η παρούσα διατριβή αφορά σε δύο θέματα: Το πρώτο περιλαμβάνει μία προσπάθεια εντοπισμού του τρόπου κατασκευής των φημισμένων τοιχογραφιών της Ύστερης Εποχής του Χαλκού oι οποίες έχουν ανασκαφεί στο Ακρωτήρι Θήρας. Το δεύτερο θέμα αφορά στην αυτόματη ταυτοποίηση γραφέων αρχαίων επιγραφών με σκοπό την ορθή χρονολόγηση αυτών, η οποία είναι πολύ μεγάλης σημασίας για την Αρχαιολογία και την ορθή καταγραφή της Ιστορίας. Και τα δύο αυτά θέματα αντιμετωπίζονται για πρώτη φορά σε αυτήν την εργασία, αλλά και από την ερευνητική μας ομάδα. Το πρώτο θέμα περιλαμβάνει τα εξής επιμέρους στάδια: 1Α) Επεξεργασία εικόνων των προς μελέτη τοιχογραφιών. Εξαγωγή του περιγράμματος των απεικονιζομένων θεματικών ενοτήτων. 1Β) Διατύπωση ορισμών και βασικής υπόθεσης περί χρήσεως γεωμετρικών καμπυλογράφων στη σχεδίαση τοιχογραφιών. 1Γ) Επιλογή πιθανών γεωμετρικών προτύπων καμπυλογράφων με κριτήρια αρχαιολογικής-ιστορικής φύσεως. 1Δ) Πρώτη εκτίμηση των πιθανών μονοκονδυλιών. Καμπυλότητα και ελαχιστοποίηση επιλεγμένων συναρτήσεων λάθους. 1Ε) Παρουσίαση πρωτότυπης εξαντλητικής μεθόδου προσαρμογής καμπυλών. Βέλτιστη σχετική θέση αυτών. 1ΣΤ) Προσδιορισμός των ακριβών παραμέτρων των καμπυλογράφων. 1Ζ) Υποστήρηξη υπόθεσης περί χρήσεως καμπυλογράφων. Έμμεση αναπαραγωγή του τρόπου σχεδίασης των περιγραμμάτων. Προσδιορισμός ορίων των πιθανών μονοκονδυλιών πάνω στις τοιχογραφίες. Οπτική απόδοση αποτελεσμάτων. Το δεύτερο θέμα περιλαμβάνει τα εξής στάδια: 2Α)Επεξεργασία των εικόνων των επιγραφών. Εξαγωγή του περιγράμματος των υλοποιήσεων των συμβόλων της αλφαβήτου στις επιγραφές. 2Β)Καθορισμός κρισίμων σημείων καμπής των συμβολογραμμάτων. Ελαχιστοποίηση συναρτήσεων λάθους με χρήση καμπυλότητας. 2Γ) Βέλτιστη προσαρμογή των υλοποιήσεων των γραμμάτων. 2Δ)Ορισμός ποσοτήτων που περιγράφουν την ποιότητα προσαρμογής. 2Ε)Διατύπωση πρωτότυπων στατιστικών κριτηρίων. Υπολογισμός πιθανοφάνειας. Έλεγχος υποθέσεων. 2ΣΤ)Μέθοδος ταυτοποίησης γραφέα γεωμετρικών χαρακτηριστικών. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
