Essays on American Options
Get PDFThis thesis deals with the pricing of American equity options exposed to correlated interest rate
and equity risks.
The first article, American options on high dividend securities: a numerical investigation by F.
Rotondi, investigates the Monte Carlo-based algorithm proposed by Longstaff and Schwartz (2001)
to price American options. I show how this algorithm might deliver biased results when valuing
American options that start out of the money, especially if the dividend yield of the underlying is
high. I propose two workarounds to correct for this bias and I numerically show their strength.
The second article, American options and stochastic interest rates by A. Battauz and F. Rotondi
introduces a novel lattice-based approach to evaluate American option within the Vasicek model,
namely a market model with mean-reverting stochastic interest rates. Interestingly, interest rates
are not assumed to be necessarily positive and non standard optimal exercise policy of American
call and put options arise when interest rates are just mildly negative. The third article, Barrier
options under correlated equity and interest rate risks by F. Rotondi deals with derivatives with
barrier features within a market model with both equity and interest rate risk. Exploiting latticebased
algorithm, I price European and American knock-in and knock-out contracts with both a
discrete and a continuous monitoring. Then, I calibrate the model to current European data and
I document how models that assume either a constant interest rate, or strictly positive stochastic
interest rates or uncorrelated interest rates deliver sizeable pricing errors

L’idea di sviluppo in Siro Lombardini
Get PDFCondurre una riflessione sull’idea di sviluppo in Lombardini consente di mettere in luce la “prospettiva” - menzionata nel titolo del Convegno - che caratterizza le sue analisi. Ancorché con significativi risvolti di economia applicata è soprattutto un tema rilevante per analizzare il metodo di lavoro di Lombardini, aspetto al quale si porrà attenzione in questo contributo.
Tra i punti di riferimento possibili nella bibliografia di Lombardini si è scelto di individuare un termine iniziale in Fondamenti e problemi dell’economia del benessere del 1954 e un termine finale in Growth and Economic Development del 1996. La scelta di partire da Fondamenti e problemi dell’economia del benessere dipende dal fatto che l’economia del benessere è, all’inizio degli anni Cinquanta, uno dei punti di maggior possibile contatto tra la teoria economica e l’economia dello sviluppo. Essendo l’altro punto di contatto rilevante le teorie della crescita. Lombardini come è noto percorre abilmente entrambe queste linee di analisi. Per questo si guarderà al percorso di riflessione sullo sviluppo di Lombardini passante dall’economia del benessere, alle teorie della crescita, alla programmazione fino alla riflessione sull’esistenza o meno di un possibile unico modello di riferimentoReflecting on Lombardini's idea of development allows us to highlight the broad “vision” that always characterises his analyses. Among the possible points of reference in Lombardini's bibliography, we have chosen to identify an initial term in Fondamenti e problemi dell'economia del benessere (1954) and a final term in Growth and Economic Development (1996). The choice to start from his 1954 work, depends on the fact that welfare economics is, at the beginning of the 1950s, one of the best possible points of contact between economic theory and development economics. As the other relevant link was growth theory. Lombardini, as is well known, skilfully treads both these lines of analysis. For this reason, the paper looks at Lombardini's reflections on development, starting from welfare economics, shifting from growth theories to planning policies and finally leading to the reflection on the existence or not of a single possible reference model for the development of specific institutional contexts

Get PDFThe chapter is about some projects developed by students during the Public Space Design Studio 2021/2022, led by professor Federica Dal Falco with PhD student Carmen Rotondi (Design Bachelor Degree course, Sapienza University of Rome). The text introduces the following projects in their materiality and shows how transferring design approaches to materials in public space design can be a proper didactic and innovation strategy that stimulates holistic thinking and applications of meaning. In fact, in the process of materializing a space's project, referring both to the surfaces (horizontal and vertical) and to the objects that populate an area, students are involved in an iterative exercise of analysis and synthesis aimed at capturing the different aspects of a context, to identify the relationships and to concretize a symbiotic composition. Therefore, the choice of materials with which to shape the project generates catalysis in the innovation process through the re-evaluation and enhancement of mutualism between the space and the broader context in which it is inserted: from the urban fabric to the nature of the place, to its history and communities; from local challenges to the broader concepts of sustainability, inclusion and accessibility; from the symbolic and semantic aspects to the languages you want to communicate and the experiences you want to generate
